If you have a Sena SMH-10 Bluetooth headset you might be interested in this. The original SMH-10's had a round charging port/jack, weren't firmware-upgradeable and could only link to 4 other Bluetooth devices. The newer SMH-10's have a micro-USB connection for charging & firmware updates, and can (theoretically, at least) link to an unlimited number of Bluetooth devices. If you have the older model, Sena has an upgrade available until August 31 (http://www.senabluetooth.com/contact/notice_20110620_1.php) for $49. The upgrade kit consists of a new main unit, micro-USB type cigarette charger and micro-USB cable. There are 2 ways to do the upgrade:
1. Order the upgrade kit and send them your unit; when they get it they'll ship out the upgrade kit
2. Order the upgrade kit and let them put a hold on $100 from your plastic-money; when you get the new one, ship your old one to them and they'll release the $100 when they get it.
The ordering page for the upgrade kit is here (http://www.buysenabluetooth.com/smh10/smh10-upgrade-kit.html). I just ordered mine; I'll update this thread when I get the new one.
-
Gee Willikers! Thanks! :goodpost:
Just ordered two kits....
-
I'll have to remember to do this in three weeks after I get back from my 10 day excursion.
-
Thanks for the info.
-
Got mine today! firmware upgradeable....so far I like them. We'll see tomorrow

Did they come with a new helmet baseplate or was it just the unit itself?
-
You just exchange the main unit and charging cables.
-
there was a baseplate however I didn't use it. I rode with it today, AWESOME!!!! Bluetooth phone (iphone) worked flawlessly, and I plugged my Ipod into it as well, great sound was cruising 80-90 mph with no problems in an Icon Airframe. My Black 2011 just got even faster with tunes!!!
I have to give them another shout out: REVZILLA did it again $299 for the DUAL Setup with free shipping, ordered Monday afternoon, was there yesterday when I got home. TWO DAYS and SHIPPING INCLUDED / NO TAX!
UNBEATABLE!!!!
-
Just ordered my upgrade and sent back my old unit. Thanks for posting!!!
-
Hmmmm... I sent back one of my old (bought in April!!!) units because the charging female port broke free from the circuit board. I wish I'd know they had the upgrade option. Of course, it would have been nice to have the NEW units when I got them in April!
-
I just ordered my dual kit from radioryder today. $300 plus it includes a separate bluetooth transmitter that'll work with my old non bluetooth itouch. Look forward to getting it next week

That is interesting! That is one of the main reasons I upgraded my units. I think I was one of the first to purchase dual set from Sena, so mine were way out of warranty. Mine didn't completely break from the circuit board, but were going in that direction. I had to support the charging cable just so, to get it to charge. I'm sure it would have broken soon enough.

Did you get the forum discount?
-
I did'nt bother with the discount. I needed the transmitter anyhow and ordered the setup via ebay. The transmitter runs about $35 anyhow and it was still free shipping. Besides I gave up waiting for a response from them. Sent email and left messages but never heard a word back. Maybe they will read this and give me a deal:)
-
What address do you send the unit(s) back to and do you need some sort of authorization to do it?
-
Sena Technologies, Inc.
Attn: SMH10 Upgrade Promotion
3150 Almaden Expressway #238
San Jose, CA 95118
Send a copy of your email confirmation with the old units.
-
Tanks.
-
The Sena folks aren't very communicative but they do what they say. Sent my old units in last week (just the heads, nothing else). They arrived this past Saturday. Got the credit memo yesterday. Thoroughly impressed with them, I must say.
Going to make this sticky for the duration of the offer...
-
Now I have to wonder if they are going to charge for the firmware upgrade for the new units to actually work like the old ones did.
-
I guess we'll see...

Not sure I follow you here. Are you saying the new units don't work like the old ones did? In a negative sort of way?
-
According to their site, there should be a firmware update coming out this month. Other than that, they should be up to date.
-
For those that did receive the upgrade, are they working just as good or even better than the old units?
-
I haven't tried mine yet...sounds like a project for Friday.
-

Mine works better, no buzzing when I use the earbuds. The sound seems louder but it may just be me but they do claim a sound booster but no way to turn it off or on, it is just there. Overall I am happy with the upgrade
-
Not sure I follow you here. Are you saying the new units don't work like the old ones did? In a negative sort of way?
That's what I'm saying. The intercom seems to work ok, but my phone is now useless with the "upgrade"
-
I'm so pissed. I just ordered my set from Amazon and what do I get, the older model.
Now I have to shell out another $49 to get current.
Now I just hope I can get the new kit soon since I leave on the 21st for my two up ride.
-
Crap, San Jose? I probably could have driven down there and traded them out. Crapper.
-
Just used the upgraded unit today. Had to reacquaint the blue tooth connection with my phone. Didn't want to use the old one. Must be a new code or they are unique to the head unit. Plugged my mp3 player into it as well. Works fine so far. More testing tomorrow.
-
Mine is working fine as well...deleted old pairing and re-paired with nuvi just in case.
-
Received my upgraded SMH-10 and it works great. The sound seems to be MUCH better, which may be partially due to the new headset/boom microphone attachment I ordered with it. The mic is far more sturdy and beefier than the previous unit, and the speakers seem a bit larger. In any event, they sound is very, very good. I also put some foam padding behind the speakers, effectively pushing them closer to my ears, which has the effect of making the speakers louder and clearer, and also helps block out wind noise when I'm not using the speakers. It does make putting the helmet on a little trickier, but I've adjusted and it's not a problem.

