Title: Is the RFID key really only $26?
Post by: Elfmaze on March 13, 2013, 09:39:21 AM
I was trying to think of ways to secure my ECU a bit against key loss. And $260 for a new fob is not going to happen.

The dealer doesn't seem to think so,  But looking at RonAyers Part number kawi# 21175-0256 Sku : 1273388

Spare Fob key $26.44

Will this work to program to my bike and leave in the safe?  The dealer seemed to think I needed the $260 key.   I will use the spare fobs the rest of the bikes life to save $240 per key.

Yes, that's the part you need and it will work. The fob isn't programed to 'see' your bike, the bike is programed to 'see' the fob. You'll have to get your bike programed by your dealer using their equipment.

Don't let your dealer tell you that it can't be done either.

I think that price is about right.  It still has to be programmed to the bike, of course.

This may be for the key that is stored in the fob. They come seperately.

That is what the dealer thought too.  But I didn't see any number for just the RFID fob?

The part in question is the *passive* fob, not the active fob.  I wouldn't want to have to use that everyday if the main *active* fob were lost, because it would be a pain in the ass.   Meaning, if you lost your main active fob, you are still going to have to cough up hundreds, unless you are OK with messing with the passive fob every time you want to start the bike.  That is not for me.

But locked in a safe (or drawer) it would be great insurance against something far worse- losing ALL your fobs (both active and passive), because then you have to replace the entire ECU, and that is a LOT more expensive than fobs/keys...
