Anyone have first hand experience with one? I'm looking at something that will be around in 20 yrs, roomy 4door, sporty, and gets great gas mileage. I got an internet quote of 22300 plus TTL. Any and all comments appreciated, this would be by far the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased.

You might want to look at some of the Passat/ VW forums, also consumer Reports. Look at the average cost of maintenance for 5 years or so.
If you have a Dealer Locally, see if you can talk to a Senior Tech about the car.
TDI was known for having a cylinder head issue. The High pressure fuel rail runs through the head, to the injectors. This actually Ate away the Head, causing replacement on earlier models. Also Volkswagen is German for Electrical Repair. Get some info on the specific model/ year/ engine/ trans, etc.
-
What Motor Head suggested plus ask about the decoke costs as well. Oil changes will have you using specific VW spec oil and it doesn't like extended intervals either.
There were some TDI fuel problems where the whole FI system had to be replaced including the fuel tank and VW was denying warranty claims as they said poor fuel was to blame.
If you have a really good independent VW shop close by then you will be able to keep it on the road for a little less but in the next 20 years you will get to know the VW parts counter guys real well along with the shop techs.
Long term cars that people want to keep usually have a Toyota or a Honda badge and don't have a diesel in them either......Your experience may vary....

I am a VW fan especially the TDI group but they are Audis now and aren't near as self serviceable as somewhat recent models..................love the driving --hate the weird VW problems.
2002 Audi A6 ....great tourer.
2004 VW R32.....just great.
2008 Kawasaki C-14..are ya kidding?

Everyone I have meet loves their VW especially TDI , here in Australia you can also get Skoda which is VW by another name . They will last 20 plus years without much problems on the same engine remember 20 years should be about 250-400,000 MILES not many petrol cars that give great fuel economy will make that . My friend just bought another Skoda TDI and the Maximun service price is limited to $220 because it's diesel ,try getting a new car dealer to do that on a petrol car .He has by the way given the old one to his daughter he only replaced it because of tax reasons .I am looking at them seriously as well .

What year? Passat stopped TDI back in 05 or 06 I think.
I had a 2003 TDI Golf and loved it. It used Castrol Syntec Oil every 10,000 miles as manual suggests. I run it 125,000 with no problems like my other cars. I put glowplugs in at 100,000 miles at around $300. It should get a new timing belt every 100,000 miles. Mine was a 1.9 L and I got 43 mpg all the time at 50mph or 100mph. The standards get better fuel economy and feel faster
Try "Freds TDI Page" It is very imformative.
For $22,000 you can get close to a new Jetta or Golf Diesel. Not sure if the Passat you mentioned is new.
-
It will be the 2012 2.0 TDI. I'm gonna do some more research, almost feels like I'm cheating on this forum though 8)

Hey Pappy!
I don't mean to turn you off but the VW forums are generally pretty liberal...
I'm a diesel Dubber. 1890 VW Caddy (the pickup) with a transplanted 1.6td.
That era was analog everything. There are about 5 wires going to my engine and thats the way I like it. 45 mpg. And I brew my own Bio-d so it doesn't get any cheaper than that.
For you I would recommend a Toureg.
Ya' know, in case you need to defend yourself...
Now as far as the newer era...
Long term cars that people want to keep usually have a Toyota or a Honda badge and don't have a diesel in them either......Your experience may vary....
My other car is my second 91 Honda Accord, and I'll probably buy a third when this one is done. Put gas in it and change the brake pads every so often and you'll get to 300,000mi.
-
If that Toureg was in Neutron Silver and that was a Browning up top I may be interested ;) I eat libs for breakfast ;D
Still trying to dig up some dirt on the 2012 2.0 TDI.
-
31-43 mpg on the 2012. It has a 2.0. Base sticker is $25,995. Loaded can get you half way through the $30Ks. Looked very nice.
-
I'd skip on the VW and go buy a Honda Accord if you want something to give you good mileage and be around in 20 years.
-
Das Auto is Das junk IMHO.......at least compared to the other automakers in terms of overall reliability.
-
I'm in the automobile towing business and can tell you, that all German cars have many electrical/electronic issues.
For that reason, my wife wasn't allowed ;) to buy VW Jetta Wagon TDI and had to settle for Honda CR-V.....FYI
-
So far the only dirt I've found on the new 2.0 TDI is an assumption that the High PressureFuel Pump wasn't upgraded, which in the past has been an issue (maybe as many failures as KIPASS :o), a fuel gauge that may or may not work correctly, and that some of the earlier models didnt come with a rear passenger heat/cooling tubes (technical term). So far the best bit of info has come from this forum. I do wonder what I'd get from a BMW forum? If I were to measure my RT experience to this Passat I would shy away, never had an issue with that bike (other than maintenance costs, which ultimately led to its departure). I will take a test drive to see what they are like when they are at their best, but I'm gonna wait a coupla years before I jump. I know I want a TDI type car, great mileage and torque, not interested in a Prius, that bank of batteries will be expensive to replace and I just don't like the looks. I sure wish there were more diesel choices in a sedan sized car :(
-
Motor Trend loves the new Passat it swept a 3 car comparison (2.5, VR6, TDI) vs the camry and another car I can't recall. If I were in the market for a new four door it would definitely be a TDI.
I rented an Audi A3 with the 2.0 TDI and an A6 with the 3.0 TDI in Germany and they were both great cars with awesome torque. The A6 could cruise at 150 all day. And not even break a sweat.

I may have never agreed with you so much before. ??? Mercedes has a few diesel options as well of course and I believe Jeep is putting one in the new Grand Cherokee (3.0litre).
-
Be thankfull you are in the USA they are about $44,000 downunder, yes another way we are screwed !!!
-
Going to lunch with my friend Greg in his TDI Jetta headed west on the 202.
Speedo says 90mph, instant economy gauge says 42mpg.
Yeah buddy!
I would get a manual if it was me though. The autos are hard to service. Plus my left foot gets bored...
-
I have had 6 VWs and have never had an electrical issue, unless you count the bad insulation on my 1971 Superbeetle that caused a short in my ignition back in 1983. I have had very few issues, non electrical and none that you could attribute to something other than normal wear and tear. I had to replace wheel bearing on my Jetta at 140,000, oh, and I had a syncro replaced under warranty at 99,000 miles.
All cars were high mileage. My last one was a 1995 Jetta with the 2.0 gas engine. I had 189,000 trouble free miles on it. The body looked great, interior looked great and the engine had good compression on all cylinders. I changed the oil at around 5,000 miles though sometimes I went over that. The car consistently got 34 MPG on the highway and 28 in town. I would have kept it had some idiot not have rear ended me. I decided to move to something else instead of fixing it. I still got $3600 out of it as it was.
I would not hesitate to get the TDI, it is a great engine. The only reason I don't have one is that I have reached a point that I don't really want to pay $25,000+ for a car anymore. I have gone back to basics. If I were to buy a car for that much money or more, I would want an engine that would last, and the TDI can.
-
No first hand knowledge, but I've heard that when you have to completely replace the entire fuel system, the bill is in the 10G neighborhood. Can anyone confirm/deny?

The High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) seems to be the one big issue, when it grenades it sends metal bits throughout the system, injectors, lines, both pumps, and tank. VW replaces everything to insure all particles are removed. It hasnt really been determined if it is a faulty design or the low sulfar diesel. There is a service bulletin out to add a dampner to the end of each injector line and it appears that there is a new design and part number for the HPFP. We test drove both the Passat and Jetta TDI, I think we will go with the Jetta, our sticking point is which package to go with, I want the loaded version which is about 25k out the door, the base is about 2k less. We are not planning on buying anything untill January so I will continue to look for dirt on this car.
Oh, the test drive was great, plenty of get up and go, lots of room, front and back, quiet, comfy, and a huge trunk.
We haven't made any final decisions and will continue to shop all brands, but, I really like the torque of the TDI as well as the economy and distance per tank. All things worked together, the only real advantage of a diesel is the torque and life expectancy of the engine. Things like AdBlue (inline required additive every 15k or so) and intitial price of engine really balance out the fuel savings. The DSG tranny was awesome, I tried the sport mode, standard mode, and of course the manual shift mode. If my wife wasn't there I really think I'd be a 2012 Jetta TDI owner today. At %1.9 financing it makes it fairly affordable.
-
So, major news, I like dealing around the end of the month, I'm getting .9% financing, trading in my '06 Chevy Colorado 4X4. My out the door price for the fully loaded TDI will be a tad over $16k. Should have it in the driveway by Thursday ;D And, it's the gray one, no way would I get the slower black or red ;) I cant wait to put my Nobama sticker in the rear window and my "Drill baby drill" sticker next to it :stirpot:
Oh, I forgot to add something of extreme importance, 'specially to wflsteve------it has a fob!!! Push button start, keyless entry, fob never needs to leave your pocket :) Just think, a fob in each pocket, betcha I turn into quite the ladies man. Doesn't hurt to dream, sighhhhh.
-
Jetta or Passat?
-
Jetta! I wonder which will get more miles next year, my 14, the KLR, or the Jetta? Im thinking the 14 hands down, should be twice what the car gets, and the KLR? It should get a few thou, lots of dirt to visit ;D

I really want a TDI sportwagen! But was just able to make the buyout payment on my grandfathers 2010 Accord EX-L lease (only 4100 mile), so I'll have to wait.
This is my first Honda, and am waiting to pass judgement till I can get more miles, but I don't see what all the hype is about with Honda's!
-
I'll be in the market for a new car real soon and I was looking at the TDI Sportwagen myself. Consumer Reports sure likes it.
-
I had a 1978 Rabbit Diesel. Absolutely no power. You could pretty much put a brick on the gas pedal on the highway for cruise control. Max speed about 80. But the good news was it would get 57 mpg in town or flat out on the highway and any combination. I took the spare tire out of the well in the back and put an aftermarket 10 gal fuel tank in that well. With a total of 20 gal I had over 1000 mile range.

I still carried the spare, just had to lay it in the back instead of in the nice well under the back deck.

So..... I ended up with the slower colored black one! I will have it home tomorow. As loaded as they come. Got the extended warranty and get this 0% financing. I also got the xzilon coating and window tint. I figure if the HPFP grenades it'l happen before 100000 miles. At 0% I don't know how I could go wrong.

Enjoy it! Surprising how much power you feel in it. Not too many people can appreciate TDIs.

There, fixed it for ya.
After living in Germany I saw the benefits of turbo diesel passenger cars that the US has ignored for the most part. My neighbor got 50+ mpg in his Skoda and it was average, there are quite a few small TDI cars that could get 55-60 mpg.

Yep, back in '94 we rented a diesel Peugeot, non turboed, ran from Grobbendonk Belgium (3 tours, 2 in Germany, 1 in Belgium) to Frankfurt and back, same tank of diesel, average speed for the round trip-120mph. It was silver BTW. Back in the mid 70s my mother owned a little Golf Rabbit, it averaged 50 mpg, little 4 speed that just wouldnt die. My old 86 F250 is diesel, absolute beast, gets almost as good a mileage as my (well, not anymore) 5 cylinder Colorado. So, I converted along time ago, just never could find one I could afford/was willing to buy. Heck, if I could find a reasonable conversion for my KLR I'd be all over it. When I really retire, I'll have an F350 turboed dually and a nice 5th wheel toyhauler big enough to haul the 14, KLR, YZ, and the wifes quad. Lots of folk around the nation I'd like to meet and twisties I'd like to ride.
Someday, soon I hope, America will really wake up and see the virtues of a well built diesel car, it seems the younger gen. is all caught up in horse power, most of them cant even spell torque, much less understand the value.
The last time I was this pumped was when I got my 14 brand spanking new, if this car provides half as many smiles it'll be a keeper for sure ;D
-
Chet,
You about have me sold on the TDI. I was going to wait till next year to buy but now I'm not so sure. What's the deal on the 0%? They had one on the lot that you liked eh?

This seems to be getting closer to reality... Chevy is releasing the Cruze with a TDI engine for 2013. http://www.autoblog.com/2011/07/22/diesel-chevrolet-cruze-coming-to-u-s-in-2013/ (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/07/22/diesel-chevrolet-cruze-coming-to-u-s-in-2013/)

The 0% was something new, the level depends on credit score-mine is a lowly 796, wife squeeked out a 832. We/she really wanted a gray (WINK) one, I really liked the white/gold metalic for visibility. They had 2 nav package TDIs left on the lot, red and black, I couldnt see myself living in the Prius lane, so I opted for the slightly quicker black. I started the entire process through the internet, compared prices without a phone call, exchanged ideas, and I made the first call. The lady we worked with was really a good sales lady, she fully understands the rules of reciprocity, so it was kinda fun swapping debts so to speak. I also told her up front I was looking to buy around January and that I prefered to swap emails, that we would contact her when we were ready. I'l post up tonight how the ride drive home is, I won't have my speed reduction factor with me 8)
I bet the cruze will far out sell the volt, but, I wonder how many will remember the bailout. I know I will never buy a new Chevy, besides, I really am a fan of Ford. I have the memory of an elephant, I still wont buy fuel from an Exxon station.

I was at the VW site this morn and built my TDI sportwagen. I didn't see anything about factory tint or xzilon coating (what this?) or extended warranty. What's the cost of those 'extras'?

The coating is a dealer option, 'sposed to never need waxing, kinda like a shiny teflon for cars, the extended warranty will extend out to 100000 miles, bumper to bumper, they threw in the tint for free, well, no additional charge. All said and done the extras were a tad over $2k, cheap piece of mind and at the 0% rate, I felt I couldnt go wrong. I also opted for the 5 year vs the 6 year, I'll do 20k miles no sweat, so why pay for the 6th year when it wouldnt matter. I would caution ya, don't take one for a test drive unless you're ready to buy, it really is a nice ride. Did I mention all the hotties who were in for services? Very well decorated waiting area ;D

Tint would be nice, ext warranty I'll get but any dealer applied coatings, of any kind, I'll pass on.

