Hi guys & gals, well the rainy season has arrived, at least here in the PNW. :'(
I figured I'd create this thread now for my fall/winter project. ;)
As some of you know I've been hoarding a complete full 3rd set of ZG bodywork in my garage since last year, trying to decide on what color to have it painted... :-\
Well I think I've finally came to a decision, I'm going to have it done in 2013 ZX14R PASSION RED.
Now before the rocks start flying on how red is overplayed, I for one have never really been a fan of red, in fact over 25+ years of dozens of cars, trucks, and bikes I think I've only had one that was red.
If you haven't seen this color in person you really need to, it's quite stunning IMO and really pops! 8)
So I guess here we go again, happy reading over the next couple months, get yer popcorn ready...
Last week I ordered up another Corbin smuggler trunk, so I'm guessing in about a month from now when it arrives things get moving...

Somebody call Johnson City and reserve the lobby space.
I'm thinking a large extremely white fluffy mohair type area rug should be acquired to park it on.
-
Now don't take this wrong--I am kinda new here.
Boy--there's something wrong with you.
That's what my daddy woulda said.
Now hurry up and get the pictures posted.

Begs the Question, what color wheels are you going with?
I mean the gold is so, been there done that last year, right?
Back to slow, boring, disgustingly dirty looking, black no doubt?
...or....do you dare to try something proven, yet still BOLD?
Something that only you ZG, could possibly keep clean. Something like....classic yellow.

I like it, everything except that front fender.

I saw one of those read ZX14R's this last weekend. It was right next to a green one. They both looked NICE! My son was drooling all over the green one.
But if you do this, and it take a few hours to change color, black, green or red, it will be like a woman going out on the town... what to wear... what to wear?
-
Sometimes things just work out nicely, I'm feeling the good Lord is on my side with this paint project. :)
The shop "Artistic Auto Body" that does all my paint work put a team together to compete in the dragon boat races down on the Willamette river this past weekend for an event called "Row for the Cure" to raise money for a really great cause!
One thing they did over the past couple months was sell raffel tickets to raise money, then yesterday at the "row" they pulled the winning ticket...
Yep, guess who's ticket they pulled! ;D
My ticket was pulled and I won a $500 complete inside/outside auto detailing! 8)
I spoke with them today and instead of getting one of my vehicles detailed inside & out I'm just gonna use the $500 credit towards the labor costs associated with this paint project!! :)
Woohoo, this project just got a little cheaper!! ;D :chugbeer:
-
:yikes: It costs $500 to get a car detailed? I'm in the wrong f'n business.

It's a full monty deal GP, hand wax & buff paint, carpet shampoo, leather treatment, engine bay detail, wheel polish, etc.
I actually really should use it on my truck, I've had my truck for a dozen years and it's never had anything more than a couple car washes a year and maybe a vacuum once a year... :-\

Woohoo!! Looks like this project will be getting started sooner than I expected! :)

Ordered the smuggler trunk last week, it arrived today, typical great customer service and fast shipping from Corbin!

I have a suggestion---Eliminate the rack and handles, incorporate the tail light into the tail itself. Streamlined appearance and something unique.

Interesting concept but gonna have to pass Chet, mama needs her grab rails and I need the rear trunk mounted sometimes... :chugbeer:

And give me that Smuggler before you ruin it by painting some other god awful color like the green one. ;D

So I scored a set of "1400GTR" badges off ebay the other day, I'm thinking about running these with this set of bodywork instead of the "Concours14" badges on the sides of the tail panels... 8)

Has anyone done this? I don't use a top box or carry passengers and I swear everytime I look at that rack I think flat bed farm truck. ::)

So is your plan to have multiple sets of plastic in different colors so you can outrun cops, then change the color quickly so you don't get caught, or are you simply trying to match your shoes?
-
2 of dem pieces look familiar ;) Good for at least a %10 boost in performance, which will put ya just slightly above a parade pirate bike ;D

Not that I have seen. I have been toying with the idea a bit. I will also be doing what I can to shave weight. I just need to find some "spare" change so I can upgrade my suspension. What Jay is doing is awesome, I just want to go the performance route, make the ultimate naturally aspirated bags on sleeper. Work on more air in to match the TBs and lower weight (I am starting with me).
I think I will start a thread for ideas.

