Need Help...Traveling Armed
« on: July 03, 2011, 03:21:30 PM »
i'm in texas and going to toronto. only problem is my pistol. i got my route thru cc states. i was thinking, what to do with it before i cross the border. do bus stations still have rent lockers or is there someplace else that does? only other thing i can think of is meeting a member that lives in say flint that could hold it for me. any ideas / suggestions?

Contact the border crossing (Canada side) where you'll be going.  Assuming you're using the same crossing to come back.

I don't know if it is different because I am a peace officer, but I was allowed to turn my handgun in at the border, and they secured it for me until my return.  (Zip tied the slide, placed in a sealed evidence bag, and secured in a locker)  A tip:  Have it UNLOADED before you get to the crossing.  (They didn't tell me this, and it was more complicated than it should have been - still simple, but would have been simpler.)  I held onto the ammunition and magazines.  This was back in 2004, so things may have changed.

Although leaving it with someone here in the U.S. would obviously be even easier.  (Sorry, can't help, I'm in NY)

THAT was my first thoought also...heheheh

I would explore making contact well prior to your trip, with New York State Troopers, and as if they can make arrangements for you to place it in thier hands safely to hold, and upon return hand it back over to you. Not knowing for sure myself, but you should check them anyway before entering New York with a CC in the first place, I believe they are as tough as Canada in those matters.....

I'd leave it at home.  You already see the problems posed trying to store it before crossing into Canada... some states won't honor your CHL, so they aren't going to store it either.  I would guess the only reason the LEO's pistol was stored... he was a LEO.

Leave it at home.

I'd say unless you are competing with that pistol, which is sounds like you are NOT, I'm not all that sure as a civilian you would even be allowed to take it over the border much less have it on you while in NY state. NRA has an excellent site for state to state laws. But from what I've heard from folks who had tried, rifles are bad enough, forget pistols. Good luck, as some have said, maybe its changed a bit, but Canada really does not like U.S. citizens taking firearms, legal firearms, into their country, ESPECIALLY pistols for any reason.

not going isn't an option. mom died. the last brother is in canada. i ain't going thru any states that DON'T reciprocate the carry conceal with texas. canada is a no go on pistols. only a dyed in the wool idiot would try to carry over the border. that's why i was looking for suggestions on where to store it HERE in the states and NOT at home. I ALWAYS CARRY. this just happens to be my first ride over the border. i will call border patrol and see if i can store it with them. thanks outback_jon

I'll store your pistol in Cleveland. I'd be surprised if NY had reciprocity with TX, that means that if you were taking I-90 to Niagara, you'd only be in PA for about 40 miles or so. Seriously, if you go through Cleveland, I'll store your firearms.

I for sure didnt mean to come across as sounding insensitive, and I too offer my sincere condolences. I know how you feel about carrying, I am always packing when I ride. Maybe start a thread asking for any site members in the travel area, that may offer up their service for holding your gun? I am in Columbus Ohio, I would be more than happy to help you out or meet you farther North if needed?

I'm sorry to hear about your mom GPZ...

I'm in Northern Illinois, ~60 miles west of Chicago. I could hold your pistol for you if you can head through this area on your way north.
