Title: Coil pack conversation components
Post by: Chrome Megaphone on April 18, 2021, 06:59:18 AM
Since no one that I'm aware of is offering the coil pack conversion can someone clue me in on how to diy?  A parts list and diagram should do it.  Asking before buying new stock coils and wires, the project is nearing completion.

I don't have that information, but the coils should be fine. You can ohm them out to test them.
DO replace the wires and caps though. {Murph's}

Thanks for the input.  That was my plan but since the bike is a '86 I hesitate to rely on such old coils.  If just one fails its tow truck time from who knows where.

I'm sure it's happened somewhere, but I've never heard of a failed C10 coil in nearly 28 years of ownership and being on the COG Listserver/forum, ZGGTR forum, and several Facebook groups.
Even the igniters are pretty bullet proof.
J-boxes are the electrical thing most likely to let ya down.

Can anyone help out here?
I quite like the idea of stick coils, just to update stuff! 😂

This is one of the best upgrades I did for the concours, but I kinda regret doing it with lack of current support. The harness seems easy enough, and the coils seem easy enough, but I dont think I've ever looked behind the schematics of the whole idea. I love having a nice clean top of the motor since I did the stick coils, and the reed valve deletes.

Here's the link when T was selling the kits.  I think that's what you are talking about.  You could always pm or email him for info and if he's in a good mood he might respond...or not.

i mean, if he isnt selling them any more, its not a hard conversion to do, at all if you have any wiring skillset.

From memory you can use ZX9R stick coils with the OEM igniter.
Just wire them in series so 1-4 & 2-3 fire together.
This is from memory though. I haven't done it.

I've always figured doing that just adds a couple more possible failure points .