Have you guys looked at the new Mazda technology? Interesting.

Not sure what they are doing to meet their claims? If it is new technology I would hesitate until the bugs have been worked out, one thing they mention is weight reduction, which all by itself will help, along with aero.
I was worried that maybe I jumped too soon ;D

Sounds like things we been doing to our cars for years, better/lighter piston, higher compression, weight loss, efficient exhaust, and direct injection. I think it will sell rather well, it should lend itself to reflash power gains and new owners wont be dropping big bucks on power adders.

I'm amazed at the numbers they're claiming for reduced friction in the engine and power train.

If Mazda hooks the US up with the Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine on an AWD CX-5 model, I would be all over that. 300+ lb-ft of torque!

I would like to have that motor in my wife's CX-9, the 3.7 gas motor in it now only gets 17 city and 20 (if we are lucky) on the interstate.

Got second hand experience. A running friend (female, math teacher and to answer the forthcoming question, YES she's hot!) bought a new Passat about 2 years ago. She had to use the Lemon Law to get the dealer to fix the many problems she had (bought new) and finally it reached a point where they paid her off and took back the car.
So 20 years . . . I dunno.
I have no more details on what exactly went wrong to cause all the drama. She drives a Prius now.

I'd bet is was the HPFP, it aounds like some of the dealers were trying to shift blame on water in the fuel or people accidently pumping gas into the tank. The issue has been well documented and is being looked at by outside (read fed gov) sources. It is the biggest reason I bought the extended warranty. It is a gamble, but what fun would life be without risks every know and then?
-
I lemon lawed 3 cars(so far). 2 used and 1 new.
The new one was a 2006 midnight blue Dodge Charger RT. I loved the car,but they couldn't get a rear wobble out of it. They tried from 4,000 miles until 20,000 miles to get it to stop and couldn't fix it. I got my money back and they got their car back. I had to pay s :'(ome $$$ for miles, but not much.
2 cars later I got a 2007 Chrysler 300C. It was the nicest car I ever owned. Drove it for a couple years with no issues at all. It is essentialy the same car. So you.never know they are all different.
Enjoy your new ride. You are going to love it.

A BIIIIGGGG warning about filling the tank.
A friend at work bought Jetta TDI (it was within a year, maybe 2011 or 2012 model).
Supposedly, other cars have provisions so you can not insert a gasoline filler into the gas tank (diesel and gasolin fillers have different radiuses). His TDI did not have it. It was within a few months of getting the car. He put gasoline into the tank out of habit :) He ended up paying $10k+ on a new car to replace all the fuel injectors, etc. All the money he was going to save on diesel went away.
Check your car, if it doesn't have it, there is a small plastic thingy that you can insert into the gas tank and it will prevent you from putting gasoline into it. I would ask the dealer to cover it (<$100).
He was saying VW is the only car that doesn't have this by default.
-
Thanks for the tip atilla, I am worried the wife may put some gas in it, I'll be looking in the morning for sure. From what I read gas doesn't habe the lub that the pumps need, another reason why water in the tank is bad for diesels. Regardless, I will probably fill er more than my wife, BUT, I will do something to be a very visible way to remember.
Scaf, I hear ya, I AM a little worried, but I am taking the same chance regardless of what I buy, and since it has a fob similar to KIPASS I should be OK 8)
So, the drive home was really nice, got the phone all syned up, calls are as clear or clearer, streaming bluetooth (Metallica of course) was awesome, sat radio was as expected, I am still learning where everything is. Driving the car beats my expectations, at 2500 the turbo starts kicking in and the things pulls like, well, a big diesel. The tranny is a big bonus, when at a light the tranny disengages so the twin clutches aren't burning up, I tried the sport mode, but rush hour traffic was around, and it is the last day of the month, LEOs were plentifull. The Tiptronic will take some getting used to, redline comes far quicker so I am going to need to adjust my shifting to match, but in all honesty, I think I will be in D most of the time, other then when I hit some of my fav roads. I am already missing my truck, kinda sucks, I just had the head and the exhaust manifold replaced, drove it home from the dealer, took all my crap out, and rushed to the VW dealer. It was like a new truck. Oh well, it was the slowest color red.
So, anyone have any recomendations on a chip? Farkeling this car is going to be rough, wife would kill ,e if I added a CB, maybe I'll get a good portable, best LEO sniffer out there, hands down. I haven't figured out where the key hoes yet, maybe the glove box?
So, bottom line from the first day? I like it, comfortable, quiet, great economy, decent power, and looks great. I think I may surprise my wife with a trip to Leavenworth to do a little shopping European style ;D
I can't wait till I am granted access to the TDI forum, I dont see any tire threads or oil threads, so I will be leading off asking if anyone has run a set of MC tires and which synthetic oil is the best :yikes:
-
When I had my 03 TDI I was looking into Rocket Chips and I think the other one was Absolute Chips. They could reprogram the ECU pretty easy as well. Check out Freds TDI Page. I think all the upgrades had 3 stages to them too, depending on your mods(exhaust, intake, injector size, and ecu. Good luck!
-
Chet,
Where's the pics? You got the Jetta TDI with the DSG tranny right? (your title says Passat, fix it! lol )
I'm trying to imagine what that plastic filler thingy that Atilla mentioned looks like. I know that my diesel Silverado's fuel filler (dieselhole) would take any size fuel pump nozzle but I've never ever come close to putting gas in it by accident. I've heard horror stories about folks who have though.
-
I had a 1978 Rabbit Diesel. Absolutely no power. You could pretty much put a brick on the gas pedal on the highway for cruise control. Max speed about 80.
Yep, the original 1.5 naturally-aspirated, probably with a 4 speed manual? Best money I ever spent on my Dub was when I went to the 5 speed.
VW went to the 1.6 in '81, added the turbo in '85ish, and finally in the early '90's Canada and Europe started getting a 1.9td ,still with the same bolt pattern, that can be tuned up to 280 horses!
Course you sacrifice a little gas millage, But that would be almost as much fun as the Hayabussa-Smart car!
smart car with Hayabusa engine at 200mph (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSM_Xiw0F3U#)
And you'd still get better gas mileage than 3/4 of the cages on the road!
-
The last time I was this pumped was when I got my 14 brand spanking new, if this car provides half as many smiles it'll be a keeper for sure ;D
I had a 01 Jetta VR6. Great performance, but had it in the shop all of the time. Car wasn't dependable until about 90Kmiles. Just about replaced the whole damn thing by that time. Drove it until it was 11 years old and 160k miles. The last 70K were real enjoyable, but it was the shts before that.
I've always wanted one with the TDI. Have a friend that bought one a few years ago and he has had nothing but pure bliss from it.
-
I love your intro into Freds TDI page. Tires and oil. lol.
PR3s of course was a great response.

They are quite a bit more timid over there, I'm kinda watching to see how they operate with a bonifide smart ass. I think I may lose a few followers once I post up picks with my "Drill baby drill" sticker and an "I love Glen Beck" 8)

Hey Chet, does that Jetta come with a factory installed electric engine heater?
I'll have to look, it is something I will need once I live on the dry side of the state ;)
-
Nope, no block heater, non even mentioned in the manual. I'm really liking this car, filled up 260 miles ago, she just dropped to 5/8 of a tank, showing an average of 43.8. Most of the miles have been back country, maybe a third has been freeway. Still learning all the functions and features. I will be making a complaint, I found/heard a small screw rolling around in the glove box, yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would a big screw be better?

Uh, no, well, I guess it's all a matter of perspective ;) We talking about the act or actor? ;D

Chet,
I'm about to take the plunge and talk to a dealer about buying a TDI Sportwagen. I was wondering about your buying experience/strategy. I know that you took advantage of the 0% financing (it's still available till the end of the year). Were you able to get them to come down off the list price while still being able to get the 0%? In the past when buying a new car I always came prepared with financing from my credit union along with the invoice price for the car and all the options that I wanted. I just gave the salesman my list and told him how much over the invoice price I was willing to pay. If the salesman gave me crap about the invoice price not being right, or for any other reason, I turned around and walked out and went to another dealer. The 0% would be great but not if they're gonna make me pay the sticker price to get it.

Be sure to check Truecar.com before talking to a dealer. It gives you all the sales data in your area, so you know what cars have been selling for. You can also get quotes from multiple dealer.

Thanks Chris, you can't have too much info! There's a VW dealer fairly close to me but they don't have any Sportwagens on the lot. I'm fine with ordering and waiting to get what I want but I at least want to be able to test drive one first. Closer to Chicago there are lots of dealers with Sportwagens on the lot but none of them seem to have the exact combo of colors and options that I want.
I went to truecar as you suggested. I found three dealers somewhat near me who will sell me the car for, what the site claims, dealer invoice.
-
I paid under invoice, went through the 'net. My experience was really quite nice, I was prepared to do battle but I never needed to. I went the route of the extended warranty because I felt it was the right thing to do, for me and the dealer. If not for the %0 I would have stayed with the standard warranty and skipped the extra xzyline and tinted windows. My bottom line is really simple, would I refer the saleslady to anyone? Yes, her name is CindyLu at the Tacoma Look Larson dealer. I'll gladly share her number if anyone is interested.
So, I hit 300 miles before the gauge registered half. I should hit 600 before I need to fill er up, and very little of that was highway miles. The book shows something like a thousand miles before she is broke in. I think I will really realize the best economy once I get 3 tanks of diesel through her. Something neat I noticed today, each fob logs it's own economy data, I think I'll challenge my wife to see who does better ;D

I'll be going with the extended warranty too, so far I have yet to see pricing on this though. In looking a bit more at the percentage rates, it's 0% on '11's and 0.9% on the '12's.
As for break in., from what I'm reading on the TDI site it's more than a 1,000 miles. http://forums.tdiclub.com/ (http://forums.tdiclub.com/)
My Silverado has the same deal with separate economy data/fobs, driver one and driver two. It even keeps track of what radio station each driver had on last along with how the doors are programmed to lock/unlock along with a few other items, mirror/seat position...
-
I'll recheck the book on break in, not that it really matters, I aint gonna be hot rodding it. I do know that I got a '12 at the %0 rate. About the only thing I didn't get was the 3M film, I was going to but SWMBO wasn't interested. I also went with the 5 year, 100,000 mile extended, cheaper then the 6 year, 100,000 mile, I'll be over the 100k limit by the 5 year mark so I figured I would keep the spare change for the tank. I didnt know the fons would also help with the presets. I wonder if her fob will take control of the radio when we are together 8)
Have you taken a test drive yet? I'd sure like to hear your opinion.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the extended 5 year/100K warranty cost you? I'd prolly opt for the 6 year because I doubt that with 2 other vehicles and Connie in the line up that I'd do 100k in 5 years.
No, I haven't taken a test drive, heck, I haven't even seen a JSW in person yet. I'll remedy that situation within the next week or so though. I'll post back once I get behind the wheel and let you know what my thoughts are.
Good question about who's fob will take control. Since you have the wireless/push to start option I'd guess whoever has fob number 1? On my Silverado it's whoever uses their fob to unlock the doors.

Break-in info from the TDI club. (I know nothing about Jetta TDI's, just passing this along)
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=464223 (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=464223)
Rules that apply for the life of the car
-When the engine is cold (below the first 3 white marks at the base of the temp gage) rev the engine to at least 2,500 rpms.
-When the engine is warmed up (above the first three white marks) Rev the engine to no less than 3,000 rpms.
The reason for this is to keep the turbo on boost, clear the VNT guide vanes and apply firm pressure to the rings for optimal sealing against blow-by gasses. The rings need the boost to seal since its a turbo charged engine, babying the engine is detrimental and will lead to issues with compression if done so for very long.
First 1,000 miles
Keep rpms below 3,800. Avoid steady rpms. Frequent firm application of power is strongly recomended up to 3,800 rpm. Avoid the use of cruise control so that you naturally fluctuate the power with your foot.
1,000-5,000 miles
Use the full 5,100 rpm power range. Avoid steady rpms. Avoid the use of cruise control. Frequent application of full throttle is recomended to help seat the rings. City driving is ideal for breaking in a TDI due to frequent stops and acceleration. Once you get to 5,000 miles change the oil and perform your first service per the manual
5,000-10,000 miles
Use of the cruise control is ok at this point since most of the initial break in has occured. Continue to use occasional full throttle accelerations to continue to seat the rings. You will notice the engine become slightly louder during this phase due to less friction from the engine breaking in (normal for a diesel to become louder under lighter loads). If your going on a long drive and you are using the cruise, every so often step on the peddle to accelerate up about 20 mph then coast back down to your preset speed.
10,000-60,000
This is when the rest of the break in occurs. The engine from the factory will check out with about 475psi of compression pressure out of the crate. It will take at least 60,000 miles to reach the peak pressure of 550psi. For the most part once you get to 10,000 miles your compression will be around 510psi meaning that most of the break in has occured.
60,000-the life of the motor
The engines I have seen so far using a 5w40 oil are maintaining 550 psi of compression pressure with over 200,000 miles on the odometer. The owners have followed the advice above and do not have any oil consumption issues. This also means that with the higher pressure the engine is more efficient returning optimal fuel economy and reduced smoke output.

