Bergmen's star spring "tool" question
« on: May 29, 2011, 09:59:11 PM »
On the old board Bergmen posted a picture of a tool he built to keep the clutch basket from rotating when removing the star spring nut.  I tried to make one from memory (and 1/8" aluminum) and the results were a twisted mess.  Anyone have any luck with it, or pics of how me made it work?  If all else fails, I will be hitting up the local moto-salvage to see if they have the "real" tool on Tuesday.  Thanks!

If I'm understanding your question correctly just make your own.

Get a hold of a spare clutch plate (the metal one) and weld a handle to it.
This is what worked for me untill I actually bought the tool from Yamaha  many decades ago.

Or you could get this:

Here are pics of mine:

It's out of 3/16" thick aluminum bludgeoned into shape with a BFH and bench vise.

Hope this helps.

That's where I went wrong, I grabbed 1/8" instead of 3/16".  Seems I could have also saved my money and bought the tool.  That's good to know.

Thanks!

Judging by the abuse marks on the pieces, I'm guessing "Big Freakin' Hammer"   :P

Close enough for a "G" rated forum.
