Title: rear shock fluid question
Post by: Pecker on August 12, 2011, 04:32:42 PM
I have read numerous things regarding shock fluid used to replace the old fluid in factory rear shock. I know Murphskits.com sells a "rear shock oil change kit" with some plastic beakers and also some fluid, but his website doesn't list what weight of fluid this is. Has anyone used this kit and if so, what weight and specs are the fluid? (their site only gives a viscosity index) Does it make the ride much stiffer than the OEM fluid? I shot them an email and waiting for a reply but figured I'd check here and see if anyone has any input. What other 10w or 15w "shock fluid" has anyone used? (not atf) who even makes a 10w "shock fluid"...(not fork oil)

Lots of folks make shock fluid.            I dont know what wt Murph sells right off.

I do know this, when you commence draining your Conc shock oil out thru the air vent hole,  prop it up on an angle so it can drain, and then leave it for a day or two.  It takes a long time to empty out.

I've seen some nasty looking stuff come out of shocks, same thing when i drained my old Conc shock== nasty looking.

The kit Murph sells is handy, and it works fine in my humble opinion.

Dang, just cant recall at this moment what wt oil it is.

Good luck to ye.

thanks for the link. Well, its official; I'm old.

Prior to this Concours my last bike was an `81 GS1000E, which I rebuilt entirely and rode as a daily driver until just a couple years back when my back gave out. There is so much new technology out there I am beginning to feel like a bit Amish.

If you bought it from Murph, rest assured it's correct.

I used ATF, seemed fine.

When I did mine I got about 8 ozs out of the rear shock. The oil Murph sells with his kit seemed to be a bit thinner than fork oil or ATF. I probably need to do mine again.
