26K Valve Adjustment
« on: January 06, 2014, 05:14:05 PM »
7000 mi since last adjustment that was set at .006 intake/.008 exhaust. Clearances for exhaust were all .007 . Intakes were somewhat odd. #1 & #4 were .002 and #2 & #3 were .007 . Has anyone ever had any of their valve clearances grow? I'm not sure how to read intake measurements other than me screwing up the last adjustment. No matter, they're all back in spec. Carb sync is next.

There's a spot on the lobes - it's right where the grinder firsts rises from the base circle to the opening ramp - that will actually measure smaller than the base circle. if you measure clearance at the center of the base circle Vs at this slight undercut, you'll get about .001 difference in clearance. I'd be more worried about the .002 valves than the one that opened up slightly.
Intakes on #1 & #4 were the ones prone to tuliping on 86 C10s.

I don't know much about these GTRs .... (yet), but the valves on 900Rs often close up too, leading to starting problems and other issues if left too long without checking them.

All GPZ900s to 1986, the 85 & 86 GPZ1000RX and 86 ZGs suffered from tuliping but Kawasaki identified the problem and replaced with harder valves for the 87 onwards.
The difference between 6,000 mile valve checks should be less than .001" and once the motor has been broken fully (around 20k miles) should stay the same from one check to the next, if you set them correctly.

Tuliping was where the head of the valve would wear quite rapidly allowing the valve to recede into the head, thus closing up the gap.
