Title: My TechSpec epiphany
Post by: Gumby on March 07, 2013, 08:58:10 AM
When I look at the spot where my knees rub in the picture below it always bums me out. I think this would be a great spot for another TechSpec grip. What do you guys think?

If there is enough interest we could possibly get another group buy going.

Short legs? My knees rub the tank.  ;)

Who you callin short?  ;D

My Buell pegs probably make some difference over stock pegs.

How the heck do you get your knees down there?  :o  Do you have the Buells mounted in the passenger peg position or what?

Post by: Gumby on March 07, 2013, 09:11:35 AM
Now that you guys point that out I don't think it is from my knees. I think it is from kicking back with the highway pegs.  :-\

I'm just saying I don't like the rub marks and covering it up with a TechSpec grip sounds like a good option.

That might be a good location for the Tankslapper film.

Tankslapper does make a piece for that, and I have this whole set. I was waiting for it to warm up before I tried to put anymore of it on. I like the looks of the TechSpec grips. Plus it is already scuffed up, if I put the Tankslapper piece over that area it is only going to look worse.

I have the same wear mark, but its not my knees as far as I know. Might be the side of my riding pants though. I'm in.

Ya I agree, I think it's just from riding pants.

I'd be interested if they looked good, I do like the TechSpec product, quality stuff IMO!

Gumby,

I bout the same kit from tankslapper and installed it within the first month of ownership. The tank sides do cover the area indicated nicely, however after about 3 years of service,  the material became brittle and started to tear.

So i tossed it all and installed the Teckspec stuff this past weekend. Im also liking the Teckspec idea for the lower tank area as well.

have you had a chance to do the headlight covering yet??? It was such a pain for me, I tossed it after the third go around.

Ya, I did one headlight and it was a pain. I did a few other areas, top of tank, fender, and a couple other small pieces. The only pieces I am happy with are the front of the saddle bags, which I took in the house and let them sit for a few days to warm up. I will probably try to put the rest of the stuff on this Spring and let it ride for a season, but I don't think the Tankslapper pieces were the wisest money spent on the Connie.  :(

I did just that a couple of years ago.  I don't recommend it.  Cutting it yourself does not get the factory bevel and for some reason, in the heat, slides just a tad to show the underlying glue.  I've peeled off one and will probably peel the rest off this spring when it warms up.  Just wasn't happy with it.  It does the job, of course, but the aesthetics aren't the best.  If you can get ones designed for that piece then go that route.  The ones I have one designed and beveled have still held up.

I just spoke with TechSpec and they are going to work on getting this piece into their line-up, hopefully by the end of May. He custom cut my pieces, and if he did that for everybody it would cost more.

I will work out group buy specifics once they have all their stuff ready to go. I think there are only about a dozen or so people that have showed interest. The more people that are going to fork out the cash the cheaper it will be. Just sayin'  ;D

Maybe it is the camera angle then, but it looks like you have a tiny, tiny (but cute) house :)  Your nice stand-alone garage is almost as big!

Nope it is my little abode, and the house and garage are about the same size. House was built in 1920, I had to redo a few things.  :)

So you in for some more TechSpec pieces Max?

I've already bought their snake skin pack.  But I want those side pieces!!!  I find that that snake skin is a little thick.  My tank piece is falling off now.  They seem happy to replace it.  I want to use the slightly thinner one, the C3 or even the High Fusion.  I may also try to re-design it, as I find that i lean more on my tank sometimes (damn buttons and zippers).  There are a lot of complicated angles in the tank that are a little problematic.  The side pads (Snake Skin) are fantastic!!!

I am in on any group buy for those side pads!

Well, I don't have any such thing on my bike.  I view it like plastic on furniture or runners on carpet...  Besides, I have never had any issue with rub spots or scratches on any of my bikes.  Maybe because I am OCD careful :)

I agree with ZG- at first I thought there was a slight fisheye distortion (actually called "barrel distortion") in the photos.  I used to have one of those lenses, many years ago.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisheye_lens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisheye_lens)

These pads are not just for protection Max. I use them all the time for added grip on the tank using my knees. Plus, I think that the bike looks better with them.

I'd be in on a group buy, depending on the price of course.

:goodpost:

That is the same reason I put diamond plate rocker panels on my truck. They are useful and they look good. When the time comes that they do not look good anymore I will take them off and the paint is unscathed.

I looked at the samples of each style (they send me three little 2"x2" samples in the mail) and will tell you what I worried about.
1. the C3 was just WAY too soft and spongy of a material. I couldn't see how it would hold up to much use.
2. the High Fusion was very thin and seemed a little slick. It would have prevented scratches, but provided little or no "grip".
3. the Snake Skin was just about right in my mind, and was proved to me once I had installed some.
