Title: Muzzy exhaust repacking question
Post by: wildnphx on January 14, 2013, 07:13:12 PM
So I got the repack kit from Muzzy and it was long overdue...  Problem is the new packing is longer then the the can so I'm not sure if I cut it to fit or if I am just suppose to push it in and make it fit which looks like it would be real difficult.  Anyone have experience doing this?

Call Muzzy? Did you get a picture of the inside of the pipe with no packing? Cost?, if you don't mind my asking. I've got duals I got used may need a repack. How did you decide yours needed it?

Personally I would be stuffing it in there - but will be interested to hear what Muzzy has to say.

I bought my system 10 months ago and one exhaust canister was loose going onto the mid pipe so Muzzy was kind enough to repair the broken weld for free.  While they had it they noticed it needed repacked and called me to ask me how many miles I had on it and what my riding style was...  Well I put about 25k miles on it and ride it like I stole it so that answers that question :)  They repacked the one they had and sent me the repack hit for the other one which is what I am having so much fun trying to install.  I will give them a call today and get some instructions on how to properly install this.  I am really glad they told me about it needing repacked because it was really really disinigrated and in dire need of being replaced.  The kit is about $35 per side but allot cheaper than replacing a complete carbon fiber can.  The difficult part was getting the exhaust cap off cause once you remove the screws the cap still don't just come off cause they use some silicon and needs some serious manipulation to get loose, they told me that sometimes on must use a long wooden dowel from the opposite end pushed threw to have get it off.  I'll let you know what they say about installing the packing cause I tried and tried and I seriously doubt I'm going to be able to simply "stuff" it in there.

$35 for fiberglass wrap?  Must be a special blend.....

ok I figured it out... it was the right part just was hanging up in the lip of the end cap... I ended up removing the entire can from the bike and removing the other end cap then inserting the packing and then I could see exactly where it was catching and I was able to coax it into place.  Bike is back together and sounds great.

Yes they wrap the fiberglass insulation around the metal insert and it overlaps itself and makes it allot thicker on one side verses the other which positions the metal insert off center but when you put in together the metal insert needs center on the end caps to fit correctly so it definitely takes some work to get it positioned just right so it all fits together as intended.

I had about 23k miles or so on the Exhaust and was there was a quite a difference in sound afterwards.  The old packing was needing repacked very very badly I am just glad I did it before damaging my carbon fiber canisters.

I repacked my Two Brothers carbon fiber slip on at 40K. Total waste of time. The old packing was just fine. The only way to check it is to drill out the rivets and pull it all out. I will stick with Two Bros.
