Has anyone successfully registered additional keys using the method supplied in the service manual section 1-24 (Page 34)?
It states that you put an existing registered FOB near the steering lock, press key knob until it states "Transponder registration No. 1 OK", then repeat with the new key fob until it indicates the turn key symbol. You then turn the knob off to on and it should register "ECU Registration OK" an revert to normal operation.
Page 35 of the manual says that replacing individual Kipass FOB Key or Transponder parts only require this procedure. It does say that for other procedures, you have to use the KDS3 software.
The reason I ask is I am picking up two credit card (non fob) keys as backups to my newly acquired Concours and would like to avoid the time and money to pay the vendor to do it. Seems to me the manual is straight forward.
I looked around but it doesn't appear self registering new keys has been discussed on this forum.

My dealer programed My passive fob for just the cost of the unit. I think it cost Me 34 dollars. He had never done one before, and it still only took Him 10 minutes. Lee's Kawasaki in Harrodsburg, KY.

The way I read page 34 it refers to registering new KIPASS parts to existing FOBs, not registering additional fobs.

I interpreted it a little differently reading page 35 which states "if you add a new fob, then do the procedure on 34, if you add anything else, you need KD3".
Which is why I spawned this thread. I do have 2 credit card keys waiting at the local dealership. What I may do is take them home and attempt the procedure outlined above to register my own keys. :)
If all else fails, I'll have to pay the dealership anyway right? 8)

It's def. worth a try. In the early days there was a lot of discussion of fob programming and the smart guys agreed the KDS3 machine was required. I hope you prove them wrong!

I don't believe there could be any harm caused by trying what you propose, especially if you are good with the idea that it may not work and may require a dealer to program the bike to recognize the fob.
The instructions you refer to on page 1-24 are specifically to be used when all new KiPass parts are new (the steering lock unit, KiPass ECU and DFI ECU).
There are specific instructions on replacing only a KiPass fob on pages 1-23 and additional instruction on 1-25 and both are in agreement that the software / hardware system KDS3 (Kawasaki diagnostic system (or software) rev. 3) is required.

Looks like KD3 is required. I couldn't get it to begin the initiation sequence described in the service manual with the existing key. Oh well......one way to ensure your service departments stay full, have all new keys and tire pressure sensors require shop time. ;)
