Title: Interesting camera mount for fuel tank
Post by: jamiemac on March 05, 2013, 06:46:13 AM
Has anyone used one of these MotorSportsMachine camera/GPS mounts on a Connie? They are made for a ZX14, but on a Connie, I'm wondering if the glovebox would be an issue. The rubber mounting of the fuel tank would probably be the best way to isolate a ContourRoam from vibration, but I don't see much out there for the Connie.

That looks to be a nice piece.
If the hinge near the tank is actually a hinge it should work with a glovebox in front of it.
I like the fact that once you set it up it should produce a replicable mounting position from day to day. It also stays on the centerline of the bike instead of looking to the outside of curves like the handlebar mounted ones.
Get one and fill us in on your thoughts.

Still thinking it over. So far the supplier has failed to respond to a message through both ebay, and their website, so it appears that customer service isn't a priority with them.

You could always use a spacer.

I don't know how long that arm is, but I doubt that it is going to see over the C14 windshield. Even if it did, it would be right in your field of vision. In my experience thus far, trying to shoot video thru the windshield has provided lesser quality results than I am willing to accept. You may not realize it, but at speed, your windshield vibrates or shutters with the wind rushing against. The camera picks this up and distorts the video.

I wouldn't be concerned about seeing over the windshield, because seeing the dashboard and gauges is part of the idea. I'm going to try using the Ram Mount on My left handlebar first, if that shakes too much, then I might just velcro the camera to MY clutch master cyl.

I'll consider the tank mounting solution, if none of those pan out. First I need some less than absurdly crappy weather.

It does look like it's low for a C-14.

How low can it go?

That's the thing, the sellers finally responded, but have never tried it on a Concours before. I hesitate to buy something for 60 bux, that,"could" work, but might not. No way of knowing how low it would go, or how high. It's made for a ZX14, and they don't have a glove box in front of the tank.

After looking at pics of the mount and shots I have of My bike, I'm pretty sure this mount will not work on an 08 or 09. I do believe it can be used on a 10 or later though, at least with a spacer as was mentioned above.

- these things work with sportsbikes (where the tank is taller than the instruments).

- it will not work with tourers/sport tourers like the C14 as the instrument binnacle is a fair bit taller than the tank.

this looks like a better option but still not sure:

This one appears to be even worse. The reach on it is even shorter and when you lift it up there is not another pivot point to give you a horizontal platform to a camera on.

It's designed to attach a Ram Mount extension to. With the 4" Ram Mount, it would work fine, if it were not for the glove box.

I'm just using a standard tripod camera mount by Ram-Mount on My handlebars. It's working ok.

Short little video I shot yesterday, using a standard 3' Ram Mount on the handlebars.

Maybe you could "help" me with the cnc programming code for that beautiful luggage rack setup you made for the 47L trunk  ;D

Still can't stop dreaming about that little gem!!!  :hail:

My idea was to rotate it 180 degrees so the tank is not an issue.  Would not take too much effort to figure out.

Just though I would throw my 2 cents in, there is not a lot to do when its -10 today.

Anyway I have been riding for 50 years and have been taking picture forever. In my experience, it you want the very best Video on a Motorcycle there is only one place to mount a camera and that's on your helmet. Your head is the best stabilizer out there and if you want smooth Video this is the way to do it. I have hundreds of hours of Video on Road Bikes, Dirt Bikes, ATV's and even  Ice Boats in the Winter with this set-up and have got what a lot of my friends consider the best private Video of them they have seen.

It might cost you maybe $25.00 for this mount,  two 1 inch Ram Ball Mounts and in my case a 1 1/2 adapter. (Ram make any number of different sizes) If anyone is interest I can go into more detail on making the helmet mount but its pretty easy.

The camera also goes were you look so if you want a gauge picture just keep your eyes up and tilt your Helmet down, or turn the thing around to see where you have been or to take pictures of  you buddies behind you. (some of the best views of them)

See the pictures attached, I didn't spend a lot of time taking these stills so bare with me.

I use a Contour HD Camera because its small and very rugged, I can't tell you how may branches this thing has hit and it keeps on ticking. and it tucks in pretty tight if need be.

- i had thought so too , but having experimented with a GoPro on my helmet versus mounted on the side of bike , would say that a solid bike mount is the best.

- anyhow , you can see and evaluate for yourself in these two videos (the first is helmet mounted) and the second is bike mounted.

- that and with a helmet mount , the appearance/perception of elevation changes and curvature is largely lost.

- example :

HWY 4 - Brilliant Curves & Elevation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o868vRUV5yM#)

.

- and if you tend to ride fast , a cam mounted on your helmet is a constant distraction , not to mention the fact that you can't check on what the cam is doing (there were times when I could not remember whether I had pressed the recording button or not).

- for a solid bike mount , you need to take your time to select the place and fashion a good mount. And you'll also need to test.

cheers

Nice Video's, but I guess you have never riding in Canada, you would need to spend a lot of time finding a smooth road up here. So I guess its a matter as you say of experimenting. My choice would still be the side of the Helmet, basically the rider view.

pistole, can you share a little more info & pics on how and where you mounted it on your bike? I like the camera view from there but not sure how you achieved it. I get nervous trusting my $300 camera to a suction cup mount of double sided tape.

- hi.

- below is the present setup that is on the bike. Its zip-tied to the R&G Adventure Bars (crash bars).

.
.

- before the R&G bars were installed , I had the setup below (again zip tied , but to the fairing's side strakes). It worked too , but the GoPro was too close to the fairing and the vid showed too much of the bike.

- that and all that hot air breathing constantly on the cam was/would probably not be such a great thing ....

.

- anyhow , good luck experimenting ! And yeah , I don't trust the suction cup either , but if you secure the cam with a tether , it would really expand your choices of places that you could put the cam.
