I was going North into a head wind, and I reckon the taller windscreen just had too much force on it. The bracket that goes between the two mounts for the windshield broke. It broke at the bottom tab that rides on the center channel when the windscreen moves up and down.
The only part I can find is the entire assembly, motor and all (55036-0003) on most of the sites and at the dealership. It is ~$650, give or take.
All I want is the bracket only. Anyone know a way to find it? I've been searching for motorcycle junk yards but haven't found anything that way yet either.
Thanks for the help.

Same thing happened to me and I had the whole assembly replaced under warranty. I just made sure that the stock screen was back on when I took it in. Not and uncommon fail. There is a forum member who fabricated a stronger fix, try some searching.

Modified and welded mine back together.....
Do you still have the plastic bit? Otherwise its buying the complete unit.

There's one here. UK Postage only!

mine did the same
put the stock screen on and Kawasaki replaced under warranty
-
I bought her used, and tried to get the extended warranty but it was one month too late.
I haven't been able to find the price that broke off either.
I'll do some more searching and see if I can find the new fabricated piece.

Hey Kid, there's someone that's getting ready to part out a C14. They currently have an engine for sale in the For Sale section. You might want to send them a pm to see if that have the part that you're looking for.
Here's a link to their post: http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=18819.0 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=18819.0)

+1
I did the same.

I have the huge C Baily ultra and have been
speeds so fast at high speed in an off road safe environment. I have to believe to break, the part has to be weak or defective (not wind related in any way). Trust me on this ;D
-
I worry about mine also. Have CB Ultra as well and have been to 130 with it. Not broken yet. (knock knock knock)

It is possible that it is not top speed runs, but vibration multiplied by time causing metal fatigue and then failure. Of course, a larger windshield means more weight and more force on the parts... combine that with the above and the possibility of failure increases.
-
I rarely had the stock screen in any position other than the lowest. Now that I have the MRA vario, it is even lower. Loving it and makes riding this bike in warmer weather tolerable.
Thanks for an unrelated confirmation of my choice to keep the screen small.
-
One has to think that they didn't do any upgrades to the parts since day one of the bike and the stock shield was quite short indeed when the bike came out. Virtually no loading on the mechanism compared to the larger shields, I would think. It would be interesting to compare mechanisms from the gen1 to the gen2 bikes, though.

That may be the case, but my huge C Baily has been on for >90,000 miles, has been off-roaded, bridge blasted, and hit every pot hole between Montreal and Los Angeles, and hasn't given up. Of course it may tomorrow.... but so far so good. I think its a quality issue.
'course I also keep a fresh FOB battery in whether it needs changing or not (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/iconhammer.gif)

That goes without saying, Steve.

Please. ;)

hey, give the guy some credit. It took him 17 posts to mention his FOB :chugbeer:
-
His FOB with fresh battery is so powerful it protects my bike a half continent away!

To fix your broken windshield bracket you remove the windshield from the mounts and remove the plastic cover in the front of the bike. You will see the bracket directly in front of you it looks like a big Y. You will note at the bottom this is the portion that is broken. You'll see a hole at the bottom of this bracket. When you move the windshield mechanism up and down you'll see the hole slide along the plate behind it. Take a sharpie stick it in that hole move the windshield mechanism up-and-down to mark the plate behind the bracket. Disassemble that bracket and the plate behind it. Use a dermal with a cutting metal wheel to cut a notch where you marked. Slide a bolt through the backside use to nuts on the front side and tighten them against each other. Make sure there is a little play in the bolt to allow it to freely slide up and down the notch. Mount the plate and bracket then reattach the windscreen mounts to the bracket.

To fix your broken windshield bracket
Thanks for the info and video. Hopefully I will never need it :) Have never seen using silicone on nuts/bolts before, I wouldn't think that would be strong enough to prevent unwinding... I believe a nyloc nut should work better, and/or thread lock.

Well I will have an up date in a few days. I am pursuing a more permanent fix that will handle larger windscreens at high speed. I will link a video when finished.
Best, Jon

I am going to guess that the original/factory design is probably fine for the life of the bike *IF* one only ever uses the factory windscreen and no topper. But a lot of us are using something larger or modified in some way (me included- I have an X-creen topper, which I love, but it is a significant amount of mass at the very top of the windscreen). Wind pressure is one major factor and the other is an extra mass which can greatly amplify bumps and jarring into the support structure.
-
I have always found the greatest stress on my windshield is when caught in turbulent conditions, such as passing a tractor- trailer and similar. It is the repeated 'slaps' of air hitting the windshield that breaks things, not a steady pressure.
Normally I reach up with my left hand and brace the windshield when moving around a truck as I know the buffeting is coming. Probably not the safest thing to do but then again getting hit with a loose windshield would not win any safety awards either so I choose to brace....
My windshield is ~10" taller than a stock Gen. 1 C-14 windshield and has not broken..... yet. :-)