It was packaged with the xzyline coating, it was in the neighborhood of 2k. Have you done the internet request? My wife had been shopping for a few months and some of the net salespeople were quite demanding, but CindyLu wasn't, she felt quite genuine, a big reason why we didn't buy from the dealership 10 minutes away. I had informed her through emails what I was looking for and asked for a best price up front. The base price I paid for the TDI, w/nav package was 25,500. Sticker on the car was 29,900. Before trade in, with the ext. warranty, TT&L, and coating OTD was 30 and change. I got 105000 trade in on an 06 Colorado.
Oh, I got the %0 on a 2012, I wonder if end of the month volume sales helped? I do know from recruiting that MEPS was always more eager to work and deal then they were say mid month.
I am kinda missing my truck though. I have a great wife, she is looking for an F350 diesel, turbo of course ;D
Wow, way differant that what the book calls for. Some similarities like varrying RPMs, but the car (2012 anyway) doesn't have a temp gauge. First checkup is due at 6k miles, then every 10 after that. Since the first 4 services are covered I will be doing them as required. They say oil change intervals are 10,000 miles, Holy cow, I think I'll be staying at 5-6k for changes once the contract is up. Probably overkill, but it will make me feel better. I may even do an oil change early, I've seen what comes out of a new engine after a hundred miles, I dont think I want to keep that stuff in there for 6k miles. It comes with full synthetic, so natuarally it will stay that way.
-
Yes, I did the internet request from Truecar.com. I got back 4 replies and they all will sell me the car I want at invoice. 2 of the 4 have my attention, their replies seemed very personable. I've been quoted a price of $28,685 for a '12 JSW w/DSG, sunroof, body side moldings, roof spoiler, and the protection kit (TDI floor mats, trunk protector, and mud flaps) I'll just need to add the ext warranty.
This a HUGE difference from when I bought my last new car. It was almost like pulling teeth to get the invoice price deal. I walked out on 2 dealers in the process.
Have you done much reading at the TDI club site I mentioned above? The guys who seem to know what they're talking about are VERY adamant about NOT changing the oil before 5k. Check this thread out, http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=428452 (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=428452)
I know that everyone has an opinion about oil changes but it makes sense what's being said at that site.
-
High quality modern diesel engines do not have the need for freqent oil changes .Tollerances are much tighter , diesel oils are MUCH better than 20 years ago,Oil filtration and circulating is much better than years ago , fuel injection cut of the fuel first so there is no chance of fuel leaking past rings to contaminate the engine oil , diesel fuel dose have a better lubrication property than gasoline . THe design is for long lasting engines so bearing etc are bigger /stronger .They will happly run for 500,000 miles so at 20,000 miles a year thats 25 years of use . My Mercedes sprinter 5cylinder turbo calls for oil changes about every 12,000miles but a lot of people run them for 20,000 plus miles . Mine holds 9.5 litres of oil so check the capacity of your VW .
-
My old 2003 had oil changes every 10000 miles as requested in the manual. It might be different in the newer car books.

I'm about thisclose to pulling the trigger on a '12 JSW TDI DSG w/sunroof & navigation. I just got off the phone with a dealer in Chicago. They have one coming from the port and it's exactly what I want. He'll sell it to me for $500 UNDER invoice. I can't go this weekend but I'll be taking a drive to Chicago next weekend and taking a test drive of one they have on the lot. If I like it, I'll be signing the papers then and waiting for my new car.
BTW, I got the fastest color. Silverdammit!

You can carry more beer that way... We can at least drive around the house a few times. Never driven a new VW or diesel for that matter. Maybe Conrad should be worried?

We can make a beer and pizza run in the veedub Jim.
Hard to carry pizza on the bike.

Hey Chet,
I wanted to ask you about that extended warranty you bought for your Jetta. Is that a VW thing or some 3rd party? I've been looking for info on this but can't seem to find it. I forgot to ask my salesman about it.

I'll need to look, but I'm pretty sure it's through VW.
-
I'm full of questions, sorry. :P
With the keyless entry/push button start, how is the warming of the glowplugs handled? On my truck, you turn the key to on and when the glowplug light turns off it's safe to start.
-
What I have found the smoothest for me is as I get in I touch the button, then seat belt, foot on brake and push button again, starts really quick. If I buckle up and the start it took a coupla seconds before she cranked over, I'd guess it was the glow plugs warming up. If you forget to put your foot on the brake pushing the button a second time shuts everything off. I do know the glow plugs are a heck of a lot quicker then my F250. We are leaving today for our property in E WA, 2 passes to travel through so I will see how well the traction control works, as well as see how good the mileage will be, I will do as much hyper mileage as I can. I'll check on that ext. warranty as soon as I can. And BTW, keep them questions coming, aint no sweat off my brow :)

So it's a 3rd party warranty endorsed by VW? When I asked my salesman about it he said that once I speak with the finance person at the dealership that I would have all my questions answered. That made me a lil nervous. :o

I thought it a lil strange that VW doesn't offer an engine heater on the TDI. My truck came with a heater and back when I used it more in the cold months I connected up a timer and had the heater turned on a couple of hours before I needed the truck. It may have been overkill since the truck was in a garage though.

Chet,
Way back in this thread Boomer mentioned looking into the decoking cost for the TDI. I had no idea what that was, I think that I do now though.
Check this out.
http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-7.html#j (http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-7.html#j)
Avoiding the Need for Intake Manifold Cleaning - Recalibrating the EGR System - this vehicle is equipped with a CCV (crankcase vent) system and an EGR (exhaust gas recirculating) system. Oily fumes from the CCV system can combine with carbon particles from the EGR system to form a black sticky tar in the intake system. This eventually starts restricting the amount of airflow into the engine, resulting in gradual power loss as the vehicle ages and the intake clogging becomes worse. In rare cases a MIL ("check engine" light) may be tripped, with an intake manifold pressure control code set, but normally this does not happen and no codes are set. Operating conditions, fuel quality, oil quality, driving habits, and general condition of the engine all have some effect on how long the intake system survives before clogging up. It can be prevented and this recalibration is highly recommended for all TDI owners.
A VW specific scan tool such as VAG-COM is required for this procedure. With the engine warmed up and running at idle in neutral with all major accessories such as air conditioning turned off, connect the scan tool cable and start the scan tool software. Select engine control module. "Login" using 12233 as the access code. Select "adaptation" and go to adaptation block 3. Give the accelerator pedal a quick "blip" to ensure that the EGR remains turned on for the next minute while you perform the following steps. Note that the display shows a default adaptation value of 32768 and shows approximately 250 +/- 20 mg/stroke of air intake volume. (If it does not show this, you are either on the wrong screen, or you have an older ECU that differs slightly - see next paragraph.) If all is well, enter 33768 as the new adaptation value, and select "test". Note that the displayed air intake volume changes, usually to about 370 mg/stroke. The specification limit is 370 mg/stroke, so if you want to remain within OEM shop manual specifications for emission control reasons, you might have to enter a number slightly smaller than 33768. (If you don't care about road-legal NOx emission limits then leave it at 33768. [Depending on the usage cycle, NOx at this setting can be increased by as much as 40%]) If all is well and you have a setting that you are happy with which results in an intake air volume of 370 mg/stroke or just a hair less, enter "save". Now your intake manifold either will never clog, or will take so long that the engine will wear out first.
Note for '96 Passat and possibly other older ECU variations: The adaptation numbers are in a different range, and you won't be able to get feedback on what you are doing on the same screen. The EGR adaptation number for a '96 Passat with the original "BK" ECU is 188 rather than 33768 and you'll have to go back to "measuring blocks" group 3 to see the effect before "saving" the new setting.
As for warranty, no one has mentioned any problems nor should there be. This adjustment is also completely reversible should one be concerned.
Most provinces and states that do emissions testing on diesels, just check opacity, so this will not be a factor when testing.

I just got back from a 800 mile, 2 mountain pass trip. Averaged almost 45 mpg. The temps on the East side of the state was fairly cold, night temps in the teens, it was 22 when I cranked her up this morning. Fired right up and I gotta say, heated seats are so mich nicer then I ever would have omagined, convinced me I need to heat the Corbin, nothing beats a nice hot, er, well, you get the picture. I have only 2 farkles I have added to the TDI, small (motorcycle of course) fish eyes, and some heated coffee cups. No one likes sipping on cold fufu coffee. Anyway, them passes? This thing just breezed through the hills, but, it did drop to around 22mpg on the steeper parts, more then made up for it on the downhill sides, slip into neutral and you get a 200 mpg reading. This is one smart tranny, if I left it in D with the cruise set it will downshift to keep within 5 mph of the set speed.
Biggest drawback to a new car that is black? It's really dirty, a bounus is I can use a drive through car wash, something I just gaven't mustered the courage to do on the 14.
I wonder how a set of Angels will handle, would that be going to the bright side? ;D

Nice! The Allison trans in my Silverado is smart too, it'll down shift on it's own and give you some engine braking when you need it. You can make it downshift too by tapping on the brakes.
I have heated seats on my Pontiac so I know that a nice warm bum will keep the shivers away while you wait for the heat from the car. I really wanted ventilated seats on my next new car but since the Jetta don't got, I'll have to wait till the next one.

What break in procedure are you following?
Here's one from the TDI site that's tailored for the DSG
-Keep rpms as close to 2000 rpm as possible when driving at a steady speed. This promotes optimum temperatures for the DPF and keeps the engine in the middle of its most efficient rpm range (1800-2200 rpm).
-Allow the DSG or automatic transmission to determine the optimal gear and engine rpm. It knows better than you... Provided you have it trained to be biased to the sport mode the engines shift points will occur at the ideal ranges.
Redline is defined as the maximum rpm allowed by the engine, in the case of all TDI's it is 5,100 rpm. The maximum physical limit of a TDI engine due in part to it's short stroke is approximately 8,800 rpm (this is when you will throw a rod or damage a piston, this rpm is not possible unless you force a downshift into 1st gear while driving 80mph)
The instrument cluster shows a red BAND starting at or around 4600 rpm, most owners will find that very little power resides beyond this point due mostly to the ECU reducing fueling to respect the smoke map.
Adaptive Transmissions, these transmissions learn based on how you apply the power with your foot. Over time they will modify shift patterns with a bias to a "Sport" mode. Train the transmission to shift as close to the recommended rpm ranges below.
When your engine was first produced the motor was placed in a test cell and "Run-in" by a computer run dyno. The motor after the run-in was DRAINED OF ALL ITS FLUIDS (Oil, Coolant etc), the filters were replaced and a unique break-in oil was installed to promote a proper break-in once installed in the car as well as to protect the engine from corrosion during shipping to final assembly.
The "Break-in oil", YES VW does use a specially formulated "Break-In" oil formulated under an internal "TL" specification and produced by Fuchs. The oil is a group IV synthetic 5w30 formulated to comply with the LowSAPS VW507.00 requirements as well as the TL specifications for break-in. The oil is intended to allow a controlled rate of wear while protecting the engine and allowing the internal parts to seat proplerly during the engines first 10,000 road miles.
First 1,000 miles
Keep rpms below 3,800. Avoid steady rpms. Frequent firm (75%) application of power is strongly recommended up to a maximum engine rpm of 3,800. Avoid the use of cruise control so that you naturally fluctuate the power with your foot.
DO NOT CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL UNTIL 10,000 MILES!
1,000-5,000 miles
Use the full 5,100 rpm power range. THIS DOES NOT MEAN DRIVE AROUND AT 5100 RPM! This DOES mean to find the rpm range where your cars best power resides. Most owners will find that the best engine operating range to be between 2000rpm and 4200 rpm for the purpose of acceleration. At all costs avoid using full throttle below 2000 rpm the ECU will attempt to prevent you from applying full power in this range, work with it and don't request it with your foot.
Continue to avoid steady rpms and avoid the use of cruise control. occasional application of full throttle (100%) is recommended to help seat the rings. City driving is ideal for breaking in a TDI due to frequent stops and acceleration. DO NOT CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL UNTIL 10,000 MILES!
Your first oil change is due at 10,000 miles DO NOT change it early! Oil analysis supports 10,000 miles as being realistic for a first change interval. Wear metals will remain at safe levels during this entire first interval thanks to the initial run-in and flush at the factory before the engine was installed in your car.
10,000-60,000
This is when the rest of the break in occurs. The engine from the factory will check out with about 475psi of compression pressure out of the crate. It will take at least 60,000 miles to reach the peak pressure of 510 psi. For the most part once you get to 10,000 miles your compression will be around 490 psi meaning that most of the break in has occurred.
60,000-the life of the motor
The owners have followed the advice above and do not have any oil consumption issues. This also means that with the higher pressure the engine is more efficient returning optimal fuel economy and reduced smoke output. I am still of the opinion that if possible use a LowSAPS 5w40 instead of the 5w30 oils ie Mobil 1 ESP 5w40 formula M (MB229.51, .6 Sulfated Ash)
-
I'll never own one of these. The break in is too complicated. You need someone with a clipboard to make sure you are doing everything right.
-
Here's what the manual says, so easy even a Knight can do it!
Breaking in the engine. (Shortened to make it easy for one of my audience) Drive carefully first 1000 miles. For the first 600 miles no full throttle, do not allow engine to exceed 2/3 of maximum, do not tow a trailer ( dont worry Jim, trunk is big enough to hold a spare suit of armor). From 600 to 1000 miles speed may gradually be increased to maximum permissable road and engine speed.
Big flower next to a note, Breaking in an engine gently will increase service life and reduce oil consumption.
I'm at 1500 miles already, I will say I noticed an improvement on my return trip mpg wise. I did read up on the trailer, I think I may have the car fit with a hitch and find or buil a MC specific trailer so I can haul either the KLR or YZ, I'm getting ready to be certified as a dirt bike instructor so I don't want to leave either bike at the property, I may make the trailer big enough for 2 bikes. Jim, would that count as a farkle?
-
Yes.
I must say that I thought of ya'll less than an hour ago when I parked next to an older Mercedes diesel at the post office. It sounded like the engine was going to explode and the exhaust was extremely non scenty. Granted the new ones don't do that but I just shook my head and drove my 235k Prius off the lot getting 50mpg and using the less expensive regular gas.

