Truthfully, I have NEVER even considered the mechanism.  I just ride it.  I KNOW I ridden through some pretty fierce storms that were pretty heavy with headwinds.  I just go.  Never thought about it...

 I Never give it a thought. Usually, during heavy storms with a headwind, I raise the windshield for more protection. By the way I have a Cee Baileys Ultra tour.

Judging by the amount of movement on my Vstream it appears to move more on cross winds when in the up posistion.  Unless I am going under 40-50 mph, I don't touch the windshield.

I have had my cut down stocker on for about two months now and the funny thing is that haven't thought about my mechanism being weak since I can't see any unwanted movement since it doesn't catch hardly any air compared to my Vstream.

I leave it alone

Turn around and go the opposite direction, put it all the way up and lay on the tank, you'll get 50+ mpg...

That sounds like the best idea. After experimenting with a couple of barn doors I use the stock windscreen exclusively. In Winter I switch to my CalSci.

When riding at speed (85), feel the backpressure that builds by putting your hand on the center of the screen.  I am sure Kawasaki and other aftermarket guys design them this way to keep as much pressure off the mechanism.  But, I certainly wouldn't recommend triple digits with your barn door all the way up!

I've done triple digits with the shield up. Doesn't seem to bother it much.

It's there to be used, so I use it. One of the features I love, so I don't baby it.

I generally don't care much going right into a headwind.  Its crosswinds that bug me and force me to play with the height more.  I bought the V-stream not to block the wind, but to provide clean wind (no buffeting) to my face/helmet.  I usually leave it all the way down and only raise it a bit when crosswinds force my head side to side.
