Title: Opinions wanted about new purchase.
Post by: Scaffolder on January 27, 2013, 10:22:57 AM
So I own a 2010 and decided to buy a new 2011. I looked everywhere comparing prices and found that the closest dealer to me would beat the price of the lowest one I found. So I had them order me a 2011 silver. She said it would only take a few days after I gave her a check for the $12,500 she quoted me. I paid it about a week and a half before Christmas. I thought I'd get it home by Christmas.
I asked around the 20th of December and it wasn't in yet. "Maybe next week."
I gave it about two weeks and she said it was in and was surprised I didn't come in yet. I went right over with my trailer to get it and she said it wasn't prepped yet, but it is right over there. So I go and look it over. First surprise- It's black not silver. Second surprise- scratch on seat. Third surprise- windscreen looked like ZORO signed it with a diamond ring. I had a quick talk with her about these problems and she said she would have them buff out the scratches. It was almost closing time so I just left. Before they opened again I left her a long message not to buff the windscreen and replace the screen and seat. The color didn't bother me too much, even though if I went with a black one, I would have gotten a 2012 with black wheels. They did order the parts.
So a month later (+or-) this past Friday, I call and leave a message for her so I can come and get it . She never calls back. I call again on Saturday 11:00 am or so and talk to her about the bike. The shield and seat have been changed and she wasn't sure if it has been prepped yet. I had a great conversation with her about ho nice the upcoming week looked for riding. She agreed and said she would ask out back and call me right back. No call back. I call back at around 1:20pm and she is not available. I told him to tell her I want to pick up my bike today. She told him to tell me Tuesday is better for them. I told him weekends are better for me and wanted to get it today. Have her call me so we can figure something out. No call back!
So now I feel like telling them to keep it and give me my money back. Am I out of line, or am I thinking the same as you guys would be?
Very aggravated!!

Wow, I am very surprised it took this long to ponder getting your money back.  Get your money back and go somewhere else.  If the sales department is this way, who knows how the service department is.  If it were me, and I was getting a new bike, I would have been out of there a long time ago riding a 2013.

Sorry to here about your sad story. Buying a new bike should be a joyous and happy occasion. Yours turned fairly negative and adversarial.

My rule is both parties have to be loaded and ready to go. The buyer with the money, the seller with the bike. Get it done. If the seller wants to shop around for a bike for me, I can't stop him. But my commitment will be soft not firm without a money deposit or anything while they are doing it.

Remember: Buyer Beware. On a tba transaction, Double Buyer Beware. (to be announced).

I would be well past my breaking point. They took your money in good faith to provide a specified product. They have not fulfilled their part of the contract in any way. I would settle for nothing less than a complete refund of all money advanced to the dealer. And today would be better than tuesday.

That sux man, sorry to hear the pain...  :(

Maybe it's the Connie Gods trying to tell you to keep your 2010?  :-\

Tell her the bike you ordered by Tuesday or your lawyer by Wednesday.

I'm thinking a shiny new 2013 for $12,500.00.

WHO is this "She"..?
is it a salesperson?

Go right to the owner, and demand he examine the situation, and take appropriate action.
that is simply unacceptable service by someone that clearly doesn't give-a-$#!+ about customer relationships....or the fact we all communicate here ABOUT SUCH ACTIVITIES.... make them aware of our little discussions on ethics....and dealer choices. ;)

And to think....all this hassle just for a better insurance rate and coverage.  ;)  Are you really saving money, would it not make more sense to have a bike 100% paid for and enjoy that for a good long while? I also am a bit confused with your insurance company, your coverage and payments should never change unless you add or delete from your coverage.

Another sad example of what happens once they have your money. I try to never pay up front for anything any more. I have very little faith in customer service once the motivation of getting paid is gone. Just amazing how different things are when they want your money vs. when they already have it.

Did you get a contract? Did you specify silver? I think they looked around for other dealers who wanted to dump their '11s and found that they could get a better deal on a black C14 than a silver C14, so they bought one from another dealer.
Any dealer should be doing hand stands to get you a new bike as we are in the middle of winter, got snow falling as I type...

I agree with most of the opinions so far ...... get your $$ and look elsewhere. It is a principle thing now. I wouldn't want the salesperson or dealership to profit from such poor customer service.

Well, you were fortunate in getting a black one instead of silver.
As far as the remainder of the BS, just go get your money back and look elsewhere.  You obviously don't want to do business with this dealer.

Don't know how much deposit you're talking about, but at this point just get your money back and take your business else where. If this is how you're being treated before the sale, guess how you'll be treated after the sale.

