Cam chain guides
« on: May 25, 2015, 07:57:34 AM »
I'm looking to find out what is normal wear on my cam chain guides.  I've got what look like grooves worn into the chain side surfaces of my front and rear chain guides.  They seem very even and the outside edges of that surface are about 1/32" thick and 1/32" higher than the surface where the chain rides.  It looks very much like a channel where the chain should ride.

Can anyone tell me if this is the way they come stock?  Or are the channel's worn out of what was a flat surface when stock?

Thanks  Joe C

iirc, the oem as delivered, is relieved by grooves on the edges, so I don't think a replacement is immediatly needed, if the wear in the middle is not excessive, I think you are good to go.. might want to question SISF about this, as he has disassembled numerous ZG engines, and seen a few more sliders than myself.
he might be able to assist, also REVRIDER might have some input, as he has pulled his apart many times.. and prolly very familiar with the slider.

got a pic? I have yet to see one I felt needed to be replaced, even some really high mileage ones. Steve

After looking a little more it does look like the chain side outside edges are supposed to be there as side guides. (I think)

Thanks for the help and conformation on the guides guy's.

After many hours I was able to get the cylinders over the pistons, and my knees and fingers are starting to not hurt to much, so I'll be able to continue reassembling after work tomorrow.
