Title: C10 dies when in gear and clutch released
Post by: Bob Young on April 22, 2012, 03:36:33 PM
C10 starts; idles well; pull clutch in,select first gear, just barely move clutch lever, engine dies. (Side stand up). Kawasaki Service Manual, Clymer's Manual. Both seem to point to starter lockout switch, engine stop switch, side stand switch, neutral switch. Could J box be a source? Any thoughts or previous experience would be appreciated.

TIA,

Your side stand switch is stuck in. Put the bike on the centerstand. Locate the switch at the pivot point of the side stand. The plunger on the switch should pop out when the side stand is in the up position. Take some WD-40 and spray it on the plunger and push the switch in and out. This will usually free up the switch. I had to do this every now and then with my '90. HTH

Agreed, side stand switch.

Thanks for the replys and suggestions. Anyone ever removed the side stand switch? It seems to be buried in behind the left muffler and head pipe. Any easier way to remove/replace switch?

Thanks again,

SUCCESS!! Thanks to all of your suggestions; indeed it was the side stand switch. Used an offset screwdriver to remove screws at switch; pryed open the small rubber seal and inserted WD40 nozzle and sprayed it well two or three times; each time working the plunger in and out. Test with a VOM, tested ok, replaced on bike, everything worked as it should; test ride, returned to shop without incident.
Bow to go ride,

Thanks again all,