Chet, no reply on post #100?
After reading a bunch of posts at some of the TDI sites (http://forums.tdiclub.com/ (http://forums.tdiclub.com/) , http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/ (http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/)) I'm having second thoughts on buying the 3rd party extended warranty they're offering. Have you had a chance to read the fine print on that thing? If it was a VW offering I'd be all over it.

So far I'm not to worried, the two times I had the extended warranties they easily paid for themselves, I really wont be doing much to the car other than drive and fuel. Although it is a third party warranty it is something being pushed by VW and I figure they are trying to be #1 in sales for the midsize sedan market so I should be OK. I will be looking at the VAG COM in the future, it sounds like a nifty piece of equipment, I may even have a guy who has done some work for me before who has one, he's really into the tuner scene so I'd bet he does.
This is the first vehicle that I really enjoy driving, not as much as riding, but since I'm still being restricted on riding, it is nice. Have you set any date for the test drive yet?
-
You know that the adition of a cheap computer chip adds about 30% more power and Torque ,takes about two minutes to fitt /removeand is only about $300 . My friend has just done it to his BRAND new Skoda just like he di to his last one .So the engine goes from 103Kw to about 133 Kw . :)

I'm not 100% sure if I'll get the ext warranty or not. My understanding is that you don't have to purchase it right away anyway. Like the Kawasaki GTPP, you can buy it later as long as the original warranty is in effect.
Yep, gonna test drive a JSW TDI Friday afternoon. The car with my name on it, I put down a $500 deposit, is on it's was from Houston to Chicago at this moment.

I've been reading about the tuner chips at the TDI site. Not a bad return for $300.

I figured at %0 I really couldnt go wrong, I'm not sure I would have if it (extended warranty) had been at 1.9.. I look forward to your impression, like I said before, this is by far the most luxurious new car I have ever owned. On the chip, well, if it improves economy by %30 I'm all over it, it really has enough power as she comes, if it wasn't for the traction controll shw would easily smoke the tires, I can get wheel spin when I'm merging with traffic, well, at least until the system kicks in. Passes and passing is effortless, if I end up with a hitch kit to pull the KLR and YZ around I may be interested as I would be pulling them over 2 mountain passes, but till then I'm more than happy with what she has.
-
Chet,
Test drive Friday afternoon, so I'll give you my impressions Sat morn over coffee. :)
My car may even be there Friday when we get there, so I may even have the car on Sat.
You have this stereo/nav system right, the RNS315 GPS system?
Volkswagen RNS315 GPS system demo, review, and tips in a VW Jetta TDI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioVNMxAIc5I#ws)
Does it have HD radio on it? I've read conflicting reports on that.
Also, for the TPMS, does it tell you the PSI of each tire (using sensors in each tire like the C14) or just if one is low (using the ABS system)?

Same radio, but I dont think it has the HD radio and the heat controls aren't there, other then that it is the same as pictured. The TPMS doesn't have the readout, that would be nice to have. I'm looking forward to your review, enjoy the test ride.

So we took a trip into Chicago yesterday and had our test drive. The dealership is just about right in the heart of downtown and the entire area is mostly high end car dealers. We pulled into the dealer's parking garage and for the first time in my life I had a valet park my car. I didn't like that one bit to tell you the truth. I told the valet that and he laughed and said not to worry, he'd take good care of my car. :o
The dealer's indoor showroom is amazing, all high-tech and VERY nice. Beautiful new cars as far as the eye can see. I had to check out some Audis while I waited for the porter to bring the car we were going to test drive around to the front.
NICE car! We tested a black/black Jetta Sportwagen TDI DSG w/sunroof no nav. (the Jetta we're buying does have nav)
We sat in the car for a bit out front while the salesman told us about the car. I half listened (I've been reading lots on the car so I already knew most of what he was telling us) while I played with the switches and buttons, checking everything out. That sunroof is GREAT! Quality everything and so far I'm loving the car. I started her up and the lil diesel is so quiet and smooth as a top! I pulled out into traffic and we headed for Lake Shore drive.
The first thing that I noticed, other than the traffic (traffic was a mess and those freakin taxi drivers are crazy!) was how solid and planted the car felt. The lil 2.0 has some serious get up and go, it's way more peppy than I thought that it would be. The DSG is so smooth and the shifting is seamless.
I drove for a bit and then it was my wife's turn. We both agreed, we love the car.
Back at the dealership and I'm checking the car out more closely. I check under the 'bonnet' and they sure did shoehorn that TDI into that compartment. Every square inch of space is filled and I imagine it would be a nightmare to have to work on anything in there. Again, quality everything and great attention to detail in the design and engineering.
At this point the salesman is just standing back and giving me some room to look at everything. He asks us what we think and we look at each other and say sold!
We went back inside and filled out some paperwork. Our salesman was very personable and didn't try to feed me any BS. In fact, the whole process was a pleasure. Now we just have to wait for our Jetta to be delivered. It should be any day now. I'm planning on going back to Chicago and picking the car up on Thursday. ;D
As we were heading for the door I mention to the salesman that I had looked online for a owner's manual because I wanted to read it before we picked up the car. He said hold on. He went back to the car we just drove and grabbed the manual out of it and handed it to me.
-
Sounds like a great dealer experience. Rare in this day. Congrats.
-

Gotta love forced induction!
It's a shame the small American cars/trucks never got into this. :-\
I have an eye on one of those Audi's myself but you can't get any of the good diesels here except in the big SUV (Q7?)
I want something like this

Except built towards rally! :o
And of course lucky 13!
Sounds like you made a nice choice though. Congratulations!
-
I've never understood why this country is so anti-diesel.
-
Sounds like a great dealer experience. Rare in this day. Congrats.
Thanks Pinky.
Of all the dealers I've had to deal with in the past, this one is by far the best. I'm actually surprised that with all the 'overhead' this dealer must have that they're able to give me such a good price on the car. As I menioned, $500 under invoice.
-
I've never understood why this country is so anti-diesel.
I think that this car could change a lot of folks minds about diesel. Standing behind the car while running I couldn't even smell the exhaust and there was zero soot in the tailpipe. It's a brand new car of course but you could have put on a white glove and wiped the inside of the tailpipe and come back clean.
-
Sounds just like my experience :) I still dont have any soot showing, that's after 1600 miles. The motor and tranny (DSG) are so smooth, and like Conrad said, seemless. I found out that if you begin the drive when in Manual mode it will automatically shift when you hit redline and it will automatically shift down when the engines RPMs will match. Sport mode simply allows more RPMs before it up shifts and will downshift sooner. I have been practicing my hyper miling, I will shift to neutral as I am approaching a stop light, just dont forget to have your foot on the brake when you go to shift back into Drive when you're at a stop, and dont forget that it is in neutral. That is how smooth this tranny is.
I got 46 MPG last night, mix of highway and city/urban driving with plenty of hills. Like I said earlier, I look forward to driving this car, I am challenging my self to get a tank of fuel to average 50 MPG.

Gm's experiment in diesels in the mid 70's

Diesel was not taxed as high as petrol in Europe so it florished . If in the USA you paying over $10 per gallon for petrol and diesel was 30% cheaper diesel engines would have been everywhere just like Europe.
I was looking at the VW range in Australia and we get a few different model that you do not get and we do not get some that you get . But we get SCREWED on price and I do mean SCREWED
Passat 125TDI Highline Sedan 6 Spd DSG
$48,962.50*

USA priced $26000

Gm's experiment in diesels in the mid 70's
I'm not following, was that a bad motor or something?
I have a 6.6l Duramax in my Silverado, along with an Allison transmission, and that combo is great! My truck has a full sized bed and 4 doors, it's a BFT for sure and I get nearly 20mpg on the highway. When I'm pulling the 5th wheel I get around 12mpg, unless I'm dealing with a headwind then it can drop to as low as 8mpg. The fuel economy that I get pulling is better than some get without a trailer attached.
-
That was an experiment in gas motor to diesel I think.
-
GM screwed up in the 70's with diesel same as they are screwing up today with batteries (Volt car). A unionized company, what can one expect?
Anyway, HOW GM screwed up back in the day is they tried to convert their gas junk engines to diesel.
-
I'd be a lot poorer if it wasn't for GM and the folks that love them.....VBG.
I had 3 of the 350 big blocks that nobody wanted.....until someone figured out that you could pull the diesel and put in a 350....big block only.
From boat anchors to gold overnight.
Had a 79 diesel rabbit that the DPO had put larger tires onto in the hope of getting even better fuel economy. It couldn't even get out of it's own way until I switched the tires back to OE sizing. Then it was a beast with 50 hp.....if it would have had AC I probably would have kept it a lot longer.
-
GM just dose not get it ! the Unions and Government do not understand that they cannot meet the sales levels they keep revising down for the VOLT . GM management has lost the plot for the last 30 plus years . Poor quality cars ,bad service ,bad treatment of customer , dealers overcharging for service ,just stupid marketing of some models around the world you name it they got it wrong EXCEPT for getting money from the Government .

The big engines in the BFT's were always fine, I think it was more the brief foray in to 4 cylinder diesels that gave everyone the bad impression.
My Dub (an '80 Caddy) came stock with a naturally aspirated 1.5l diesel and a 4 speed. Most of that era (in the smaller sizes mind) were similarly underpowered. Best money I ever spent on that truck was the 5 speed, so now I'm up around 45MPG and can still do highway speed! ;)
-
The dealer tells me that my Jetta was put on a transport truck, along with 13 more cars that are Chicago bound, on 12/8. My car still isn't here as of yesterday! How can it take THAT long to get here from Houston?
-
At last! My Jetta was delivered yesterday. ;D
She's all ready for me to pick up and I'll be doing that today.
Gonna take the train in to Chicago, my salesman is gonna pick me up at the train station. At least I won't have to deal with the damn traffic on the way in.

Hey guys!
Yep, I got me a new Silverdammit in the garage today! She's a beauty and so far I'm loving that new car! Ah, that new car smell, it's almost intoxicating. It even made my garage smell better. :o
The purchase process went smoothly and almost all was well. The only issue was that I told my salesman NOT to put any dealer stickers on the car and NOT to install the front license plate bracket. No stickers BUT when I walked to the front of the car to look her over, guess what? Yep, the freakin bracket was installed by one of the guys in service. I was pissed. I asked my salesman to come to the front of the car and take a look. He was pissed too, not even close to what I was though of course. What could I do? Of course I accepted the car, like I wasn't going to buy it cuz of that right?
My salesman fell all over himself giving me a bunch of swag items along with a card for a free tank of fuel to try and placate me. That helped a little.
Yes, in Illinois you're required to have a front license plate but I've been diving for years without one and never had an issue with The Man about it. The front ends of cars just look better without that bracket. I could take it off but the damage is done, two holes in the plastic bumper cover. I may see if I can find two plastic plugs to fill the holes.

Connie gave the new comer a dirty look when I pulled in the garage. I caressed her and told her not to worry cuz she's my true love. :-*

One funny moment for me was when the finance manager tried to sell me the extended warranty. I stopped him before he got rolling and told him that he had better give me his best price right off the bat because I really was iffy about the ext warranty company.
His best price? $1,995!
I about busted out laughing. I said come on man! I know that there's a HUGE dealer profit involved with this warranty and that he could do better than that. All of a sudden he says, "wait a minute, I may have a coupon or two that can help." He opens his desk drawer and pulls out a $500 coupon towards the purchase of the warranty. I asked him why he didn't offer that up front and he said that the forgot about it.
Right, thanks but no thanks.
-
Here she is, not a Silverdammit but damn nice.

You can sure tell that it's the "off season" for sport touring motorcycle riders when there are over 160 replies about a diesel station wagon. Enjoy the new ride!

Sad but true.
But remember, it's a Sportwagen. ;)

That's a weird antenna.
It doesn't get very good reception either for some reason.

While in court (not as a spectator) some years back, one of the cases before mine was a guy that owned a Corvette who got a ticket for no front plate. He pleaded his case before the judge with the reasoning that the plate made it look ugly. The judge started speaking to no one in particular about the state (VA) having to have two plates and that it would be less expensive to have just one. He also agreed that it spoiled the looks of the car. He dismissed the case but told the owner to get a front plate as it was the law of the land.

I've been doing some driving in the Jetta, took the grandson to the Chicago Field Museum yesterday. The more I drive that car the more I like it and I flat out love the DSG! I have it set for 'sport' and it's almost like driving a 6 speed manual only I don't have to worry about the clutch. More than once I've found myself about to lift my left foot to press in the clutch as I'm slowing or stopping. I love the way that DSG downshifts on it's own and uses engine braking to slow down. That tranny is VERY smart and always seems to know what gear I'm wanting next. Smooth as butta too!
45 mpg on the way into Chicago yesterday. ;D

Same here, well, in sport mode when mama aint on board. The tranny really is nice and it compliments the TDI really well. I can't help but wonder how it would be in my 65 Mustang. It does take a little getting used to when coming to a stop, as you appraoch a complete stop it does the last shift to first it tends to stop quite quickly, not as smoothe as I like, once accustomed to this little quirk it's great. While it isn't rape me fast it's plenty sporty and knowing it'll cruise at 45 mpg it is as frugal as any connie owner could ever ask for and unlike the connie, it comes with cruise and heated seats from the factory ;D

You're right, it does take some getting used to. Just gotta let off the brake a bit at the last downshift otherwise it's a bit abrupt.
Nope, she ain't fast but she likes going round curves. ;D For a 2.0 it hauls ass and pulls you outta the hole pretty nicely. I don't quite have 1,000 miles on it yet so I'm still babying it.
Also unlike the Connie, there's no issue with heat. :stirpot:

I'm in the automobile towing business and can tell you, that all German cars have many electrical/electronic issues.
For that reason, my wife wasn't allowed ;) to buy VW Jetta Wagon TDI and had to settle for Honda CR-V.....FYI
Assembled in US of A http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Honda_assembly_plants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Honda_assembly_plants) to get around import restrictions.
UK CR-V's are assembled in Swindon for same reason :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Group#Suzuki_Motor_Corporation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Group#Suzuki_Motor_Corporation) to keep OT I believe Suzuki & VW have "fallen out".
I didn't know that VW Group had aquired Ital Design via Audi / Lamborghini...Much like when Ford aquired Ghia.

