Sloppy clutch lever
« on: December 06, 2012, 11:18:38 AM »
My clutch lever is really sloppy at the pivot. I haven't disassembled it for inspection yet so I'm not sure what's causing the slop. The brake lever is not as bad but it is noticable. Just wondering if any one has improved this area in an effective way.

Are you referring to up and down or fore and aft? If up and down the pivot bushings are worn.

that would be up/down. Can they be re-bushed without destroying them?

Never had to do it but I would imagine bushings are available and are easily pressed out/in.
I know if I'm wrong someone will quickly jump in to correct me.  ;D

Thanks Cholla. Looks like I'll have some more medicine for cabin fever this winter.

the oilite bronze bushing is pressed in, and not a common size (the o.d).
by the time you get the closest size, machine it to fit, and install it, you might as well have bought the replacement lever....they are not expensive.

Throw them and fit new ones.
Be warned that some of the cheap ones out there are cheap,.... as in crap.
I've had a couple of sets that the adjuster fell out of.

Pre-94 ones are NOT adjustable, but ya can fit post-94 ones to pre-94s.
The levers are standard and fit a whole raft of Kawasakis (ZX6, 9, 11 for starters) as well as the C10.

replacement seems to be the easier and softer way. I like to tinker but I don't like to to any more work than I have to.

I replaced that bushing on mine and it wasn't pressed in other than by my fingers. Works like a champ now. Seems like the stealer charged me 9.00 for it. Good luck.

I pressed mine out easily and pressed the same ones back in , I just rotated the worn part to a different location (180 I think) and no more slop.

They are in a box now since I had later upgraded to fancy looking Pazzo knockoffs from FleaBay.

The bushing is available from the dealer?

How did you get it out? I tried last night and could not even get it tapping on a socket with a hammer. I think mine may have become one with the lever. Any hints at getting it out are greatly appreciated.

Hi Dan, mine just slipped right out. It rotated freely in there. I pressed the new one in with my fingers. I had worn a hole all the way through the old one. That caused some big time slop.

Thanks for the reply. I will mess with it some more (probably til I destroy it  ;D), and then I will have to replace it. How are you taking to Texas? Missing Michigan yet?

Hey Dan, I'm a Texas boy so it's good to be home. I'm not going to miss the cold up there at all. It got up to 75 here yesterday so I was out on the bike. She's glad to be back down here as well. I did enjoy those few times I went over to Motorcycle Church there in Grand Rapids. That was  a good time. If you ever make it down this way look me up.

Good luck with that bushing. I'm trying to remember if a replacement lever comes with the bushing installed. The levers aren't very expensive.

I've replaced numerous levers on the conni
all had the bushing installed when purchased
None had a bushing I could push out, with fingers or moderate pressure
(light hammer taps)

if you could press the bushing out by hand, it wasn't a factory (i.e. OEM Kaw) lever......just commenting here. YMMV ;)

Mine was probably just plain wore out. The plunger had worn a hole all the way through the bushing and the clutch lever. I replaced the bushing first but later replaced the lever.