Find the bike you want at another dealer and return to your original dealer and get your money back. Thats what I did. I was told "no one" in Southern California had the bike I wanted.  I found the bike 50 miles away, I bought the bike and returned to the dealer and when the salesman went into his "how about this bike", I told him I already found and bought the color bike I wanted. They gave me the "we cant find your check" run around. I then said "no problem, when you do find it, to destroy my personal check because I was going to ride to my bank and cancel it.

Man of Blues-First off her is the owner. I normally skip the whole salesperson thing. I like to get to the point. The future dealer/customer relationship doesn't look good if I follow through with this.

Not sure if getting my money back right now is an easy option. Because they had to get it from another dealership. The dealer isn't open again until Tuesday.

Pokey and ZG-- I did only go through all of this for the better coverage in insurance. The insurance plan includes total loss protection for the first two years of owning a "new" bike. My 2010 just had it's second birthday. Not too sure if the purchase make perfect sense in the long run. I guess it would only if it were to get totaled. My premium stays the same.

To top it all off- my 2010 is at their dealership on consignment. So I really put all my cards on the table for this purchase. I have a lot to think about through the next couple days. They really got me steaming when they knew I wanted to ride this week and never called me back.

Well, you were fortunate in getting a black one instead of silver.

Not really.  Silver is not only a much better color, but probably much harder to obtain.  Black is available every year.   I had to wait for my dealer to do inter-dealer stuff to finally get me a silver.

Silver stays cleaner looking longer.

Silver stays cleaner looking longer.

Indeed it does.  Nothing looks as good as a perfectly clean and polished black vehicle... but it stays that way for only a partial day, if you are lucky.  After that, it shows every bit of dust and dirt.  It also shows scratches and defects worse than any other color.  It is also much hotter from the sun, too.

I know it is easy for me to say...but I would have been pi$$ed off after I found out the bike was black instead of silver like you wanted. Now you paid up front in full and if you signed a purchase agreement then that bike should be silver delivered on the day in the agreement. IMHO

- why did you pay upfront for a non-existent , sight unseen , bike ?

Not a full purchase agreement. Kind of a receipt for funds paid and vin# of vehicle.
I try to buy bikes with one payment. This dealer just didn't happen to have the vehicle in their store. Not the brightest purchasing method I've been through.

There is a silver one at Souhegan Motorsports in Milford, NH.  Maybe they could swap for it. When I bought from Cliff I wanted the black in the worst way but the silver was sitting next to it. I could see every imperfection in black just from sitting on the floor. Took the silver and never looked back.

I talked to Cliff. I didn't care for him. I bought both of my other bikes from Naults. I dealt with Paul Nault and he was awesome to deal with. He hit the rock bottom price real fast. Cliff was over $1,000 off (until I told him what I was paying for a 2011). Then he gave me normal prices. Just too late. Paul is out of the picture for a while.

I got my best price from Robb from Milford NH. When I told Honda Depot the price, they beat it by $200. So I settled. Big mistake!

Depot and Rochester are the closest and i never go there.  My experience at Naults is exactly the reverse of yours, in the end if you get a decent deal for the bike you want all is well.

Guess we all know what to do about Depot.  Good luck and keep us posted.

I bought my 2010abs from Naults in Jan. 2011. I paid $13,000 otd. That was a great price at the time when shopping. Cliff seemed to give me a little bit more of a run around.

I kind of skimmed, so I may have missed something, but I'm confused... why did you give away $12k+ without at the same time walking away with a motorcycle (or at least something of equal or greater value)??? It doesn't matter if you had a purchase contract or not, I don't drop 12 large on anything without having the thing. If they want a deposit, I say sure, here's my signature. Maybe $50, if I'm feeling generous that day.

I guess I was a little anxious. I've never had any issues buying vehicles or motorcycles. I usually pay and get it. The only kicker here was they had to order it. So I figured I'd just write one check and not two. I tried to use my AMEX card, but she wouldn't take a credit card for a purchase.
I will figure out by the end of tomorrow what to do about all of this. I might just bring my old 2010 home with me and my money.

Well I went to the dealer today and went through with it. I feel kinda dumb for even asking the original question posted. If I backed out at this point, I would have had to start the whole process over again. I was really steaming that she didn't get back to me when I wanted her to. After talking to her today, she really figured the way the weather turned out I couldn't have been too anxious to get it. So she doesn't know me too well. I picked it up today. When I got home, I took the first battery cover screw out, so I could put the battery tender pigtail on. I saw one already installed right in front of my face. It didn't make up for all the frustration, but it was a start.

I ended up taking the black "surprise" color. I do love black vehicles. I just hate trying to keep them clean. It looks great and feels great.
I still have my 2010 on consignment there. I will leave it there for a few more weeks. If they don't sell it by then, I'll take it home and sell it myself.