Sweet!
For your next set of body work, how about some of that color changing paint? You know, the stuff that changes color as your viewing angle changes?
Can you get your car into that garage? :o
-
You should go with a hyper color paint. That way, when you ride it in the summer it will be red and when you ride it in the winter (or when it rains) it will be black.
heat sensative nissan skyline r33 www.autokandy.com (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUGbV9Mp2gU#)
Honestly though, I think you should take a trip to a PPG or HOK store and look at all the color samples they have before picking a color from another Kawasaki year/model bike. If I had the money to repaint my entire bike, that's what I would do. There's no sense picking another Kawasaki color and having to pay outrageous prices for ColorRite paint when you can find MUCH MUCH nicer colors and better paint readily available from PPG or HOK. Not to mention, your bike will be one-off and not a clone of another year/model's color...

OK, responding here because it got a little.... pesky on that other place where this thread was also posted.
So Jay, I am thinking of two tone gray, light and darker, one above the other roughly along the line of the front fairing groove and the fuel tank's widest point. Saw it years ago on an '07 BMW and fell in love with the color scheme. But I really would like to know the type of paint being used on yours if you could casually find that information.

That 2-tone scheme sounds cool Brian, I thought about doing the same, the line I think would work well (for the 08/09) is the line than follows the tail side down all the way to the front of the lowers, ie tail sides and lowers one color and above that mids/tank/upper/mirrors in another. 8) I've even thought about just doing that with a mix of 2 color sets I have, black on one half and green or red on the other half... ?? :-\
As for the chem mix on contents within the paint probably the best folks to ask is Color-Rite, that's who we ordered the paint from. I bet if you contacted them and gave the codes I listed on that other forum and asked it in the way of a potential buyer they could probably give you better intel than I could, I'd probably screw up the big words in translation... ;) ;D
I'm stoked about yer paint project Brian, can't wait to hear/see more about it! :chugbeer:
-
Well, no project yet. It is just that my '08 is getting a little long in the tooth regarding paint- some on the overall fairing, more (but still slight) on the tank, more yet on the saddlebags and downright atrocious on the wheels. I know the wheels and body work are two completely different items and will probably try to do something with the wheels first because they really are pretty poor looking.
The bodywork would be nice but there are too many projects piling up in front of that. I cannot even get a trailer of wood moved for going into 'winter mode' 'cause the prime mover is down :-( And now it looks like I may have a large project on your side of the continent so that too will eat into available time.
And then there are all the.... stalled projects like the headlights. So I am reluctant to call painting the bike a project, more like a pipe dream at this point.
But I am watching yours with interest. Living vicariously through your chameleon modes.... :-)

Well I guess the good thing is winter is a great time for projects though eh Brian. :chugbeer:
Let me know if you want to take the easy path though brother, as I mentioned I still have my complete 09 oem black bodywork with tank and side case lids etc all boxed up in the garage that I'm thinking about selling, you could plug and play with this and be done in a day for a lot cheaper than painting yours... ;) :)

Thanks Jay but I think I will work with the parts I have -they will be off the bike anyway and it is going to take a while to prep and paint them anyway so it won't be a quick process. If I even forge ahead :-(

Of course you could mix a little green and red for Christmas. LOL!

Somebody call Johnson City and reserve the lobby space.
I'm thinking a large extremely white fluffy mohair type area rug should be acquired to park it on.
Man you are nuts in a very creative way, and I will furnish the rug and a cool one!!

OK, I'm calling excess here. You had BOTH front fenders done??? You have gone too far, too far I tell ya :)

thanks a lot. The worst thing about having you in the forum is the ideas you seed. I started toying with the idea of getting golden rims on my black C14. And it looks good in my mind. Ohhhh!!!! :banghead: There it goes my Xmas bonus. And I have all the winter to chew on it...

Ok, just picked up the last pieces with the badges from the painter and dropped them off at the shop, install should be completed by end of day today! :)
For the badges I went with a gloss black this time, I think the gloss black goes with the high gloss red quite nice! 8)
On the 1400GTR badges the centers of the letters and numbers got a little too filled in with the black, so tomorrow I'm gonna ride the bike over to the painter and they're gonna fill in the little spots on the centers of the letters and numbers with some of the red left over touch up paint.

Looks very nice Jay. Just curious why you added the rear bag guards?
-
About the only improvements I can see would be a stock shield with a black interior and the black rims. The shield just seems overly large, kinda like it's killing the sex appeal. Ever see a Duc with something that large?
I like this much much much better than the green ;D
-
NICE! What a sweet lift too

Ya, I added the MCE rears about a month ago when I had to lose my TB rear sliders because they're too long to use with the Pitt Bull stand.

My shield's not that tall, it's just raised all the way up in those pics as they were probably still tightening/adjusting everything from the install.
I'll get some better pics for ya bro! ;) ;D

Has anyone done this? I don't use a top box or carry passengers and I swear everytime I look at that rack I think flat bed farm truck. ::)
I was seriously considering eliminating the bars and rack, but then I got a Smuggler, so the unused rack doesn't look as bad anymore.

