I'm in the process of determining if the transmission has been damaged on a non-running bike and initially assumed it is because I cannot get it into any gear but 1st but while reviewing the manual I discovered this neutral finder mechanism thing. Is there a method of bypassing it?

I think you can pull the plugs, put it in low gear, and rotate the engine while rocking the engine from the rear wheel.

It won't shift up until you have sufficient rotation. I think that is tough on a non-running bike unless you roll it down a slope.

I tried that already, thought maybe a higher wheel speed was necessary to get it to shift. Tonight I'm dropping the engine and splitting cases.

. Yeah, my thoughts too. I found small chunks of metal grit stuck to the ignition pickups, so there's that.

I think you gotta spin the wheel in gear at at least 10-15mph to disengage the lockout.
What's the history of the bike? why do you think the trans may be shot?

The bike was advertised on Cycletrader by a large dealership in Iowa. The salesman stated it was brought in for overheating years ago. The radiator was replaced, no improvement, was put up for sale. It looked good from the photos but upon disassembly cracks and repairs found on the upper and lower fairing, baggage antlers broken, etc. Oil below sight glass. Found the coolant line going to the overflow bottle pinched between the head oil lines and block. Many other things like nasty wiringsplices for accessory lights and sawed off end of battery box tells a story.

Compressor was low at first, really low in cyl #2
100 90 110 115
After several soaks in WD40 and Seafoam it came up
120 115 120 120

Others have disputed my technique in the past, but here's what has worked for me:
Put bike on center stand.
Put transmission in 1st gear.
Rotate rear wheel by hand, normal direction, it will only go partial revolution and then stop. When that happens, move the shift pedal up, and ON MY BIKE, it will shift into second. Keep repeating this process and ON MY BIKE it will go through all the gears. Some have told me this is not possible, but it works ON MY BIKE. Yours may not. Worth a try.

Nosmo is describing how I think it can be done.. {he explained it better than I did}.
Only difference is, after ; {it will only go partial revolution and then stop} I was thinking hold the shifter up, and rock the wheel a bit to let it shift into the next gear.
This is similar to the process of shifting without a clutch.
ie; Shifting up without clutch;
While accelerating, hold the shifter up slightly and roll off the throttle.
The deceleration will unload the gears.
As the RPM's drop, the bike will smoothly shift up into the next gear.

Thanks guys for taking the time to answer. I gave up before checking here and am splitting the cases. Been working 56 hours/week and just neglected to recheck the forum.
