Speedo accuracy ??
« on: August 28, 2011, 08:13:40 AM »
I haven't had time yet to get a mount for my GPS for a comparison but my speedo seems to read a bit fast. My V-Strom is known to be about 10% fast, even had some guy making new Gage faces for them for awhile.
So, is the stock speedo fairly accurate?

Thanks, Matt

Yeah, the bike's speedo reads high. Some guys have gone as far as installing a speedo healer. I'm not sure why one would go through all that trouble and expense just to have your speedo read your true speed. It's not like you can't do the math in your head if you really need to know.

I can't do 4 and half in my head.  My brane will hurt.  I do 10 and divide by 2.  It's close enough.

Hmm, maybe you do need that speedo healer?

It's my opinion that bike manufactures factor in error on purpose. It seems like it's no trouble to get a car speedo accurate. My car tracks to me GPS to within 1MPH. My bike shows 5.

Mine read about 3 mph high at 60.  About 9 mph at an honest 154.  I have a '55 series rear tire on it now and it is about 1 mph off at 60, and about 5 mph off at actual 138 (fastest I've had it with that tire so far).

I assumed they wanted the speedo healer because they didn't want the extra mileage on the odometer.  A 10% fast reading would add 100 miles per 1000 on the odometer... (So a bike reading 11000 miles would actually only have 10000....etc etc etc)

My speedometer is about 5% optimistic.  But the odometer was spot on with the GPS when I checked it.

My speedo indicates 84-85 at a GPS 80. (I don't yet have a GPS of my own so I'm assuming that the error is a percentage and not a specific MPG.) That's close enough to 5% for me to calculate in my head. Would have been nice to know this morning when I was going "really fast".
