Title: Introduction & Question
Post by: Nocage on October 15, 2012, 12:13:30 PM
Hello All,

I'm new to the site and thought I'll introduce myself. My name is Frank, I live in Sacramento, CA, been riding since '04 on cruisers and sports bikes, and just purchased my first C14 last week. I'm in love :)  -- never had heated grips before.

My first oil change is approaching fast (break-in period) and I was wondering if anyone had a bad experience with the following combination: Motul engine oil and K&N oil filter (KN 303). I always used Motul and K&N for previous bikes and was wondering if any problems arose among the C14 riders using these?

Also, what brand do you recommend for the final gear case oil? I don't know if Motul makes that.

I look forward to exchanging stories with fellow C14 riders.

Frank

Welcome Frank.

That combo should be fine. Lots of folks, me included, like the K&N 303. I use Mobil 1 MC oil but the Motul will be fine.

I use the Mobil 1 synth gear oil for the final gear case, as do lots of guys here.

Welcome to the club.

Use the "search" feature, from the main page, someone most likely has started a thread and it most likely can answer any question you might have

Welcome, I use JASO rated Rotella T6 synth in mine.

I only expect to get 150,000 - 200,000 miles from mine. But its only at 63,000 and loves this oil.

That's a long time between oil changes.

I use Motul full synthetic 300V 10W-40, year round.  The recommendations are a bit goofy when it comes to temperature breakpoints for different viscosities but I've just decided to run Motul 10-40 year around and have no issues.  Then again you usually don't know if you're using a good oil or a bad oil until 60,000 miles down the road.  I go 5,000 mile intervals.

For the final drive I just use Mobil 1 full synthetic 90 weight GL5 and be done with it, at 10,000 mile intervals (every other oil change.)  I doubt there is an advantage to using Motul's equivalent if they make it.  For that matter I doubt there is an advantage to Motul over any other good quality full synthetic, I use it because I like the cool green color.  I can't see the final drive oil so why bother.

I've seen mixed success with K&N air filters.  When you see dust on the inside of the filtered area, it just kind of turns you off.  The air filter, in my opinion, is more critical than the oil filter so why go cheap just because it's replaceable.  It's such a pain in the ass to get to the air filter to begin with I'd rather just replace it and be done with it for a while.
