Odometer stopped working
« on: August 16, 2012, 11:14:43 PM »
Last night when I pulled into my driveway my speed odometer was working. Got on bike today and it is not working. Also the minute timer on the tach stopped working. I'm thinking cable broke. Is there anything else that could cause this? Odometer stays on 0.
Thanks for any help.

Yup, check your speedo cable.

I found a cheap basin wrench a few years back it works pert darn good for tightening the top nut. Just pivot the head 90* and get'r done

I took the cable off at the wheel and the cable is broke about 2 inches from the wheel. Thanks for your help.

I couldnt get to the end at the gauge, hand just wouldnt fit. That's a great idea about the basin wrench. i have one somewhere just have to find it. Have not seen it in years...

Thats easy...Just pretend that you DONT need it and look around for something else.  That is  the only sure-fire way to find a tool.  Cause if you need it you are not going to find it.

Take a look at how it's routed. If I remember right, I didn't run mine back through the loop that's attached to the LH side of the fender. I think I ran it straighter out from the wheel. Seems to me it looked like it would bind a little where it broke.

I always seem to find my tools within a week of purchasing the replacement tool.  I'll have to try your method as it appears to be cheaper more frugal.

+1 on checking how the cable is routed. I have busted a cable on my 02 and 86. I removed them from the loop and knock on wood; havent busted one since. I also 'cheated' on my first cable. It broke down by the speedo drive. I just pulled it out of the sheath and slipped the new cable back in.

Yep even on my Carbon Fiber fender I drilled it for the black plastic follower as I did not want to risk having the cable mar up a high $$$ fender.... Yes my speedo cable is made of braided SS like the brake lines.

I love my bike........

I don't think I use that one for the speedo either just the brake lines....