That's not a bad idea, putting foam behind the speakers. I'll do that one.

I used that packing foam they shipped the Sena in. :)

1. Download Updater
2. Connect SMH-10
3. Install Updater
4. When the updater says to, turn on the SMH-10 to install the driver
5. Run the updater
6. Click "F/W Update"; the updater will open a location to store it
7. When the updater says to, hold down the Phone button
8. When the updater says to, hold down the phone & jog buttons
That's it; update complete. There's an interesting button labelled "Device Settings" in the updater; one of the choices is "EDR" (extended dynamic range?). I wonder what shutting that off does, and I wonder if Sena will be able to offer a way to set priority based on individual devices? Hmmm...
-
Got my replacement units in today. Probably because I think it will be better, but I swear there is more volume than before.
-
Got my replacements, returned me original units, and got my refund deposit the same day they recieved them.

I believe there is, it's one of the improvements. I got my refund the same day they received my old unit also.
-
Trying to order a set today...and says it is in backorder... :(
Was wanting to send my old unit back first since money is a bit tight. But seems I will have to pay the deposit as I do not want to be without them.
-
FYI.....the program necessary to download in order to update the firmware is for Windows only.
If you only have a Mac, like me, you're SOL. I didn't know that when I made the upgrade. Dude I spoke to at Sena was very nice but not very positive about a Mac version coming out any time soon. Stoopid Mac. I bought into the kool-aid and have regretted it ever since.
-
As far as I know the program has ended. Hope everyone using this headset got their upgrades.
-
If you have the software-upgradeable version of the SMH-10 (the "B" model, with a mini-USB port for charging instead of a coaxial one) there's an update available to firmware version 3.2. Everything you need is here:
Sena support page (http://www.senabluetooth.com/support/download_document.php)
I think you also need version 1.1 of the updater, which is on that page too.
-
We've got a thread devoted to that and I'm moving this post there...
I just updated mine to 3.1 a few days ago. Must have just missed it.
Thanks for bringing that to our attention.
-
Just updated mine to 3.2 .....
-
I actually got mine from Amazon yesterday and loaded the update last night. For those with a Mac, I did mine on the Mac via Parallels with XP installed.
-
I tried the update but after going through the process it says that I still have 3.1..oh well

D'oh! Sorry about that. The sad part is, I actually thought about where to post this...

Thinking will always get you into trouble. It does me.

You need to have 1.1.1 of the installer sw in order for 3.2 to show up correctly.
Go to the Sena support page to download it and install...

Thanks Jim, I'm in business now.
-
It's really strange. I have two sets and the other one did fine on the old software....
-
Firmware 3.3 is available now as well as a new installer (1.2). I'm sure you'll need both.

Darn website isn't recognizing my email addy. Sent a note to support. It was registered as of June of this year.
Re-registered...couldn't wait for support to fix it. Downloaded the firmware and all went well on the first unit. Doing the second unit it wanted to download the image again. The manager software (latest) did not like that one bit....get it...bit.....anyway I had to delete the first download and let it download again and it was happy. Two units at 3.3 now.

It did the same to my login email, too lazy to reregister but I will eventually >:(
-
I re-registered and had the same issue, I just re installed the image and all went well. Here is a step by step even though it is 1.1

Hey all, a question on upgrading the units.
I just received my headsets yesterday (12/30/2011), and can't get them to connect to the PC :(
They shipped Monday, maybe they are already upgraded, but I cant check.
I've registered at the website, downloaded the 1.2 installer, tried both usb cables and both units,,,no joy.
Deleted and reloaded the installer, rebooted the system, turned firewalls off/on, I'm baffled.
Did the factory reset on one unit, tried multiple usb ports, same, same.
Running Windows XP Pro, I don't have another pc to try with just yet, will have to try one at work ifthat is the only option.
I looked for the 1.1 installer, but could not find it.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
-
If it installed correctly you should have a program folder named Sena Technologies with the SMH10 Manager sub-folder. In that folder is the program SMH10 Manager. You should be able to select that to bring up the manager program. If those aren't there it won't work.....I think. You may have an installation issue.
-
Thanks
The install appears to been fine. I have those folders and tried executing the manager from the folder and the desktop shortcut.
I get the message to connect the headset, red LED, turn on the headset, click OK. When I click OK I get the "SMH10 is not connected to the PC" in the SENA manager with the firmware and device settings options. Of course, clicking onthe F/W or device setting buttons does nothing.
Hopefully Rocket Moto where I got it from will be in tomorrow, I'll give them a call.
-
Or contact Sena Support direct....

