Title: I'm getting short!
Post by: Conrad on October 31, 2012, 08:41:28 AM
1 year left baby!

10/31/2013 12/31/2013 will be my last day of work before I retire on 11/1/2013 1/1/2014.   ;D   8)   :P

I'll be 55 and I'll have worked here for 30 years. That means that I will have reached my maximum pension benefits; 80% of my current salary at retirement with my health insurance paid for and a guaranteed cost of living raise of 3% annually, for the rest of my life! I won't have to pay state taxes any longer, no more paying into my pension fund (8%) no more paying into my 403b (12%).

edited my retirement date...

Sounds like you have a job with the state.  The only down side I see is that you'll be releying on one of the most screwed up states in the union.  I gotta admit that I'm a little envious though.  Hope you have a long healthy retirement when it gets here.

Thanks Red! That's mighty nice of you to say.    :chugbeer:

Yes, I work for the state. They already tried to screw it up for me, and others of course. I'll have to work a few months longer to reach my 80% because of their 'efforts'. Otherwise I would have retired in May 2013.

Congrats Conrad.
I'm envious.

I'm getting ready myself. Decided to give them a couple more years and see if there is a chance for a Golden handshake.
After that,,,, I'm gone.

Question though.
I went to a seminar and was told to retire "to" something, not From a job.
In my case I have antique cars and bikes that i intend to play with.....
Do you have something special that you are rertiring to?

Thanks!

Oh yeah! I have LOTS of stuff planed. Wood working, goofing off, wood carving, riding my bike more, donating my time to local causes, riding my bike, and I'll be a house husband till my wife gets to join me in retirement. And what ever else strikes my fancy. Maybe I'll even get time to clean out my garage.  ;)

4/23/15 for me, I'll be 54 y/o. 60% of my best 3 years, because of city silliness, my pension was set 5 years ago. I'll have to pay for all the other things though, retirees in Ohio don't get those breaks, it's not like we did anything important, we're overpaid to begin with according to our esteemed Guv and mayor. Local city Gov't for me, fire dept. Marking off the short timer calendar like me?

You knew it was coming, though.

Congrats Conrad. I've got 10 more to go and have 33 yrs in  But if the government has its way add another 12 to that. I want their job, can screw the country over and retire full pension, plus can work with no reprecussions to my pension. :o :shoot:

Snip...

Marking off the short timer calendar like me?

I just started today.  :)

I've been asked if I will come back to work as a 'consultant' after I retire. If I did this I'd be doing the same job that I'm doing now, for the same hourly wage on top of my pension amount. The only limitation is that I'd only be allowed to work 4 days a week. Oh that's rough.

Shoot, not for awhile. I have too much debt right now. At a minimum it will be 13 years from now. To be honest, I don't relish the thought of retiring and sitting around the house so I expect I might be around 70 before I retire, maybe older. I enjoy the work I do and the people I work with plus the intellectual stimulation.

Yep, me too.  I can 'retire' from IBM now but the pension isn't worth it.  It more than doubles if I wait until 65 so I'm working at least that long...unlike some people I know.  Sigh.

I'm a little jealous... pretty much!!! 61 years and still waiting for more six  till I reach a retirement. That's because I worked for myself for many time and entered to the state 19 years ago. Most of all, my son graduated recently and get  a residency program, so, I have to go to the office five-seven.

I like/love the work that I do and (most) of the people that I work with as well. But then I think about the fact that I can bring home more money while retired than working and I realize that I don't like my job THAT much. If I come back to work after retirement as a consultant, so much the better. I may do that till my wife retires in 5 years, or I may not. It all depends on how things go over the next year.

Ted, I know you posted this a year ago, but I just saw it.

I retired just under three years ago, and was concerned that I might get bored and would have to look for something to do.   Today, I find that I have less time than when I was working, but at least I am having a blast doing it.  I do travel a lot, but I also ride with other retired friends.  Secret to riding when retired,,,,it is a lot better riding during the week than the weekend.

I also tinker with the bikes a bunch.  Mostly repairing what I screwed up when I was tinkering.

Best decision I ever made was retiring.

Civil service, I work for the state. We don't pay Social Security; instead we pay into the state's retirement fund. I did pay into SS before I started this job and I am vested with SS. I may even get a lil money from SS on top of my pension, maybe $100/month.

Conrad, my Dad worked Civil Service for the Army National Guard. (To keep his Civil Service Job he had to be in the National Guard (warrant Officer). (40 years)

Like you, He paid into SS and then they changed the rules and had him pay (instead) into the Civil Service/State Retirement Fund.

Bottom line is, (because he paid into both) after he retired, he collected, Army (Reserve) Retirement, Civil Service, AND Social Security...

You may be in a similar situation...

Bah!  >:(
I'm almost 54 and worked for 28 years.
With the last reforms from our Goldman Sachs' employee (our PM Mario Monti) TODAY you need to have 42 years of work to retire.
This means that I cannot retire before I'm 67.
I said TODAY: the threshold will go farther as life expectation increases.
I doubt they will let me retire before I'm 70.
That wouldn't be much of a problem if I could count on a job until that date.
But I strongly doubt I'll keep my job until then: Companies get rid of older people first.
Moreover I also doubt that my Company will last more than few more years before it's merged/acquired with/by some other one and this usually accelerates the disposal of older people above...  ;) :(

Shortly (in very few years) I fear I'm going to face unemployment and believe me, here in Italy it's very hard (I'd say almost impossible) to find a new "regular" job for elderly people...

Two alternatives then:
- opening my own Company: about what?? not Consultancy because today Companies have to cut the costs and moreover they pay with years of delay (if not paying at all...). Perhaps the usual "Pizza shop"??? There are already too many and there's no room for new initiatives.
- emigrate. Find a Country where my experience can be appreciated or where my money savings can be multiplied by a low cost of life.

I know that when that time will come I'll find some kind of solution in order to reach the age of retirement with something to eat for me and my family but only time will tell.
Moreover, when I'll be allowed to retire, the monthly fee will be less than 50 % of my current salary.

I don't know why but I'm not feeling optimistic about my future...  :-[

Summing up: I envy you!!!!  >:(

I worked just over 10 years in SS, but I'm not counting on getting anything from it, even if it is $100/month. My plan was strictly my pension and whatever I put away on my own.  With that said, I should get a bit of a raise when I go as I won't be putting any money into a retirement fund or paying into a pension.