Hey Chet,
Does your owner's manual talk about the glowplugs at all? I, like you, have the keyless ignition system and nowhere in the JSW manual does it talk about how to start a diesel properly.
In talking about the car without the keyless system the manual mentions the glowplug light and that you should turn the key on to the first position to preheat the glowplugs but that's it! It doesn't say to wait till the light goes out and then start the car at all. With the keyless system it doesn't even say that much. If you follow the manual on starting the car with the keyless system, no matter how cold it is, you just hop in, press the foot brake and then the start button and away you go. I asked my salesman about waiting for the glowplug light to go out and he said, 'huh'?
What I do is to press the start button, without pressing on the foot brake, to turn on the ignition. Then I wait for the glowplug light to go out. Then I press the foot brake and the start button.
How would a person with no diesel experience know how to do this the right way? :o
-
The way it was explained to me is that newer diesels have glow plugs that heat up very quickly. Within a couple seconds they are ready to go. Long gone are the days of waiting 15-30 seconds for the light to go out.
-
Conrad, I asked also, she said to hop in, brake and start. I do the same as you, I get in, hit the button, strap on the seatbelt, brake and start. I havent had any hesitation to start, even on the trip to the East side of the state, upper teens and she started like she was in Florida. Did a fill up today, 560 miles, took 13.42 gallons. 41.7 mpg, all kinds of differant driving conditions. Not too shaby. A bummer? After getting the fill up I did the car wash thingy, got home to dry her up and when I got to the front I found a busted fog light lens, I'm gonna need to get some kind of protection on them, anyone have any suggestions? I imagine the lens aint gonna be cheap and I really dont want to be replacing them every 2500 miles.

This is what I hear also. My Duramax glow plugs actually come on periodically for a split second when the truck is unattended and the temparature is below a certain degree, I'm not sure if all diesels have this system now.

It was 20 in my garage this morn and the glowplug light took maybe 4 or 5 seconds to go out. Nothing lilke my '03 Duramax that's for sure!

Sorry about your fog light lens, did you price it yet?
I took my first long trip with the Jetta on Sunday. Drove down to southern Illinois and back. 45 mpg down and 37 on the way back. The wind started up on the way back and we were driving right into it. I was sweating it a bit on the way back. I missed the exit for diesel and I wanted to wait for the next one. My range read ZERO as the nav system told me that my exit was coming up. I pumped 13.9 gals into the 14.5 gal tank. :o
Speaking of diesel. In reading at the TDI forums they all recommend staying away from biodiesel in concentrations any higher than 5%. They make it sound like it's hard to find non bio around. I had no problems.
-
Chet,
Has your Jetta used any oil at all? The manual says that it might use a bit during the break-in process. The problem is that no one around here has the VW spec 507.00 oil in stock. I wanted to have a lil on hand just in case I need to top her off before the 10,000 mile oil change.
Also in the manual it says that the factory filled coolant is at least 40% antifreeze (VW G12 plus plus) good down to only -13F. Minus 13F? :o That's crazy, it can easily get that cold around here!
I ordered a liter of the VW spec 507.00 oil and 1.5 liter of the purple G12 plus plus from this place. http://www.idparts.com/catalog/ (http://www.idparts.com/catalog/)
I'm gonna drain a bit of the factory coolant and replace it with undiluted G12++

Effingham. We had lunch at Wild Wings while watching the Bears kick some Viking butt. One of my grandsons spent a week with us over the holiday break. They live in TN and Effingham is about halfway between their house and our's. My son met us there.

Hope you had a great time with your son. Anytime you ride south you're welcome to give me a holler.

$163.75 + tax. Ouch!!!! I'm gonna see what I can find for protection, cheap insurance I wish I had done before the broken light..... I guess I need to check the oil, bad on me. I'll let you know in about 5 minutes. If it ever gets to -13 around here it's a sure sign the ice age is starting, on the East side of the state it's a sure bet to get that cold and colder so I'll be doing the same as you, I really do want this car to last me 20 years.

Oil is right at the top of the line, looks as fresh as any new oil could. Looks like she burns as much as the connie, which is none.
-
I have just a hair under 1k miles and the oil looks fine too.
Still loving the Jetta! One thing that I don't like is the fob with the stupid switchblade key. While in my pocket the button keeps getting pressed and the key pops out in my pocket.
Is that a VW fob in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Why yes it is and I am. :P
-
Pants too tight? You know that went out in the 70's unless you are a woman or one of the "new" generation of confused young males. :)

I put some tape on it, frugal fix works like a charm ;D
Did you know that a VW fob works as a pick up tool? Chicks dig a VW ;D My wife was hit on by a one of them long haired stripper dudes, my only question was why she was in a location to meet him. She was quite secretive :-X

Good idear on the tape. I was looking for an o-ring that would fit but I'll try the tape till my pants get back to the right size.
Um, wait. Chicks dig a VW I get that but why was the dude hitting on your wife, he's not a chick right? Maybe it's a hair thing?

Thin perspex cut to size and bent using a hairdryer for the fog lamp covers is one way to get cheap covers. You may be able to use velcro tabs or you could just use a few small spots of clear silicon to glue them on ,personally velcro tabs cut to size would be the best .I would also consider what areas will get stone chipped and get some clear film to protect it look at tankslapper for the idea ,I am sure you do it you self if you can fins a stcokist of tghe 3M film..
-
It was nice enough outside yesterday that I gave the Vdubbya it's first hand wash and wax job. The closer I look at this car the more I love it. While washing and waxing it you can really get a close look as to how much thought and attention to detail VW spent on the thing. Quality inside and out.
-
Friday I took a little coastal trip to Sequim, averaged 51 out and 47 back, around 180 miles total.
I found these online, I'm going to order, I just can't decide if I want clear or tinted.

I drove out to the mountains today in my Prius and got about 52mpg. Haven't spent any time waxing or washing it unless you count that rainstorm we had about a week ago..

I made a slight adjustment to the above to show what wifey and I did today. ;)

I'm with you on that...wish I could say that I rode out to the mountains. Could only do 15 miles yesterday.

About $1500 these days.

235k + miles...I would say yes, I do like it. It's peppy if you stomp it with the batteries charged. Not charged, as in going up a steep mountain for a bit and getting close to the top....not so much. Ahhh but that long downhill glide charges the batteries back up again and I'm good to go.

I didn't know that you had that many miles on her Jim, what year is it?

2005 bought in Nov 2004.

Lots of frequent "smiter" miles.

I went to the Audi / Volkswagen / Porsche dealer tonight before work and test drove the Audi 3. I am sooo impressed with the performance of the TDI,
and the build of the Audi, but the roof line is just a little low for me.. So I sat in a Jetta, same problem. Sat in a Passat, wow! I fit just fine, and it was loaded,
so I asked what the tow rating is, and it is zero.. Not recommended for the Passat or the Jetta or the Audi 3. So, they put great torquey engines in these
autos, and you can't even tow a m/c trailer with it? I am bummed, but after looking under the rear, I realized that the frame rails that a hitch would normally
bolt up to are not there..No place to bolt a hitch anywhere. So, it looks like I'm down to the Toyota Rav4, and the Subaru Outback 3.6r. Checked out
the '12 Honda CRV, but I just don't trust that 4 banger gas to pull a trailer uphill..
Good luck gents with your newly found fuel misers.

To bad VW isn't putting the TDI in the Tiguan (at least in the US).
Sounds like you want Japanese (or German), but what about the Ford Edge? 30 mpg with the 2.0 ecoboost is pretty hard to beat in a decent looking small SUV/crossover. It also has a 3500 lb tow capacity.

Hitch kits are available for the Jetta, I'm having one installed next month, it will be used to pull a three rail MC trailer. I'll also get her chipped for the two passes I wil pass through.

I know nothing of the A3 but the Jettas have a tow rating of 2k and 1k, gasser and TDI respectively. The TDIs can certainly tow more than they are ratted for but I think that VW is covering themselves because of the emissions stuff on the TDI, the DPF mainly.
The build quality on the Jetta is top notch!
I drove the Jetta in a snow storm yesterday for the first time and it did well. The traction control works great, as does the ABS. :o

After reading your post, I went to the Ford dealer, sat in the Edge, and the roof line is too low, same with the Escape. I do fit in the Explorer, but the price jumps. What I would pay for a fairly stripped down model, I could get a loaded Rav4 or Outback, basically same ratings.

The salesman told me that the Jetta would be too small for me, and it didn't tow.. So now that you all are informing me that it will tow, I'm going back to see
if I can fit. Fingers crossed, 'cause I really like that TDI..
-
Hey Chet,
How's that Jetta doing? It's been about 3 months now and mine is just great. Now that the weather is warming up nicely I'm seeing some really good mpg numbers, approaching 50 on the highway. My wife is driving it mostly now since I'm on the bike.
Did you get a free 3 month Sirius radio trial with yours? I did and just got a call from them. I talked them into giving me a 3 month subscription, music only, for $11 total price. The rep said that I should call them back before the 3 months is up and do the same thing again. For that price I'll do it but not more than that.
-
Well, 6500 miles and no issues, other then my 6000 miles service-it wasnt, it was a simple checkup, which was done when I had the foglight replaced. Going 10000 miles on the first oil change? Not me, I didn't like 6000 miles. I will be finding some oil and a filter this weekend for my piece of mind. Other then what I feel is lousy customer service from the service department I am loving the car, weather hasn't warmed up here but I am getting an average of around 42 mpg and 47 on longer trips. I have managed 607 on a tank of fuel, included 2 1/2 passes (Tiger mountain is kinda a pass) each way. Next month I will be getting the hitch installed for hauling around the bikes (Dirtbikes of course!) So far I have used zero oil but I am on my second filling of the washer fluid and I have discovered why I don't like black (sorry Jay ;)) It shows dirt worse then a pile of dirt and I hate washing any vehicle. I let the Sirius run out to see if they would make a special come back offer, free reactivation and 3 more free months. Once that is up I will simply add it to my account, which is around 8 or 9 a month. The week I didn't have the sat I tried regular radio, hated it and used my phone to stream via bluetooth music. What really sucked? I listen to NASCAR most of the time, good background noise and gives me fodder for work, we have a few of us with our favorite drivers and since I'm the only anti HMS fan I always have lots to say ;D I tried installing the film for the fog and headlight protection, just too darn cold to do it right, I have one fog light covered and it looks really good and my eyes can't tell a differance in light output. If we get a nice sunday I will heatup the lights, have a hotgun handy, and go for it.
You had sad you were going to get some oil for just in case, what/where did you get it?
I have seen a coupla gray ones in town, I winder if they would trade?
I do need to spend some time on the bike, with the nasty weather wev'e had the last coula months I just didn't feel my reflexes were ready for the really wet stuff and potential ice in spots. Spent the last 3 weekends on the KLR becoming a dirtbike instructor, one word sums up the weather wetcoldsnowsleethailrainwetcoldmiserable. But so much fun ;D The inlet freeze is a real deal, they have a simple temp fix while they are awaiting upgrade kits, straight from VW folks, not the dealer. That transmission is sooooooooooooooo awesome. Heck, the car is awesome, not C14 Silverdammit awesome, but almost...
-
Quick reply for now Chet, here's where I bought the oil.

If they don't have it, you don't need it.
-
My car hasn't used a drop of oil either, as far as I can tell anyways. It sounds like you've been doing WAY more driving that I have, I'm just under 3k miles.
That 10k oil change interval had me a bit nervous too. I'm waiting till then though. You may want to do a bit of reading at these links first.
Here's some great info on breaking in a new TDI, oil change intervals, including VW's use of break-in oil.

Synthetic of course, once you have reached the third fillup, the heated system requires a carefull breakin to properly set the impellers to the pump housing and prevent premature squirts ;D

The use of synthetic also prevents post squirt dribbles.
Over at the Jetta boards they do argue discuss about what type of washer fluids are best. :o

Arguing is discouraged over there, that place just don't feel like family. I'm gonna use Mobil Delvac 1 full syn. for the change. Big bummer today, freezing fog so I get to cage it--AGAIN!!!

From what i read on the TDI forum yes. I haven't done the actual research but they have it listed to meet the 10000 mile intervals.

I miss my 03 Golf tdi. What a great car. 10,000 mile oil changes every time. No problems. 125,000 miles were great. Don't go with a K + N air filter. I used it for a little while and had to change my map sensor twice. Castrol Syntec was great for the vw. Freds tdi page was my favotite forum on these cars. Very informative. They' ll help find the local non dealer mechanics too. What types of mods are you getting. These tdis are so capable of serious numbers. Rocket chips, ECU programming, injector change outs, and intake / exhaust were the mods I saw the most. Good luck!
-
I'll be doing a chip and go from there, I will be pulling a 3 rail trailer for the dirt bikes accross 2 1/2 mountain passes at least 6 times a year. I do like Freds TDI page, lots of good info.

Yeah, that is interesting! I'm not sure that 0 to 60 in less than 9 seconds is anything to brag about though. :o
I wonder if that 7 speed DSG will be available here in the States.

