Engine slow to idle after rev
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:42:22 PM »
Here is a quick video of the issue I'm having. I have had the carbs off recently (my first time removing any carbs before). When I back off the throttle, the revs stay high for a long time. Besides taking off re-installing the carbs, it has a new air filter and I've removed the secondary air system. I have plugged up all the holes attendant with that job.

Here is the bike running. Sorry the audio is so crappy. It is loud. When rev'd, the engine seems very slow to lose RPMs. I checked the throttle at the carb and it is instantly going back to zero, so it is not mechanical as far as I know. Any ideas here?

First things first, check all fittings are secure and that all clips are in the correct position and tight, make sure the airbox rubbers are fully seated as they have a tendancy to nip in at the lower edge on the inner two carbs which is damned hard to see.

Check the throttle return cable is not tight, surprisingly enough if it's a little tight it will make the engine hang like it does on yours.

Check your carb synchronisation, you'll need some balancer guages, very easy job.

Usual rule of fault diagnosis, always go to the last thing you touched, in your case the carbs.

vacuum leaks at the manifolds or the pilot circuit is still partially obstructed. Steve

Did you clean them?

I thnk it's blocked pilot circuits. I've had my carb off for the same problem twice in the past year. The first time I don't think I got them spotless and the problem returned.

Below is a link to a Wiki on cleaning Ninja 250 carbs that are very similar to the ZG. I think that the copper wire cleaning the actual pilot jet was the key on my second teardown.

Unbeliveable how sweet she runs after the cleaning

Thank you for the piece on the Ninja carbs. I do have an experienced Connie hand coming by on Sunday morning to lend a hand. I am hoping that we can resolve this on Sunday.

It was total user error. I had the spark plug wires out of order off of the coils  ::) . Thanks for the help.

now that makes carb diagnosis a little difficult... :banghead:  Steve
