Title: TIRE THREAD... How are your PR3 fronts wearing compared to the rears?
Post by: ZG on September 19, 2012, 06:21:06 PM
So my rear PR3 is getting close to the wear bars, think I'll replace it before the rain starts, which we all know is coming sooner than later...  :(

I was gonna replace both front and rear together but in looking at the front it still looks pretty good...  :-\

What have you guys been noticing on front vs rear wear on the PR3's, are you getting 1 front to every 2 rears or less or more?

What erks me is I just had my wheels off last month for the other work and the rear still looked like it had at least a couple more months left in it, but man once they start to go I guess they go fast!  :o

I don't want to just do the rear now and then have the front go shortly there after (even though right now looks fine) and have to go back in for the front, your thoughts?  :-\

Replace them both.  Better to be confident than to be wondering with every corner.  Plus the extra front can be saved as a emergency spare.

I just bought my second set of PR3's, but I'm going to run the current ones as long as I can.  The rear is running out of grove in the center, but the sides still have plenty of bite.  The front still looks pretty good.

Motorcycle Superstore just announced a sale on PR3's, something like $32x.00 shipped for the 190/55 + 120/70.

+1

This little trick saved me from buying a new front tire. And the one I had will get me through the winter and then some I bet.

Wow, that's completely opposite from my stock tires (your old stock tires). The front wore out quickly on the sides (3500 miles); the back looks perfectly fine. I really want to try a new set of tires, but I could probably buy a new BX for the front and ride it for another season. Other than mileage, I've really had no complaints about these tires.

How many miles do you have on the PR3s? What kind of ridding do you do? Are you using a 50 or 55 on the rear?

I've read some mixed reviews about the PR3s from other motorcycle forums. The general consensus is that they are great for performance but only OK for mileage.

Hey OL, glad to hear you got some use out of those stones...  ;)

I've got about 5500 on the PR3's, not many highway miles, (maybe 10% highway if that), the wear is pretty even across the whole tire, no flat spot, it is just getting down to the wear bars.

14k fronts, 6-7k rears

That's kinda what I was thinking too Steve, but given how fast the rear went from ok to not at the end of life I'm on the fence about the front...  :-\

Straight FL roads and I'm skinny and not a lot of weight on front, backs go flat and worn at 6-7k, front still good

I have about 4K on my PR3s and they are wearing pretty well.  I have no idea how long they will last, but probably a bunch longer than the old Avon Storms they replaced.  I barely got 5K out of them.  My PR2s got close to 7K.

Sounds like you guys aren't using the front brakes very much.  ;)

I've probably got 30% left on the front, while the back is almost to the wear bars.

I know this has been discussed before. I still have the stock tires on my 2010 C14 I now have just over 12,000 km (8000 Miles) and am just about at the wear bar (on the rear). From what I am reading that is about twice what you guys are getting. For next season I will be changing them both. I was thinkong about the PR3's, which you all say last about 7000 miles. Do you guys think I will get the same increase in wear that I saw with the stock (ie 15000 miles). Would be a phenominal thought. I ride mostly on the Praries in Canada. So all straight ahead, and once or twice per year head to the Rockeys for some twisty action.
Thanks, and sorry for probably repeating what may have already been said

Wow, all the money you've spent on that bike and you cheaped out on $125 for a new front tire?  I don't get that...

I always swap them in pairs, so if nothing else, I've got fresh rubber front and back.  Maybe that's just me (and Steve).  ;)

I did change my oil today, and even put on a new filter (the outside of it was dirty).  ::)

Actually Rob, if you re-read Steve's post even he said 2 rears to 1 front...  ;)

Trust me, if the front needed changing I would have, but it literaly looks only 50%.  :)

Yep, fresh oil change for me today too.  :)   :chugbeer:

Are these tires the ones to get? Stock tires blows.

Also, I noticed you have the ProjektD license plate holder, did you install yourself? If so, to remove the bottom cowling, so i can swap the plate holders, does the whole tailend need to come apart or does the bottom cowling comes off easily after removing the plastic retaining clips.

Are you referring to the rear fender eliminator? If so, the one I have is from Muzzys, and no I had it put on at the dealer before even picking up the bike brand new, sorry I'm no help on that question but I'm sure if you do a search you'll find your answer...

I just changed my rear PR3 at 7800 mi, the Italian Dolomites hairpins killed it, I had nothing left on the side compound, but plenty in the center, enough though to go back home.
Front is still in great condition...