I may go with a chip/tune at some point, maybe a DPF delete too. That's about it, well, maybe a new sway bar too.

Do they have any performance upgrades for the Prius? ;) Maybe a pair of 9 volt batteries, seatbelt shoulder pads, and a pair of fuzzy dice? ;D
-
I wouldn't know. The ICE sucks as far as power goes. The electrics give it enough ooomph to make it road worthy. Otherwise I wouldn't own one.
I just looked and there are 'chips' out there that 'say' they enhance performance and increase MPG.... You know I'm happy with 50+ in traffic so I won't be fiddlin with the brains of this vehicle anytime soon. And the power output is adequate for my needs.
The Prius, and any hybrid for that matter, don't work like regular vehicles. Lots of stuff going on in the computers and the like. I'd be ascardt to mess with them. I don't usually do enhancements to performance on any vehicle I've owned. I've also not had problems in those areas, either. So, no chips for me.
I've made the first foray into that on the C14 by buying an Area P exhaust. I'm not expecting anything out of it but a few pounds of weight savings and some sound. It's fairly easy to do and doesn't mess with anything electronic.
-
Were it not for the trailer and passes I wouldn't do anything, plenty of oomph and great economy.

I test drove a new Golf TDI 6MT a couple weeks ago. What a great drivetrain! I tried to justify trading in my Mazda 3 hatchback but it's only a few months old and I'd just be taking too big of a financial hit to make it worth it. I'll have to take another hard look at it if VW ends up with some good finance incentives, but I've heard that doesn't happen very often on the Golf, especially the TDI.
-
I don't know about the Golf but I got 1.9% on my Jetta sportwagen, I think that Chet got even better than that on his Jetta.
You're right about the drivetrain, they did a great job on it. My wife drives it most of the time now since I'm on the bike. She raves about it and tells anyone who'll listen how much she loves it.
-
Yep, I snuck in at %0. Did 598 on the last tank, still had 1/8 of a tank left, 13.2 gallons. Almost at 8,000 miles, still loving it. I sure do wish I coulda got the gray, but the rate was too good to pass up.
-
Look on the bright side Chet, with your Jetta being black there's less of a chance that you'll get a speeding ticket right?

Pappy and Conrad, any updates on your TDi's? The Jetta TDi is very high on my list of potential vehicles.

We still seriously love the car Jeremy. Only one small issue since we've had it. When the sun has been beating down on the sunroof for a while, and really gets things heated up, opening or closing the sunroof is sometimes a bit noisy. It's caused by not enough lube in the tracks. It's a warranty issue for sure but after doing some online research on it I just got some 'special' high priced VW/Audi sunroof lube and I'll take care of it myself. I'm not going to have the dealership touch my car unless absolutely necessary.

Other than that the car is great! 35 to 40 mpg in the city (the lower numbers come from having the AC on so much lately. The AC in that car kicks ass!) and mid to upper 40s on the highway.
-
You guys ever owned an older TDi? Some of those are getting 50+ mpg AND they can run on BIO diesel. I haven't done any research but why wouldn't VW make the new TDi BIO compatible? Maybe I should just join the TDi forum. ;D

This is my first VW and first TDI of course. VW says that any bio diesel with a higher percentage than 5% is a no no for the newer TDIs.
Try this one.

Well, I just got done doing a little excursion through the mountains, after 250 or so miles I was showing an average of 50.2. Not to shaby for lots of elevation changes. The TDI convinced me I needed a diesel pickyup so I traded the Toyota Tacoma in on a 99 F250 with the 7.3 turbo diesel. Full bed, Lariat package, loaded. I'm getting just shy of a calculated 19mpg (better than the Tacoma did empty BTW) pulling a light trailer and loaded bed accross several passes. I never would have dreamed I would get that kinda mileage with a full sized truck and that torque? Wow and so so roomy.
Would I buy another TDI? Yes, in a heartbeat. IMO it's by far the sportiest economy car on the road. Take one for a test drive, just be prepared to buy one. Plenty of room to boot, something I think Jeremy may find important ;)
-
Chet, I still miss my '99 F250 Lariat Diesel 4x4.. :'( When diesel hit 3 bucks, I sold her with all the goodies, plow, cap, remote starter from audiovox (rare on a diesel).
But I sure saved a ton, enough on fuel monthly to purchase a new turbo Subaru Forester, and paid that off in three years. I would have joined you and
Conrad with the TDI Jetta wagon ownership, as I really enjoyed the test ride and mileage that the diesel gave. But, I need to tow two trailers, and the Jetta just will not do the job
without heavy strain, so I wound up purchasing another Subaru, 3.6 Outback.
But, I still have a few goodies for the F 250! I have factory new in box mud guards (all 4), and factory wheel locks, new in package, and window vents,
new in package. I can check around for anything else, as I normally keep the brochures, sales aids, etc. Let me know if you're interested in any of it..

About all I need is a decent cold air system, the PO removed the air box and installed a very large filter and retained the flexible straw like intake hose. I already have the Edge tuner which works every bit as good as they say. The dealer also installed a new 4 inch exhaust so once the in matches the out all will be good. The PO used the truck to haul their horses around and the truck only had 118000 miles, truck is as close to new as most 2011s out there. To top things off? I got $1400 back for the trade. Twice the truck and money for a cattle guard and winch. Life is good :)
-
Sounds like you made out darn good on that deal Chet!
You've given up on towing with the TDI then?
I'm with you on the diesel pick-up too. I have an 03 Silverado Duramax/Allison, crew cab, 8' bed. It's a great truck! I bearly fits in my garage but it does fit and I can even close the overhead door. :D

I just wish the wagon had the third row option so I could fit the whole family. Then I would probably trade the CX-9 since it only averages 17 mpg with alot of shuttling kids back and forth to track, cross country, band and other activities. My wife likes the Audi Q7 TDi but I definitely don't want to spend that much on a vehicle when I don't know what my job situation will be this fall or winter. :o
Maybe VW will make a Passat wagon for guys like me that need more than 5 seats............. [pipe dream].

Yep, no need to tow with the Jetta. I'm thinking she's gonna live and die stock. There's a first for everything :o

Unfortunately my C14 didn't come with that option. >:(

Hey Chet!
Did you see the 'recall' on diesel Jettas?
Seems folks need some extra stickers on their cars to keep them from putting gas in their diesels.
VW is sending these yellow things out.
I didn't get mine but I wish they would hurry the heck up! Where are my stickers, I COULD PUT GASOLINE IN MY TANK AT ANY MOMENT!
-
I'm embarrassed to say my brother rented a Peugeot in France and it was so quiet we had no idea it was a diesel. Didn't sound anything like my old diesel rabbit. No smell like my old diesel rabbit. The gas cap had diesel in slightly raised letters black on black. I need reading glasses and without them I couldn't see the letters. I put gas in it, about 1/2 tank. It still ran but in about 15 miles it started running rough. We drove it another 50 miles or so to a Hertz place (still running no problem but missing some) and they exchanged it no problem.

How long ago was that? There have been plenty of horror stories of folks putting gas into their diesel Jettas and the cars certainly didn't make it 50 miles, let alone 15. This can be a VERY VERY expensive mistake in these cars.
-
It was this last May. The car was a 2012. Must have been enough diesel still in the tank to make it work. We drove it from Mont Saint Michel to Rennes airport, almost 100 km. That was the closest Hertz.
-
Even if the engine survived without damage, the cost of emptying the tank and refilling in France would have been a some bucks. But as it is we actually got some free diesel out of it from Hertz.
I wonder what they do with the diesel gas mixture. That's what we used in the Forest Service for torches for back fires and prescribed burns.

I'm surprised that the Hertz people didn't go over the use of diesel in that car with you before you two dove off with it. Filling a diesel Jetta with gas can lead to a bill in the area of $6k (stealer repair price).

They said nothing about diesel. Nothing in any of the paper work. They didn't seem to care about it when we brought it in.

My arms and shoulders are sore today, that's a lot like work you know? :o

I beg to differ Jim. 80% chance of rain today and 70% chance for tomorrow. We're WAY behind on the rain (although you couldn't tell by my ride home from work on Thurs when I got soaked to the bone, only 20% chance that day) so I did my part, short of doing a rain dance and no one wants to see me dance... :o

No idea. SWMBO dropped it of and picked it up. It has become her car :(

Lots of dealers have been using the incorrect oil for these cars when doing the 'free' oil changes.
-
I hate that when that happens. I've essentially lost the Prius to the wife and I'm stuck with the Rav when I need a car to travel in.... So much so that I've ordered a new radio for it.
-

I shoulda seen it coming. With the sole exception being the C14 each and every new vehicle has ended up being hers. If she gets her MC endorsement I'm getting a lawyer ;)
-
I guess the same thing has happened with our Jetta. My wife drives it most of the time but that's because I'm riding my bike.
Once the bike gets put up after the roads turn to crap around here, I drive the Jetta. My wife and I commute together since her workplace is right on my way to work and we work the same hours, I just drop her off and pick her up. We did this for a short time using the bike but she said that the helmet messed up her hair. :P

Probably cheaper to just buy another C14.
-
24000 miles. Still loving it. Mileage has dropped to low 40s with the cooler air.
-
We're still loving our JSW too. It's coming up on a year and around 9k miles time to change the oil. I'm too anal to take it to the dealer for my 'free' oil change, so I'll be doing it myself to make sure that it's done right.
-
Got 11,500 miles on my 2012 Passatt TDI, bought in August. I absolutely love it to death. The only thing I didn't like was the "beep" of the horn when I locked the door, and I found that that feature can be turned off. Still in love.
-
Just started looking into the tdis again and found a couple nice deals on Passats.
Price: $27,255 Sale Price: $23,555
Price: $27,290 Sale Price: $23,590
I'll check and see if the prices are legit and check them out.
-
As much as I love the Jetta, the Passat is that much better. Looking forward to reading about your new car :) I do warn you, you won't ride as much when the weather turns sour, the mileage is better with the TDi.
-
Hopefully the prices are solid and not false advertising. I was looking at the Jetta and the Golf until I saw these prices. I'll know by the weekend.
-
I sure wish diesel prices would come down... Takes 2 credit cards to fill the truck >:(
-
TONS of info on the TDIs here.

Be warned about the doom and gloom crowd though. To read what some of them have to say you'd think we were driving a time bomb.
We have just under 11k on our Sportwagen and it's been flawless. Still lovin the car.
-

I don't drive my truck much but I did fill the tank (35 gal tank :o ) right after the local station winterized the diesel. I feel your pain. I'm taking the truck today just to get it out and about.

There you go Chet! The fuel milage should average out pretty well between the two.

How are those diesels doing in the winter ?? Any issues with the diesel gelling up ??
On the Peterbilt I drive (Cat C-15) if the temp starts getting down into the low 20's I treat the fuel because froze up big rigs are no fun at all.. :-\

No issues for me, but I live in the Pacific Northwet, where it's green, and wet. I'll know more when I finish my retirement place and move to the dry side of the state.

Something about the eyes of the beholder, etc....... I think it is a great looking car ;D

Pricing on the Passat was funny business. The lowest prices I am seeing are just a hair under $25,100. I'll keep picking at them.

I've never had any issues with my Jetta and gelling fuel. I don't use any additives either. The coldest we've had around here since we got the car was around minus 5F. The station where I fill up 99.9% of the time has D2, I try to avoid using any biodiesel if I can help it.

Some parts of the car look great but I can't get past the looks of the rear wheel covers. I just showed it to my wife and she said, "yuck, but if it gets 261 mpg she could live with it."
-
A look only a Prius owner could love.

Put a deposit on a black Ivory Passat to match the black Ivory C-14 I just bought. I found out the Passat feels more powerful because it uses urea fluid in the exhaust system instead of chokink the power in the catalytic converter systems the Jetta, Beetle, and Golf use. I was wondering why those didn't use the fluid.

Most people don't want to add any fluid to vehicle much less fuel, so when urea injection gets tossed into the equation...........

$15-$20 every 10,000 miles or so seems pretty simple. And VW does it for the first 36,000 miles.

And all ya'll have been keeping this to yourselves! And I haven't even started drinking yet...
I'm going to have to strip this stuff out and send it to the 'Funny' board... I'm laughing so hard now I'm getting a headache.

Hadn't thought of that angle...I imagine it must be a German Lager of some sort. American won't do at all from what I'm told.

I'm selling two GM conversion vans, a Savana and a Express I love them, but thay love way too much gas, I drive a LOT, my 9,000lb 4x4 diesel pick up gets better mileage.
I'm buying a 2009 - 2011 TDI Jetta sport wagon I'm never buying anything new again way to much deprecation, I'm selling my 2006 Ram laramie diesel 4x4 for almost what I paid for it three years ago , $22,000 , I've been looking for four months finally I found a deal, 2009 Laramie 4x4 diesel for $23,500 I'm flying out fri 630am to drive it back, I buy trucks from out of state all the time for my business. The list price for this truck is over $ 60,000 new, deprecation SUCKS.
The guy next door is the manager of the parts department at the local VW Audi dealership.

Say what? My JSW doesn't and you have the same motor that I do.

They put the blue dye in the urea which makes it...
Wait for it.....

If I have this right you have a car that can run on biodiesel (crap) but you have to **** in the fuel to get it to run? I retract everything I said about hybrid electric cars and can now start making fun of rolling toilets.
-
I can't wait to start driving my new Pissat. I don't care if VW has to crap in it if I get over 40 mpg.
I had a 2003 Golf tdi I bought new when diesel prices were $1.43 per gallon and gas was $1.49. Then prices started going up and Katrina hit and knocked out diesel refineries and never recovered.
I was always getting 43-45 mpg all the time.
I did look into the new Ford Fusion Hybrid. It is too Japanese. Yes I just said that on a Kawi forum. Atleast the Pissat is assembled in Tennessee.

