Title: instrament panel loose?
Post by: red44 on August 13, 2011, 08:19:42 PM
Is there a shortcut or do I really have to remove the fairing to get to it? In rippled sections of road it's bouncing around pretty good.

1) Remove shield.

2) Remove the black inner upper dash cowling.

3) You may find it easier to also remove the black inner side cowling pieces.

4) Dash help in place from the backside with a couple of small bolts and rubber washers that may have compressed or rotted away.

Simple fix with at best 2 or 3 adult beverages.

During?  ;)

Once you get the cluster off the bike, remove the three nuts that hold the cluster to the metal sub-frame. You'll see each attach point in the sub-frame has a rubber donut surrounding a metal sleeve. Find a flat washer (I think 5/16"?) to fit *around* the sleeve. This washer will compress the rubber donut further, greatly eliminating the bounce that 'unadulterated' instrument clusters often exhibit when hitting the bumps.
