Title: Decal removal
Post by: wahrsuul on February 25, 2013, 12:24:09 PM
Ok, I've seen threads on how to debadge the tank, but nothing about how to remove the big vinyl "decal" on the lower fairing and side covers.  I want to paint the bike, and need to get that off.  Sand it off?  Heat?

Are these decals put on by the previous owner? Anycase, try this.
If you can get a corner up a little, use 'GOO GONE', it dissolves the adhesion compound. Might take a little time, but no marks will be left.

The factory did not use any decals on the bike. The area you are speaking of is painted, unless a PO added some vinyl stick ons to the bike. If you are going to repaint, all you need to do is sand it.

if you are talking about the trim pinstripes, those are actual thin tape, which was applied before a clearcoat was applied....virtually impossible to remove nicely. You end up having to sand the clearcoat and tape down, and then scrape the tape off....and feather all the edges with wet sanding....a royal P.I.T.A.

went thru it during the COGZilla buld, it had the pinstripes....arggggg. :'(

with that said, your sig shows you have a 1999, it had no such stripes, or decals, only factory "stickers" which peel off with a heatgun, or hairdryer heat.