There is no need to do all of that.i installed mine with just removing the seat. You can access all the bolts without removing the cowling.

so I know you polish them. ;D

I am on third set of PR3's - first set went 5500 and though there was tread on the front changed both at same time. Second set changed the rear at 5700 and "thought" I could get another grand out of the front. Another 300 miles of spirited riding in the mountains shredded the middle of each side and thank goodness the bike shop in Blairsville GA had one in stock and installed in on a Saturday (despite an overly tight caliper bolt that could only be removed with a socket welded to it - another story for another day....).

Will change both at the same time going forward - awesome tires - never have suddenly broken loose, deal with rain, rain grooves, and tar snakes with aplomb.

Just replaced my rear PR2 with a new one.  It had around 4,000 miles on it and has around 50% life in it but was plugged and leaked intermittently (odd shaped hole).  Since I had a lot of interstate roadtripping mileage on that tire it was wearing very well as opposed to my normal twisty road attack that seems to eat tires.

So I ended up getting approx 5k miles out of the PR3 rear and approx 8K out of the PR3 front.

Like ZG, about 8k front and 5k rear for me as well. BTW: I'm not much of a knee dragger. Way too chicken $hit. Not only that, I live at 7500' and have about 20% less power then most people at sea level. How do you get 14-15k?

Many factors affect wear rate- weight, speed, temperatures, type of pavement, condition of pavement, amount of slip (due to acceleration and braking), how much cornering and how hard, and tire pressures, are probably the major ones.

But it is strange to see claims that vary from 5k all the way to 15k.

Just put PR3's on a couple hundred miles ago. Interested to see the end mileage. The Angels I had before only lasted about 4.5K miles. That's why I went with the Mich's. However, they don't stick like the Angels. Going to try the new Angel GT's next. Dual compound.

It's funny! I ride faster than anyone else on my commute everyday. I get passed by the occasional trooper, but that is it. Once in a great while I'll tone it down a shade to ride with a bike, but rarely. Maybe because the Northeast is so cold the tires go longer. I usually cruise between 85-95 slowing to just shy of 80 at the common cop stops.

About 6k on my Angels front and rear, the rear looks to be about at half life and the front looks brand new. And yes I ride quite a bit of twisty roads in Ohio, they are plentiful here.  8)

Finally installed the second pair of PR3's today.  Rear was showing cords, front was bald (as in smooth) on the sides, and almost bald in the center.  It was really squared off too.  I removed a 180/55 PR3, so today I installed the 190/55 PR3 to see how that goes.  Always use the stock size front.

I really don't see how anyone can get 2 rears for each front, unless you're doing burnouts, or never use the front brakes and never push the bike in corners.

Saw the most mileage out of these PR3's so far :
Brickstones = 4,897 miles.  Front shot (cupped, squared off), rear still OK for a spare.
Pirelli Angel ST's = 7,307 miles.  Rear showing cords, front OK for a spare.
PR2's = 10,804 miles.  Rear showing cords, front cupped, down to wear bars, causing front end shimmy.
PR3's = 11,863 miles.  Rear showing cords, front bald on sides, squared off badly.

With my bike fully loaded, fuel cell and all; I get between 8k-9k out of my rear and have a little over 12k on my front so far and looks like it will go for a few thousand more. I swapped both before a 6 day rally so I have a front in my garage that has 6k miles on it. I've only used pr3's on this bike, got a nail in the stock rear after 4k and the stock front lasted around 5k. From what I've gathered from the LD riding crowd, its pretty standard to have 2 rears per 1 front.

My bike probably isn't as heavy at 2-up riders, more of 1.5 riding:

I am with you on that . My last set got 14K on the rear and close to 20 on the front. I am not hard on tires. US 36 and 40 are pretty straight roads through Indiana and OHIO. 56 through the Hocking Hills a couple of times a month is the extent of my twisties.

You think all the time I spend at 85+ maybe the tires do not really touch the ground for very long? My mother is convinced this bike has wings.

I only do HWY slab less than 10% of the time, maybe that has something to do with it in comparison to some of you other folks that do lots o' slabbing.  :-\

FWIW though I'm actually quite pleased with the miles I got out of these, I'm not disappointed a bit, I usually only get about 3k miles out of tires on my Gixxer, so to get this many miles out of the PR3's on the ZG is the best I've ever had.  :)
