Title: A Shorter Windshield?
Post by: YtseJam on August 26, 2012, 12:59:21 AM
Just bought a 2011, and I do not like the windscreen at all. The bike is black, so I would like to go with one that has a tint to it and is just a little shorter. After doing some searching, it looks like the Givi is the only one that offers this...true?

If you have "winter" where you live, you will like it at that time.  I find in the summer, the stock 2nd gen blocks too much air and restricts my ability to ride in the mid/upper 90's.

Nope, not true. I have the CalSci tinted 'shorty'

http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Concoursprod.html (http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Concoursprod.html)

The shorty is a lil bit larger than the stock '08/'09 shield but it's shorter than your stock '11 shield.

But for when it's really hot out. I cut down and tinted a stock '08/'09 shield ~4" and it works great!

Is that mph or degrees?     ;)

I bought a dark tinted windshield from CalSci not long ago - I think it's an inch taller than the 08/09 shield.  Didn't like it so last week I cut it down four inches.  Love it now.  I get a fairly clean shot of air at my upper chest and head and it looks good.

Here is the only picture I have handy.  From the riding position you probably only see about two inches of the windshield...

That's what I'm looking for....did you use a Dremmel to trim it? Can you just get it tinted like a normal piee of glass?

I don't find riding in those temps to be fun or comfortable, if it is higher than the 80's I am taking the car.

I purchased the Cee Bailey mini euro cut dark tint and in south florida it works out fine. With it fully extended it works fine for me" when I am in a less wind mood" but I think a taller screen would work out better if you carry a passenger at freeway speeds a bit. Cee had a deal if you buy you got a discount on the second. I just kept the stock screen for those days. The quality of their screen seems vey high.

If I waited for the temperature here to get into the 80's, I would have been parked here since the end of June. The ride from picking the bike up last Sunday was miserable....100+ almost all the way, 4 1/2 hours of it.

Just looked at the CalSci website, I really like the tinted shorty....that might be the way to go! Thanks all!

The folks at calsci are great. Check the length before you order. They might cut it shorter for you.

I bought it as a tinted windshield from CalSci.  I used a saber saw with a very fine blade.  Then a belt sander to clean it up (almost impossible to cut evenly with the saw).  After I had it evened up with the belt sander, I then used 240 grit wet/dry sandpaper, then 400 grit to polish the edge.  Used masking tape to draw the line btw.  From start to finish, including taking it off the bike and putting it back on I probably have an hour of work in it.  The most time consuming is the final sanding.  Not hard if you have the tools.

Thanks!

When I cut mine down I used my band saw and it was VERY easy to do using that. A saber saw would work but a dremel, I guess it would work but I don't think that you'd get as nice a cut and you'd spend a lot of time cleaning up the cut.

I used a 2" cutoff wheel on a die grinder. Took a couple of passes but cut cleanly, finished with sand paper.

Summers and winters are no problem.

Summers - Ride north

Winters - Stay in south FL  :D

I also prefer a shorter shield in the warmer months. I found someone selling a 08-09 stock shield for $40 and it is perfect.

The tint looks good, I have been thinking about tinting it and looking at the options for that.

Since I'm already in California, got the tracking number that says it will be here tomorrow....and thanks for the tip Conrad, if I need to take a little more off I'll go the Saber Saw route!

You'll want to pick up a few plastic or fiber washers/spacers. The CalSci shield is a bit thinner than the stocker where it mounts. If you're anal like me, you'll want something there to take up that space. Pull your stock shield off and you'll see the plastic washers that Kawi puts there, you'll want a few more of these.

Will do...I'm glad I have company in the anal catagory. ;) I'm so bad, the bike is now at the painter to touch up a couple areas that was on the bike when originally purchased that the buyer didn't want to mess with! Being a black bike, hard to hide anything.....!

Here's my cut down stocker

[smg id=349]

Interesting the two concepts for cutting down the Gen 1 shields. Conrad's more square shape and Sgt Mac's more rounded (almost pointy) shape. If I can pick up a used shield I might try to do something in between.

Any buffeting with either shield in the up or down position?

I used my other stock shield as a template for cutting the shield down, so it's identical to the stocker on top. In the down position I get clear air over the top and it feels great! All the way up it's almost the same as the stocker in the full down position. It does have a slight bit of buffeting but I almost never ride with it full up, only in the rain.

Here's my cut down shield.

Looks to be about the same height as Conrad's at the sides, but peaked in the center where his is more square. I like them both, but leaning towards Pope's.

What did each of you do for tinting?

I tried to tint my shield using VHT Niteshades but the valve started to sputter and it messed up my nice even coat. I ended up putting three coats on it and pretty much blacked it out instead of tinting.

Same here. But the valve didn't sputter,  I just couldn't get an even coat, so I just kept layering it on till it was fully blacked out.

The MRA Vario shield is about an inch and half shorter than the original 08 shield if that helps. I love mine and the tinted one looks killer.

Sargent.

Yep, it is the Sargent (probably low version)  World Sport Performance Modular with storage pod (unpainted?  mine is).  Exactly what is on my bike (I have the heated option with infinitely variable remote thermostat).  Have been very pleased with the design and quality.
