Ninja Fairings
« on: October 08, 2011, 06:36:04 PM »
Can I bolt a set of Ninja fairings onto a Connie? I think it would be a great set of summer clothes for Ellen.

You can do anything you want....... As long as you have the skill that is!

The Ninja Cowling will NOT fit without much alteration.

If you mean a Ninja 900 (Circa 1984) then the answer is yes it will fit.

You will need the fairing frame, which fits directly, the top fairing and headlight, blinkers, Clocks, etc all fit with no issues. (bear in mind you may have some reading issues with the clocks, but cannot say definately as the gearing of the speedo drive may be different to compensate for the different size wheel)
However you will either have to cut a small hole in the ninja fairing for the Rad top hose or change the rad for a 900 one.
If you want the full 900 fairing then you'll need the rad/oilcooler frame and rad too. You'll also need the steel bellypan tie bar that is bolted underneath the engine.  The nice thing is all mounting points are the same.

I'm actually in the process (funds permitting) of converting my spare GTR/Connie into a shaft driven Ninja 900 with full Ninja 1000R power.

A mock up pic is attached

Ooh! That is good info! I live in a place where the summers are so hot that people die. I don't appreciate the "weather protection" afforded by the full C10 fairings. I am used to unfaired, cruiser-standard type bikes. All that plastic makes me sweat, man! There's a guy down the road from me with an old, cherry Ninja, and I was riding by his house the other day thinking, man... I wish I had that little bit of plastic.... Once the initial work was done, do you think it would be feasible to swap them back and forth for winter/summer riding?

Sweet pics, BTW.

speedo gearing and everything else gagewise is plug and play, wheels are the same on both bikes... no problem, but you must pull/snip the wire from one of the instrument harness' that controls the kickstand light IIRC, it's wire / connection to the conni harness side will make the light stay on, that wire is used for the clock on the Conni, IIRC it is a white wire on the Ninja harness side.
as for fairing attachment I cannot verify, I looked into it when building COGZilla, but never followed thru.

As you will be changing only the fairing and fairing frames, then of course you'll not be changing the wheel so the wheel will be the same (but for reference the 900 uses a 16" front and 18" rear from 1984-1989 and a 17" front and 18" rear from 1990-2003).

The GTR clocks will not fit a 900r fairing frame as they use different mounting points and the GTR clocks are much bigger!  The wiring and plugs are the same for both sets of clocks, so a set of 900 clocks will plug straight in. (Man of Blues is right about the side stand light though, so a suitable mod will have to be made).

Once you've done the conversion, it's really a case of how much you do as to whether it will be easy to swap back and forth. If you go the route of only swapping over the top fairing and leaving it semi naked then other than making the cutout for the rad top hose, it's straightforward and pretty easy so summer/ winter changes will be a cinque. If you go the full fairing route and change both fairing frame and rad/rad frame then it will still not be a major headache but will involve swapping rads etc.

Just for info purposes the GPZ900R was sold in the UK from 1984-1996 so there are plenty more examples there than over the pond, spares abound on fleabay, but plastics are getting hard to come by, so a good alternative is a fibreglass replacement (very few people make replacement fairings for the 900 now) one company that makes replacement fibreglass fairings for a lot of older machines is skidmarx in the UK. prices are erm reasonable. There are also numerous specialist parts and tuning manufacturers in Japan, basically they have it all.

So, I can't keep the gauges that are on it now?

if you mean can you use the Ninja gages as they are, answer is yes...but as I say, you will need to pull the white/yellow wire from the conni side connector (the big one with 8 wires) that connects to the gage harness, or snip the white (I think) wire on the Ninja gage side of the connector that mates to the existing conni one.  the rest is plug and play.
you didn't mention what year Conni, if it is a pre 94, the Conni's emergency lighting (headlight)circuit will still function, just letting you know.