I had a 1978 Diesel Rabbit. Got 57 mpg city or highway. Traded it away in 83. Wish I would have kept it. It's about time they are finally getting back to the kind of mileage they were capable of 35 years ago.

Only one place to get blue cow pee.
You gotta be nice to him first and give him a lil scratch on the head.

Just got home with the new Passat. What a great feeling ride. I love the handling VW has to offer. I thought I would miss my Charger more, but now I am like, What Charger. lol. I will get to take it out tomorrow for a real ride.
-
Welcome to the TDi Club ;D It only gets better and with the larger tank fuel stops will be few and far between. When I'm doing the driving I usually fill up between 580-610 miles per tank. And the transmission? So so so sweet.

Nice car! Did you get the DSG auto? Like Chet said, that's one sweet transmission! Don't change the oil till 10k miles (per the owner's manual) and if you don't do it yourself (I'm too anal to let the dealer do my 'free' oil changes) BE SURE that the dealer uses the correct VW spec 507 oil. Lots of dealers don't have a clue and have used the wrong oil in these TDis.
-
Thank you guys.
I got the 6 speed manual. I want to get as many mpg that I can. I believe the Passat uses a different motor oil than the Golf, Beetle, and Jetta tdis from what I have read. Due to the fluid injection it has. I still have a lot of research to do.

I have the sirius sat. I love it. I have a lifetime on a portable radio too. After the 3 months are up I'll let it go. Right before winter I'll add it again for $25 for 6 months. That is what I did with my Charger. I really do not need it all summer long. I'll be on the bike.
Thanks for the tdi info. I have looked on there quite a bit. I should join the forum again.

Yes. I have been with Sirius since 94 or so. I paid around $425 for lifetime membership in 95.

Congrats! I drove a rental Passat from Munich to Neuschwanstein and back once. Amazing how nice that car is at speed on the autobahn.
-

What do you mean by the regen?
-
Congrats! I drove a rental Passat from Munich to Neuschwanstein and back once. Amazing how nice that car is at speed on the autobahn.
Thanks Rhino! It has been a great ride so far. No regrets. It has a lot less odor from diesel than the 2003 Golf I used to own.
-
What do you mean by the regen?
The DPF (diesel particulate filter) regeneration. The Passat has this right?
-
That is the urea fluid spray. From what I have read it happens in 3rd or 4th gear when needed, but I have yet to feel anything out of the norm. I also only have around 400 miles on it now.

Holy crap C! You, or your wife, do a lot of driving. I only have around 12k on my Jetta now and it hasn't seen the dealer for anything. I'm hoping to keep it that way.
-
My Passat went in for a few things already. The heater overheated once and they could not figure out why. Trunk stopped opening up automatically and the rear door did not close properly.
A couple weeks after the dealer trip I had a huge antifreeze spill in the garage. I brought it in and they fixed something in the heater and replaced the radiator cover. It now has 4,000 miles on it. Just as my brother in law said. "It probably had an air pocket in the water liner before the thermostat and that is why the heater overheated and not the car.
Hopefully this doesn't continue.
-
Joel I sure as heck hope not, heck, I hope I go another 170,000 miles with less trouble than you have already had :o
C, I did a trip to Colorado Springs last year and with my retirement property 320+ miles away the Jetta gets used. I've got 600+ miles out of a tank several times, so long as SWMBO isn't driving ;)
I'm still loving the torque and the transmission is so unbeliveable ;D
-
Joel, so your dealer fixed one thing and screwed up another? From what I've read, that's typical.
So for far our Jetta has been flawless except for one thing. The sunroof. When it's hot outside the sunroof squeals when it's opened or closed. I bought some 'special' VW/Audi sunroof grease for it and I need to get out there and take care of it.
Yep, the DSG is amazing!
-
I do love the car and the 6-speed. I think it was just a little hiccup. It'll be great if I ever drive it again. I've been on the bike everyday.
-
Love my TDI. Simplicity of the ALH, torque and 700+ miles per tank. Gotta love it.

Oh boy...
Smells like a recall might be in the works for some TDIs.
Volkswagen Updating 2009-2012 TDI Cars to Prevent Potential Fueling Issues
http://wot.motortrend.com/volkswagen-updating-2009-2012-tdi-cars-to-prevent-potential-fueling-issues-369981.html#axzz2U2ZhhMoH (http://wot.motortrend.com/volkswagen-updating-2009-2012-tdi-cars-to-prevent-potential-fueling-issues-369981.html#axzz2U2ZhhMoH)
In an effort to prevent gasoline from being pumped into diesel-powered vehicles, Volkswagen will retrofit the fuel filler neck on certain TDI models. Damage caused by the wrong fuel isn’t covered under Volkswagen’s warranty policy. A notice was sent to dealers last week and the automaker will begin notifying customers of the service campaign on May 28, according to Automotive News.
The campaign affects 209,500 U.S. models and 51,600 vehicles in Canada including 2009-2012 Jetta sedans, 2010-2012 Golf hatchbacks, and 2009-2012 Jetta SportWagen/Golf Wagons. Volkswagen will install a misfueling guard and fuel filler neck that will only accept diesel nozzles. With the new parts installed, the fuel tank gate will remain closed if a smaller gasoline nozzle is installed. The parts will be installed for free and are already standard production for 2013-model-year TDI vehicles.
As sales of TDI models have increased, so has the number of complaints of stalled vehicles to the NHTSA. Volkswagen says that high-pressure fuel pump failures are due to gasoline being pumped into diesel fuel tanks. The agency has received 160 complaints and field reports related to the issue, many of them from the automaker. While the investigation hasn’t been upgraded to recall status, at this point it is considered an engineering analysis.
-
I like my 2013 even more now.
-
Wow. I guess it's VWs fault people can't figure out which nozzle to use >:( This little update, recall, or whatever they call it will end up costing future buyers, aint no way VW is just going to eat it. I think I will opt to not have the changes made, I like to fill er full and from what I just read it may not be possible...
Joel, is this "system" installed on the Passat? If so, anything awckward about it?
-
I won't be getting this 'update' installed either. I'm fully aware that my diesel car requires diesel fuel only and I've never found myself reaching for the RUG gas pump when I really meant to reach for the diesel pump. ::)
-
This isn't my car but this is what the 'update' looks like.

I think it's a good idea. More people are buying diesels these days. They need to make it more idiot proof..... And one of these days, someone (Conrad) is going to be distracted and try fill it with gas  . I know that I might make that mistake. Now they really need something to prevent me from putting diesel in my C14 tank.
-
That is one ugly piece and so unneeded. If I loaned my car out I would so be there, but I don't so I won't.

Nope, that will never happen to me Jimah. Not too many things can distract me to that extent. It would have to be a VERY good lookin scantily clad woman walking past and in that case I wouldn't be pumping diesel or gas... ;)

+1 I don't lend my vehicles out to anyone, nor would I ever borrow someone else's. My wife and I are the only people who drive our vehicles and she never fuels them, not in 36 years of marriage.

I read the notification. It said the 2013s had the fix. Mine doesn't look like an erector set kit that was posted. Mine looks German/Tennessee. I think it is fine and the way it should be. I never had a 2012 though. I can see how people could forget and put the wrong stuff in. Especially when I let my wife drive it when I take the bike to work. EVERYDAY!!!! I just keep it full for her.
-
Smart move on your part.
-
I would never want to see that repair bill.
She loves the TDI compared to the Durango. We weed a six passenger when we all go somewhere, so we will keep it until Volkswagen makes their six passenger Diesel Hybrid about two years from now. I hope it is nice.

Just picked up an Audi S4 w/Sirius free for like three months..
I'm pissed because the MLB package isn't available don't think I can get Sixx Sense either.. >:(

I just traded my 2013 black Passat in for a 2014 blue Passat. The black one matched my 2011 and the blue one matches my 2010. I never thought about it until it was in the garage. They are giving great deals on these right now. And the trade in value on the tdis are great. They updated the 2014s with standard backup camera and an Onstar type setup for VWs.

Sorry I missed this Mike. The secret isn't such a secret but here you go. When your free 'preview' is about up you'll have to call Sirius and tell them that you'd like to continue with their service but not at the price they're asking. Tell them that you want the $25 for 6 months deal. You will have to be firm and threaten to cancel the service. Hold strong and you WILL get the 6 month deal. You'll have to call them and do the same thing each time you're up for renewal but they will give you that price. If they balk, tell them that you're happy to stream Pandora on your cell phone (even if you don't) for music in your car, they hate Pandora!
-
Used the value of the $1000 gift card to get to that price. Was at $25,695. These cars are so nice. I almost picked one up for the wife. She is still chugging gas down in the Hemi Durango.
I got Sirius in my last car only for the winter $20 for 5 months. Nice and cheap.

I like them a lot. I put 21,000 miles on the 2013 before trading it. Someone will love finding that car. Not too many used tdis with low miles on them.

Love my TDI. Simplicity of the ALH, torque and 700+ miles per tank. Gotta love it.
Yes, I'm in that camp too. ALH engines and 5 speed manual trannys. A 2001 and 2003 Jetta TDIs and I've managed a few 900+ mile tanks. Both have a lifetime average of over 50 mpg since I've owned them. Done extensive work on them both. The '01 was a salvaged car that needed to be re-engined due to the block (and other things) being broken in a rollover and the '03 was bought after the prior owner drove it until the TB broke (twice the recommended service interval). Some serious head/valve refurbishing and a complete TB system put it back on the road.
Hard to not love cars that get lower cost per mile than the Connie.
Thanks to Conrad for the invite to check out this forum and find a few more Concours and TDI owners.

Glad to have you here in spite of owning a Jetta! I'm really going to have to talk to C..

Exactly.
Thankfully, I have no VW dealership within almost 100 miles of me, so I'm not tempted or lured into the "service" department.
Although, we did buy the wife's new/used Avalon at a VW dealership. That's the most time I've ever spent in one.:o

Really?? A Prius?? An HP Prius? Definitely not "High Performance" and yet he rides a C14?
He is a troubled man, I see.
Now I suppose I will have to put him on my "Ignore" list. Wouldn't want that sort of disorder affecting my current list of mental maladies.

Still in love with my Jetta, although my GS does better in the MPG arena. If only the tires lasted as long...

HP obviously denotes half power since we are talking about a Prius.

Wrongo, but good guess.

Must be something about this time of year. I just traded in the 2014 Blue TDI in on a 2015 Black TDI. They have an extra 10 hp this year at lower rpm. Not much more in changes. Just new car smell. I was going to get the brownish red color to match the new 2012 Concours I just got, but they went to a brighter red.

What model did you get and how much did they give you on your trade, if you don't mind me asking?
-
I have been buying the base model Passat tdi se 6 speed. Right now they are offering $4000 off sticker price. $24,200. I could've gotten one for $23,880, but they didn't have the right color in that package. So I got the splash guards, wheel locks, cargo organizer, and first aid kit for the extra $300. He got my trade to $20,800. 0.9 % for 5 years again.
The new cars only have one scheduled service included. The last 2 offered two. I picture the tires needing replacement at about 30,000 miles and have yet to get up that far to know for certain. I also haven't bothered trying out the Auto transmission because of the higher cost for 40,000 mile service. I just haven't been that high on the clock yet. I have seen these used with 130,000-150,000 miles and they are still pricing them over $10,000.
I wish they offered the Fender sound system on the base models. It is the only option that I would really like to have added on.

Sounds like you got a good deal! I've had the dealership where I bought my Jetta contact me twice, telling me how badly they need my used car and would I please trade it in on a new car.
I also got the splash guards, wheel locks, cargo organizer, and first aid kit with my Jetta. I just spent $15 buying the lug nut kit to do away with the wheel locks. Those things are a pain in the butt! When was the last time you've heard of someone ripping off the wheels from a VW? If you misplace the 'key' to those locks you will be in a serious bind!

That's a gimmick, they were telling me that on my 05 Prius, and it had nearly 300k miles on it.. Yeah, right. You need that car badly.

Good idea on the lug nuts. I do have the regular ones. I might do that at some point. The low mileage tdis are wanted, because no one trades them besides me.

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2015/11/exclusive-volkswagen-to-announce-tdi-goodwill-program-next-week/ (http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2015/11/exclusive-volkswagen-to-announce-tdi-goodwill-program-next-week/)
Volkswagen of America, in a bid to regain the trust of current diesel owners, will announce a prepaid card campaign on November 9, TTAC has learned.
The program, detailed to dealers Thursday in preparation of its public announcement, is aimed at current owners of affected TDI models regardless of whether they bought their car new or used.
Two prepaid cards will be offered to those TDI owners. The first one will be for $500 and has no restrictions on where it can be used. The second, which may be valued between $500 and $750, will be limited to use at Volkswagen dealerships.
According to our tipster, owners of affected models will need to visit their local Volkswagen dealership with proof of vehicle ownership to activate the prepaid cards.
Owners can find out if they qualify for the “TDI Goodwill Program” by going to www.vwdieselinfo.com (http://www.vwdieselinfo.com) and doing a VIN lookup on or after November 9. If they qualify, owners will then be asked to register to receive updates regarding future developments on their diesel vehicles.
The program is expected to apply only to four-cylinder diesels for now, though it could be expanded to 3-liter V-6 diesels later.
Representatives for Volkswagen of America could not be reached for comment.
The additional cash could be a plus for those looking to stay with the brand but get away from their diesel cars. Volkswagen announced October 31 that they would subsidize dealers to take in TDI vehicles on trade at pre-crisis valuations, on top of a $2,000 TDI owner loyalty discount announced October 2.

