Title: Farkles and such..... =o)
Post by: CMH GUY on March 02, 2013, 09:41:34 PM
well I am in Columbus, OH and a great friend of mine is up near Detroit with a heated garage and we both have Connies...  Decided to trailer up and do some work on the connies for safety reason... and the HATE of the Silver Rims!  So..

Before..

after...taped off and Plasti dip sprayed .... Not sure of how they will hold up but I'm willing to try for $7 bucks a can...  and only took a can and a little more..

Nice aux lights. What brand and model? I dont mind the silver wheels but those rotors were ugly. Good you painted those.

yup I agree ....  but will be an easy touch up..  if not it all peals off...  then might look into powder coating

hahahahah
because $7 worth of material and about $200 worth of time, doesn't warrant the effort when you have to peel the crap back off, and scrape,a nd scrape, and scrape some more; and curse, and do it right..... ::)
just sayin'
Hopefully you used the "pre-dip" prep spray.....it's designed for adhesion enhancement....but the OEM powdercoating on the rims is a really slick and bulletproof coating....likely the prep wouldn't provide any "tooth" for it to bond to anyways.

 :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
There ARE some pretty robust paint finishes out there that would surely hold up better... and can still be touched up.

let us know how the next tire change goes....
the stuff is ok for bedliner, not so much for wheels....getting the tires off and powdercoating is the norm.
Guys that do powdercoating really curse folks that apply odd finishes to stuff they send for coating, because it turns a simple job for them, into a nightmare.

Now after I badmothed this stuff for rims....I'll come back and THANK YOU PROFUSELY for showing me the stuff, as it is PERFECT for those wanting to change they color of the bike, and or protect the factory paint job.....   :hail: :hail: :goodpost: :chugbeer: :chugbeer: :rotflmao: :hail:

on the website they show the color we all wanted.... KAW GREEN......
Looks like I'll be doing the "dip-my-bike" job when it warms up

If Plasti Dip doesn't hold up I wonder if a spray bed liner might work a little better.

figured there would be a ONE that didnt think or research before he opened his mouth...  Think about it for a second next time before you open and insert foot....  you have to do all what I did to powder coat or paint....  ie.... take wheels off, take rotors off, tape up bearings or take them out so your $200 worth the time us MUTE!  and to get it off it PEELS OFF, NO SCRAPING NEEDED...  do a you tube search on it will show you how easy it goes on and comes off...  guys are painting their entire cars $30K to $40K cars..  and peeling it off no problem!!!  AND no pre spray needed!
Also if I peel it off the powder coater will not even know it was on there enless I tell him/her!

I also didnt say it was gonna last forever and was bullet proof...  I know guys that have painted their vehicle rims and has lasted so why not try it on my bike..  Even if it only works for a summer its worth it to me!

Bah, Eric...pay him no mind...anyone that says Plasti Dip would be a good 'bedliner' doesn't know his a$$ from a hole in the ground so I wouldn't expend too much energy on stupidity...

And remind me to NEVER use that guy for a time & materials quote for ANYTHING!!

$200 worth of time??  See, that's what I don't get from "know-it-all" types like him...if this is something I want to do, and I enjoy it, how do you calculate that as a chargeable time??!

Pure, unadulterated NONSENSE!  ::)

Just sayin'

Wheels look AWESOME, by the way...yours AND mine!!   8)

If it doesn't hold up, we'll peel it and go with another option...easy peazy!!!

And now for something completely different..almost..

Dang it, I'm in one of those moods, I can't decide if I want to make peace

  (coin flip......hmm.....tails,  :stirpot: it is.)

..SO,regardless of method and ease of reversal, why would anyone want to take perfectly good
silver wheels (that go well with any color) and make them look dirty, black, and cheap?

Do you mean like the 2012+ Concours coming off the assembly line?  ???

While I normally agree with your overall point, my bike is black and it looks awesome with black wheels...

I have an M109 with chrome wheels and would never go with black wheels on that bike.

But, wheel color and bike color for that matter, are a personal choice...so to each their own.

So, I guess it IS a moot point...!!!   :P  ;D

just a quick fyi, I dipped the wheels on my wrangler 10,000 miles ago.. no scratches or peeling.  For prep, all I did was wipe down the surface w/ rubbing alcohol.

Looks great for under $10. It might be an interesting idea for people's bags that have a passenger all the time. Coat the bags and no more skid marks. I think Jeremy did use a trunk liner paint and taped it nicely. to give it design.

Welcome bro!  :chugbeer:

Uh oh, Eric...ZG saw our wheels...he has the sweetest black C14 on the forum...but he powder coated his...he might be pissed at us for going the $7 route...lol!

Thanks all...and I agree, I will fit in around here...Eric will too...and he has a decade of AF active duty time as well!  He is a good friend.  Has a sweet black M109 too!  Now that my Connie's wheels are black, I think my black bike may be sweeter than his though...NAH!!!  Eric, post a pic of that bad boy!

Oh by the way, ZG, your powder coat thread was the reason I went the route Eric & I took...no way I was going to tear this thing apart like you had to!  Yours looks so awesome though, I knew I had to do some blacking out of the silver to emulate it...not nearly as sweet because, truthfully (Eric will vouch for this), you get what you pay for...but this will do...for now! ;-)

I like it, and for the $ you can't go wrong. Especially since if you don't like it the stuff just peels off. Like the other guy posted a lot of car forums have people using it. I did my Jeeps rims 8K miles ago and they're holding up great. Even through the winter.

Gotta love a heated garage. Definitely beats working in a parka with frozen fingers.

took the plati dip even farther ....  bought the extension for the handle bars from a member (were raw) so needed to cover them up so they didnt rust when I got caught in the rain ... so I plati dip (sprayed) them ....  and then moved to the hub and swing arm ...  love the look and the rims have about 1500 miles on them , NO WORRIES and they look great still !

took the plati dip even farther ....  bought the extension for the handle bars from a member (were raw) so needed to cover them up so they didnt rust when I got caught in the rain ... so I plati dip (sprayed) them ....  and then moved to the hub and swing arm ...  love the look and the rims have about 1500 miles on them , NO WORRIES and they look great still !
...

...
What extensions are those?

The extensions are made by Phil (Phil'sFarkles, Phil's Rack, Phil's T nuts),  in Texas.  They are made from Aluminium and Stainless, so they should not rust.  But since you were making everything else black, why not.  ;)

And now for something completely different..almost..

  http://grammarist.com/usage/moot-mute/ (http://grammarist.com/usage/moot-mute/)  :grouphug:  :stirpot:

Dang it, I'm in one of those moods, I can't decide if I want to make peace
or stir the pot.  ::)
  (coin flip......hmm.....tails,  :stirpot: it is.)

..SO,regardless of method and ease of reversal, why would anyone want to take perfectly good
silver wheels (that go well with any color) and make them look dirty, black, and cheap?

Marty: Thanks for pointing out the mute vs. moot thing. I am convinced 99% of the people mispronounce and/or misspell the word "moot".  It rhymes with "boot", folks.
OK...that' it for today's grammar session... Sorry.

Wait, what? 99%? In my 55 years on this rock I've never heard anyone say mute when they meant moot, and yes, it rhymes with boot.    :stirpot:

Love the black, hides all the brake dust on the wheels, and looks really cool too. Mine is scheduled for the plastidip treatment as well, right after completing a few mods I have on order. (sorry, I'm not ready to say that other word, lol) Who even thought of that word?
