Title: WalMart suspends ammo ordering
Post by: jim snyder on January 14, 2013, 12:38:37 PM
Just heard on the radio that Walmart is suspending all ammunitions orders until further notice until they hear what recommendations will be implimented by the administration. Very sad that Americas biggest retailer who has made billions of dollars off of sportsman is doing stuff like this.

I've studied and taught how to compete with Wal Mart for small businesses for a long time and their secret has always been their supply chain. It's "sell it today, replenish tonight, sell it again tomorrow, repeat." When I saw how long my long WalMart has been out of ammo, it was evident that they suspended their supply chain somewhere about a month out. It'll also take a month or more to refill the pipeline if  they start up again. More lines being drawn. Look for an exemption from ObamaCare to come sometime in the spring.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.  Buy a press and roll your own.  Takes some time, but saves money and you can get better quality ammo.  More important, you don't run out in times like this.
Learned that lesson well in '08.

Years ago, they attempted to tax ammo to oblivion as at the time they couldn't pass very many anti-gun laws. With China buying up all the lead, reloading  as you said will become necessary to just have ammo as opposed to saving money because the margins are closing fast and it will narrow much more in the coming months and years of this current regime.

Don't fool yourself into thinking that your safe here either.... Unless you have a large stockpile of reloading supplies your just as easy to shut down; remove or limit the purchase of large quantities of primers or powders from the equation and your in the very same boat.... Politicians may be crazy stupid but rarely are they naive!

Yeah Tony, I forgot to mention that too, primers and powders. All they need now is an incident to involve large amounts of powder and they can work the terror angle and shut us down cause they can't simply outlaw powder. Feinstein said it a few weeks ago, they won't get fooled again like they did 20 years ago.

Reloading for shotgun is just about not worth it for me right now due to component prices.  I have a nice progressive press that has been in the box for over a year.  It is not like I shop for 100 primers or one bag of shot or wads at a time.  I would go in with a friend and we would buy a full ton of shot and maybe 5 cases of wads at a time.  I would buy at least 4 sleeves (20,000) primers at a time.  If I watch sales I can buy Remington or Federal shells for under $6 per box.  I cannot see reloading if it costs just under $5. per box.

Even at the wholesalers were I have accounts, Primers and powder for rifles and pistols are just not available.

Walmart says this isn't true.

I won't be shopping there anyway, but they say it's not true.

Makes you wait for the quid pro quo headline: "Waiver on Affordable Care Act Granted to Wal-Mart Stores".

Watch for it and remember you saw it here first.

Ron, you probably nailed it. When I first heard that walmart was meeting with O and suspending sales, I told my wife somebody was wheelin' n dealin' - but I never thought of the obamacare angle...  Steve

That's why I have over 100,000 primers, about 10,000 empty brass (thank you local pd dept) and about 12,000 in bullets, all ready to roll.  Again, I learned in '08.  There are still plenty of components out there, so start buying.

Shotgun-wise, I inherited about 300lbs of shot.  So I'm good there.  But its true, if you had to buy shot its really not worth it.

We need to remember back when william jefferson clinton was in office.  He signed the Chemical Weapons Convention with the UN.  This treaty not only allows UN security to search and seize private and public property on American soil without a warrant, but makes the National guard available to protect the inspectors from those who would resist.  Gunpowder is specifically in their jurisdiction.  All that we are seeing has been being put in place one piece at a time since the 1960's

BTW,  Through the business, I have accounts at three different reloading supply vendors.  They are ALL out of large and small rifle and large and small pistol primers, as well as medium rifle (4895 heat range)powders in every brand.  The back order lists are at least 30 days out.

Pretty soon it seems there are a lot of people that are not going to be able to go to the range with no ammo and few reloading stuff available. Me included.

And to think, just a few short weeks ago, many here laughing and poking fun of folks burying their legally owned firearms. Calling them kooks, conspiracy theorists, militia types and all manner of slurs. Who's laughing now?

Had occasion to stop in to Walmart yesterday to look for some rebate coupons for some sparkplugs for my son's car and wandered through the gun section. As usual, they had 2-5 boxes of 20 gauge shotgun shells and that was about all. I got to talking to  the clerk who is stationed there and she told me that she had put out 10 cases of ammunition of all types on Friday (this was Saturday about 10:30 am) and it was all gone. She said she's been getting it almost every day and if you wanted to buy some, better get there by 8:00 am. There was a sign limited purchases to two boxes per customer per visit. She also said she was getting tired of being accused of Walmart snuggling up to Obama.

I stopped in at my local Walmart and the clerk there told me his manager had cut off all ammo orders and his manager got that directive from HQ. They only had some shotgun shells, a few 20rd boxes of rifle hunting ammo, 30-06, 30-30 and some .243.

Wonder how much local latitude there is  in stocking? I've heard as much as 20% of the stock at a WM is local specific and it seems to be so. I've compared their inventory on a lot of things as I travel around the country and there seems to be a significant local flavor. For instance, there are two in my county. One is in the city and has a heavier "ethnic flavor" to its stock. It also (in the past anyway) carried more of the semi-auto rifes and pistol accessories, while the local one (near me) has a slightly differnt mix of inventory. Curious..

When I lived in Dallas, three walmarts in the near south suburbs quit handling any sort of hunting equipment, firearms or ammunition.  That was in 2008.  The funny thing, the walmart next to a high crime area still keep their ammo sales going. You could always find 9mm and 7.62 X 39 rounds there.  One store in Indiana actually sells reloading supplies and gun powder as well as the usual guns an ammo.   I think  the individual stores have a lot of options.

Here in Indianapolis, none of the stores I have been to sell any firearms but all sell ammo when it is in stock. I talked to a guy at the gun show here in town Saturday from northeast Indiana. He said their store still sells shotguns and rifles but quit selling handguns 7-8 years ago.
And for the record if anyone is listening, I did not buy any assault rifles at the gun show.

The Dallas/Ft.Worth local area Walmarts quit selling long guns a number of years ago, but then most of the outlying store started back up a few years ago. Some of the further outlying stores never stopped (Weatherford, Granbury, etc).
My store isn't getting much of the ammo for the .223/9mm/.22LR, but when the do, it disappears very quickly. I've quit even walking by that area of the store. I've had much better success with Academy Sports.