Thanks TJ! :chugbeer:

I took both MC bars off, front and rear. Plan on getting the TB's one day. Hopefully before it is too late. Look forward to the outside pics...

Nice pic Jay…….glad she was able to be with you guys! Happy Thanksgiving……..bike looks great.

Hold the train ZG.
You couldn't get your daughter a new set of matching socks ?
Come on man--new socks are only a couple of bucks. :)
The bike does look good in red.
-
Ya what's up with the socks?
Have a great turkey day brotha.
-
Maybe we should ask for donations to " the new sock fund ".
Tuition and paint jobs are pretty hard on the budget.
Or we could just pile on the criticism while he ain't looking. He's probably in the garage staring deeply into the new paint job. Probably got that " lost in space " look on his face.

Well in her defense, she goes to U of O so she's a Duck and has ton's of green swag, and she didn't even know I was doing a red set of bodywork until I took her out to the garage to see it, hence the pic... ;) ;D

Dang man--that red looks good,
I'm still not sure it's flashier than the green but it's growing on me.
Back to the socks--I believe there might be a " subliminal message " there.
Might just be her way of letting you know softly. :)

Looks real good! For some reason I feel a clear windscreen may look as good or better than the tinted one. Not sure though..Bike looks great!

Looks real good! For some reason I feel a clear windscreen may look as good or better than the tinted one. Not sure though..Bike looks great!
Thanks KG! :chugbeer:

Dang man--that red looks good,
I'm still not sure it's flashier than the green but it's growing on me.
Back to the socks--I believe there might be a " subliminal message " there.
Might just be her way of letting you know softly. :)

The reason I don't use/have a real camera is I like to be able and take some quick shots and immediately upload them to my photobucket without having to ever plug into a computer, easy peasy. :)

My Mylar guy has setup shop in my garage for the day, I'm having him wrap the entire front, mirrors, lowers, and side cases... 8)

Nope BZ, he starts with sheets and is custom cutting everything as he goes! 8)
He's got mad skills, I used him for the lower front on my green set too, but this time I'm going with a complete full monty wrap for the red set, very sano and invisible!
He's been at it for about 5 hours so far and is only about half way... I'm scared to see the bill at the end... :-\

Excuse my boldness as I am kinda new here but I have to know.
I'm wondering how many miles ZG has on his bike.
I mean real miles. As in excluding the ones going to the shop for paint--and the ones going to the shop for powdercoating--and the ones going to the shop for new front and rear suspension. And all the other miles accumulated due to all the other farkling.
Omitting those miles what do yall think ?
More than 500 ? ???
It does look good though. :)
-
Phoneman, Jay rides. For real. He is known for packing excess cleaning equipment tho :o
-
I'm just poking a little fun his way.
I'm not sure I could ride mine if it looked that good.
It would be kinda like having one of those 35 thousand dollar shotguns in the safe. You know what it's for but you really don't want to scratch it.

Well I don't put as many as others but I do alright, last year I put 8k miles on the Connie, and that's with having multiple bikes and living in the PNW, so not too bad IMO... :) :chugbeer:

Na, I've never even been intrigued about selling my 09 ABS for a 10+, my 09 has everything that I need and more, and the 10+ not only doesn't have everything mine has but it also has some things I don't want like linked brakes. Plus I really like the body lines of the 08/09 better, the way the lower follows the line of the tail just looks better IMO.

Well I really wanted the 1400GTR badges on the tail sides to look good, but even after painting the centers of the numbers and letters with red they still just didn't look great IMO... :-\ :(
So I ended up getting another set of Concours14 badges and had them painted in the gloss black, just got back from the painter, they heat gunned off the 1400GTR ones and applied the Concours14 ones. :)
I'm happy with these, they look much better IMO. ;D

This is like that game where you have to try to find the differences between 2 pics ... there's only 1 in these, tho. :)

Very subtle but I like it.

I think his next project should be a dark metallic gray. Blend the fastest (Silverdammit) with the slowest (Black) colors for the ultimate long distant touring rocket :)

I dunno, I think he's going in the right direction with these brighter colors. There are enough muted Concours colors out there, straight out of the factory, IMO.

Apparently not the red/green variety.
Or is he trying to compensate for it? Maybe all this time he thought he was making custom gray bikes?

Blacking out the gills is a huge improvement in the look of the red bike. It ties in the other black bits on the bike better and provides more depth. Of course that is in a 2 dimensional photo. On the actual bike you will get shadows and what not, but I still really like the blacked out gills.
ZG, you could do a vinyl wrap on the gills just to see if you like it, or plasti-dip?