-
Good point, will go that route also if need be.
Adam at Rocket Moto was very helpful when I ordered, so I'll holler at him first.
-
try going to the devise thru your control panel or use a different port. i hav had troubles like that and solved it bu going through the control panel if i recall correctly. my computer was not recognizing the device. tech support also advised to check the drivers. good luck
-
ALL GOOD!
Thanks for the control panel tip.
Found the Bluetooth device installer and I needed to install a driver from the SENA programs folder.
Big slap to the forehead.....duhhhh
Could have installed the driver from the SMH10 folder, but just blew through it. So we installed the driver, all updated now,,,woo hoo
-
Wanted to say THANKS to Sena. Had an earlier model of the SMH-10 headset that was about a year old and it wouldn't stay synched with the BlackBerry via bluetooth. Send the unit back to Sena and they returned a new and upgraded SMH-10B (USB) headset with no questions asked. Great unit, terrific customer service from Sena.
-
Sena has released the SMH-10B update code version 4.0. Along with that it has also updated the 'Update Manager' software. Unpredictable results will occur if you don't update the updater software. Just updated both the manager software and the firmware on mine. Download the update manager first and get that installed then update your first unit. As an FYI, when it asks you if you want to update another unit, say yes, but don't download the image again. It will fail. You need to use the image that it downloaded previously.
http://www.senabluetooth.com/support/download_document.php (http://www.senabluetooth.com/support/download_document.php)
You will need to be registered on their site in order to get the updated code....

I updated our units a couple of days ago as well as the SR10, went smoothly. I tried it out last night and worked as it should in the garage. I am heading to north GA tomorrow and will see how it does. I run my radar and GPS 660 into a Mixit2 and have that wired into the SR10 so now I am wireless. I don't really care about having the phone connected. After I did the upgrade I did do a factory reset on both headsets and the SR10 to start fresh.
-
For those that aren't aware of the MIXIT2 capabilities, here is the website...
http://www.mixitproducts.com/ (http://www.mixitproducts.com/)
-
Folks, do you need to do serial updates to 4.0, or just download the 4.0 update?
-
Good question. I would think that as long as you are using the most current updater then you would be ok. I haven't heard of anyone bringing that up in the Sena forums.
-
Jim, thanks for your reply. I believe that to be the case, as well. Guess I'll try it and see what happens. Has anyone downloaded to Vista, 32 bit, system?
-
Vista....yucky doodle. Mine is W7 64bit..no problems.
-
Follow up to my last post: Sena doesn't recommend and does not support Vista in any bit flavor for the 4.0 download. Also, 4.0 is cumulative so no worries if you have less than code 3.xx currently.
-
Thanks for the update on the code. Too bad you have Vista...

Just to be clear, the only way I can use a radar detector with the Sena unit is to buy a Mixit also? I don't really care to use my phone while riding, but wouldn't mind plugging in my iPod and possibly a GPS.
-
If you have Vista you can just choose the Windows XP version and it will work fine with Vista.
-
finally got it after about 3 hrs yesterday and today . Nothing was happening til I turned my wireless mouse and keyboard off . Did not occur to me they were wireless . Once i did that the download was no problem . Thanks for leading me in the right direction folks
-
I guess the lack of the cables weren't clue enough? Just kidding. ;) I've seen issues with USB ports that defy description. So what did you do? Remove the wireless USB thingy and then it saw the device?
-
I just updated to the latest (4.1) software. I have Vista and used the 64 bit windows 7 software manager, it worked fine.
-
Note to everyone.... 4.1.1 was out August 1st. I missed that one. Beta 4.2 was out this Jan 22nd. I'm still on 4.1 so I'll update to 4.1.1. Maybe I'll go to 4.2. Always remember to download the latest installer as well.
Looks like they are providing support for Windows 8 users....

Thanks for the info. I don't know what version I have but I bought it in November and it does have the micro usb port. It works fantastic for bike to bike as well as phone and Bluetooth music to my Droid. Far, FAR better then the bluant F4 it replaced. Not sure I want to mess with something that works great, but I'm a sucker for software updates.

+1

Thanks for moving my post to this thread Jim. I hadn't seen it since I was on a ship. I got the email a few days back but just installed it tonight. In my not so great living room testing while wearing my ear plugs it seems a bit better. I need to ride but won't be able for a few days at least. I hope when I get back from my trip the next two days, it won't be too icy out.
-
I updated a friend's last night, haven't done mine yet. He had 4.0, and it insisted on upgrading to 4.1.1 first, then went to 4.2. Not sure if I screwed it up or not, but it said "Current version 4.0, newest version 4.1.1". I just wanted 4.2. Maybe when I do mine, I will get smarter about the whole thing.
-
Possibly. How is your track record on these sorts of things? ;)
-
Possibly. How is your track record on these sorts of things? ;)
In general, poor. Yet I still try. Dumb enough to do things badly, too stubborn to not continue, a bad combination.

Now if they can have an upgrade for the DroidX to increase touchscreen sensitivity so I can use it in my Aquabox. Now I have to upgrade my phone.
Stereo bluetooth Rocks!