Interesting,
Given all the pending litigation (class action types), I wonder if part of accepting the cards is agreeing not to be part of the various actions? If so, it's likely deep in the fine print. I'm generally not a fan of class action lawsuits as they tend to be a money grab for the law firm and do little for the actual consumer. I've already received and ignored letters from three law firms. May be interesting to see what falls out from all this but more often than not, lawyers will get richer and the EPA will collect huge fines.

It looks as if the rumors are true,
"Owners can find out if they qualify for the “TDI Goodwill Program” by going to www.vwdieselinfo.com (http://www.vwdieselinfo.com) and doing a VIN lookup on or after November 9. If they qualify, owners will then be asked to register to receive updates regarding future developments on their diesel vehicles."
VW says no strings attached.

Are they having a buyback program?
No one knows what's going to happen yet G. VW is still working on this. Some of our politicians are calling for a buyback where VW pays us what we paid for the cars. I'd go along with that! Drive the car for 4 years and get all my money back. :)
Here's a copy of my Goodwill Package confirmation letter.
Thank you for requesting the Goodwill Package and signing up to receive communications regarding the 2.0L TDI emissions issue.
Your registration code is xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Volkswagen is committed to finding a remedy as soon as possible. We would like to emphasize that the EPA has noted that vehicles affected by this issue are legal and safe to drive, and we are working to develop a remedy that will meet the expectations of the government agencies.
Within 4 weeks you should receive your Goodwill Package materials. You will need these, along with additional verification items, in order to activate the Goodwill Package at participating Volkswagen dealerships. I too took advantage of the $1000 + plan. There does seem to be some fine print involved. It is pretty hard to find it though. It was in the card acceptance information. Even though the CEO said that you could take the deal and still sue them. I decided to accept the money and just see how it plays out.

I signed up for the $1000+ plan as well.
The 'fine print' appears to apply to the use of the 'gift card' and seems to be standard. I can't imagine that VW would 'pull another fast one' with the world watching.

Yep, who knows how long this is all gonna take.
In the meantime, my Jetta has a rear wheel bearing going out. The dash on our Jetta is lit up like a Christmas tree. Errors for the stability control, the ABS, the air bag, and the TPS system along with the noise from the bearing. I connected my laptop up to the Jetta via the VAGCOM cable that I have and the thing told me where the issues are coming from, right rear wheel. All of those systems rely on data from the speed sensor and the sensor reads the tire rotation from the bearing (I already replaced the sensor). I now have all the parts and tools I need to replace the bearing and I'll be doing that this weekend. It's going to be a bear since the axle bolt gets torqued to 150 lb-ft PLUS 180 degrees. :o

caliper to carrier (counterhold to keep from spinning) 35 NM REPLACE
caliper carrier (XZN 14 bolt) 90 NM plus 90 degrees. REPLACE
little screw/bolt that holds the disk on. 4 NM
rear axle bolt (XZN 18) 200 NM plus 180 degrees REPLACE
The axle bolt should be torqued to 200 NM and then the tire gets reinstalled, then remove the jack stands/jack so that the cars weight is on the tire. Then the bolt is tightened the additional 180 degrees. Of course the car will have to be jacked up again and the tire removed so that the new dust cap and the brake caliper can be reinstalled. :o

Not this time I'm afraid.

I finally replaced the ailing bearing yesterday. All went well and after clearing the error codes my dash is no longer lit up like a Christmas tree and the bearing noise is gone.
The hardest part of the whole thing for me was torqueing the caliper carrier bolts (because of the clearance issue) and getting the damn new dust cover on.
When I pulled the old bearing out it was plain to see that it had a big problem. The big axle bolt was covered in oil and so was the bearing. There was a lot of play on the outside portion of the bearing as well.
Next!
-
Are you going to do the other side?
-
Are you going to do the other side?
I should but since it's fine and not making any noise or causing any error codes I'll leave it alone for now. I have under 40k miles on the odo and there was no reason for the bearing to be going out so early anyway. I'm thinking that it was just a fluke with the bad bearing having some kinda manufacturing defect.

Is that the side all the exhaust pollutants is pouring out of?
-
Is that the side all the exhaust pollutants is pouring out of?
No, that would be the left side. The extra NOX emissions is keeping the other one protected when in reverse.
That is very low miles for a wheel bearing failure. Glad you got it fixed. I've never replaced a wheel bearing in any of the VW fleet yet. Brake pads and rotors, plenty of those, mostly from corrosion.
Diesel fuel prices locally took a $.25/gal drop over the weekend. I suppose the extremely mild winter and the crude price dropping below $40/barrel is making its way to the diesel market. Finally.
-
Looks like a lot of work for a low mileage car.
Diesel prices are looking sweet. I've been paying $2.169 per gallon. It is actually quite bit cheaper to drive my car than ride the bike.

Yes, diesel prices are closing the gap on gasoline some lately. Price of crude oil dropped below $40/barrel and with the warm winter so far fuel supplies continue to increase even more. The price dropped about $.25/gal locally and while it's still about $.30 more than gas my cost per mile is still less to drive the diesel VW than the C10. And with the winter season the bike stays parked anyways.

Just lucky I guess? :( In the 40 years that I've owned vehicles this is the first time that I've had to replace a wheel bearing. The right front in my 03 Silverado has a lot of play in it (no noise or vibration yet though) so I guess that one is next. At least there's more room to work on that thing.

I received my 'goodwill' package today from VW. Just as advertised. A $500 gift card to spend anywhere, a $500 VW card to spend at the dealership (I'm thinking tires), and the 3 year 24/7 roadside assistance stuff. I have to visit a VW dealer in order for the offers to be activated. They wanna see the car with proof that I'm the owner and then I can spend the dough.

I have been seeing their combo- [ Holiday / Save the Company] ads lately: $0 down, $0 first month, $0 interest and $0 something else. A 'sign and drive' deal. I am seriously considering buying one of those things.... the only consideration left is how much the monthly payments are. Anybody have any idea of the approximate amount that they send you monthly after buying one?
:rotflmao: Three times.

Some folks that live in California are having issues renewing the registrations on their VW diesels because of this mess.

If you live in a state that doesn't have exhaust check every year they might be a really good buy right now. Or better yet, go to CA where there might be a problem registering it, make low ball offer and bring it back to a state like TX. ;)

I'm pretty sure that it's going to be a federal issue and that all the registered VW diesels will have to be 'fixed'.

I loved my 78 diesel Wabbit. Max speed was about 80 mph but it got 57 mpg in town. I put an aux tank in the spare tire well for a total of 20 gal and drove it once from San Jose CA to Grants NM without stopping for fuel.

I got my Goodwill package in the mail too. It looks like accepting this limits your ability to sue them. You can only go through arbitration in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. So I am still hoping that they also make up the difference that the car values lost after all this. Approaching $3000 at this point.

I'm pretty sure that the standard language in fine print you're talking about refers to the terms of use for the credit card.
First line of the fine print.
"Affected customers eligible for the Goodwill Package are not required to waive their rights or release their claims against Volkswagen in order to receive the package."

I hope so. April 21st is the new deadline. Some have mentioned they may be ordered to buy them all back. Hopefully for better than ACV/ Bluebook values like Dodge Rams just offered last year. My Bluebook value took about a $6000 hit compared to the other cars I had. I was trading them in every year. This year wasn't doable.

Finally!!!!
As of yesterday the word is out on what's going to happen with VW diesels.
If your car is effected the first thing to do is to find the numbers here.
https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/att._1a_-_buyback_modification_table.pdf (https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/att._1a_-_buyback_modification_table.pdf)
Then you go here to find out what your mileage adjustment is.
https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/cases-proceedings/162-3006/volkswagen-group-america-inc (https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/cases-proceedings/162-3006/volkswagen-group-america-inc)
The two choices are, keep your car along with some cash from VW and wait for a fix that will degrade the cars performance (no one knows how much as the fix is still in the works). Or you can sell it back to VW.
For my car after running the numbers (if I did the calculations right). 2012 Jetta Sportwagen w/nav & sunroof, DSG ~ 41k miles. If I keep the car and wait for a fix, VW will pay me $6,500. If I sell it back to VW they'll pay me $24k.
What would you do? I'm leaning toward selling it back.

I wonder if that emissions scandal by VW has been put to bed yet.....?
I actually do the blanking for the entire VW Polo for a living. Don't know if you guys in the States know it....They are bringing out a new model next year, and I don't even wanna know how much that is gonna go for...
Being right next door to the GM factory, for whom I also do some blanking, I'm an Isuzu man myself. Diesel of course...
Personally I think the VW is overpriced and overrated. (Might just get a smack from Kwakrider on this one, as he works for VW....)

I would sell it back to them for $24K.
I think after the "fix" (which I suppose you have to agree to if you keep it) the mileage and performance won't be what you are accustomed to/expect, and with many gasser mileage ratings approaching the possible expected post fix result I think you can drive a long time with a newer gas powered vehicle from a lot of different brands.
On the older side of things, my tank averages for the 2001 TDI since March have been all over 52 mpg and most at or approaching 55 mpg. The 2003 conversion/transplant project (TDI into a 1.8T chassis) hasn't gotten much attention the last several months. I intend to keep them going as long as possible, but corrosion will be the life ending factor barring another major accident.
There are so many more interesting choices for diesel powered vehicles across the pond(s).

What would it bluebook for if there wasn't a problem? What did it cost new?
I'll have to dig out my paperwork to see what I paid for this thing. The prices for the buyback come from September of last year, right before the **** hit the fan on the emissions scandal, plus an additional cash payout from VW for 'pain and suffering'.
I'm almost positive that I'll sell it back to VW. Looks like I have some car shopping to do.

I dug out my paperwork on the Jetta.
2012 Jetta TDI Sportwagen W/DSG, Nav, and Sunroof. Took delivery 12/22/11 (factory order ~two months prior) $28,625 plus TTL. By the time Fall rolls around I will have had the car for almost 5 years and I'll only take a ~$5k hit on selling it back. Not too bad. :)

Yep, we did. $500 gift card spendable anywhere (spent), $500 VW gift card spendable at a VW dealer only (not spent), and 3 years 24/7 roadside assistance. I'm not sure what I'll do with the $500 VW card. VW isn't out of the running as a replacement for the Jetta though.

The more I look in to it, the more I am being convinced to take full advantage of this buyback program. It seems you will have until May 2018 to accept the buyback. I don't think you can find a cheaper vehicle to put the miles on right now. They will deduct for excessive mileage, but at a pretty low fee. About $6200 every 100,000 miles over typical driving (1042 per month from ownership) for a Jetta. About $7800 for every 100,000 miles on my Passat.
-
I may drive my Jetta for a while yet and not jump right in and sell it back at the soonest opportunity. It costs very little to drive it for a while yet so why not?
As for a replacement, I'm leaning towards a small SUV or crossover. I like the Suby Crosstrek but my wife insists on a auto trans and the CVT paired with the anemic 2l engine is just not gonna cut it for me. Maybe a Mazda CX5 or a Suby Forester (cept that they're so damn ugly).

Same situation here, VW Jetta TDI is the wife's driver (manual trans). We live about 30 miles out and 1.5 is gravel that gets very sloppy with rain (yes, I hate the gravel but it was a necessary evil) so an AWD is in the cards for our next vehicle. Also looking at the same vehicles as you are; haven't driven them yet but luckily my better half is good with a manual trans so we are leaning to the Subaru.
My current winter/beater/save miles on my tow vehicle driver is a Subaru Baja and even though I thought I would dislike it it's been a great car/truck and even hauls most things I would usually have to take my truck for. If they may a new one it would be at the top of the list.
Darn, I'm getting old. Practical cars at the top of my list.... what a shame.....

Well, I'm considering a rebellion (on my practicality).
When we moved to Colorado, we stored the wife's daily driver at the time due to the long commute and the gravel road but I'm considering resurrecting it as a daily driver. Not practical but.... much more fun. It's a 2001 Z28 6sp LS1 with a few performance and breaking mods with only 60k on the clock.
Thinking about the Camaro as a summer and nice winter driver, my Baja and truck (Dodge 4x4 cummins) as bad weather drivers. If we go this route the funds from VW buyback could go to our next project car. I'm just about finished with the 71 El Camino (pro touring/street machine light type build); next up is a full nut and bolt tear down and build on our 69 Camaro. We have been buying parts for it for quite a while but lots still to go so the buy back would make huge strides.

Well, this one has been trouble free with the sole exception of a failed fuel pump so naturally it received an complete fuel system upgrade, complete larger in-tank pump to rails and injectors. Hard to beat being as a fun and reasonably powered (in the ballpark of 350hp at the wheels) daily driver, it routinely pulls down 28 on the highway got to love the T56 with double overdrive. It's just not good in gravel or snow; ok, call it horrible in snow but that is not it's intended environment so I'll give it a pass on that.
Funny thing is I expected to get some guff about my POS Subaru.........

The judge didn't sign off on the details of the settlement on the 18th as scheduled. Now the date is Oct 25th. >:(
I've changed my mind on what vehicle I'm going to buy to replace the Jetta Sportwagen TDI. Gonna get a 2017 VW Golf Sportwagen SE. We really like our old Jetta and the new Golfs really are nice. Plus the Golf is almost $6k less than the Mazda and I can use the $500 VW Good Will cash that I have left towards the new V-Dub.
Since I'm getting $24k back from VW on the buyback I'll only have to kick in ~$1.5k to get the new car. Not bad, drove the TDI for 5 years and get to replace it with a new very similar car for $1.5k.

 Are you getting the All track?
I test drove one and it's REALLY nice. That's what got me thinking about sticking with VW. No, not getting one though. I really don't need AWD or the off road capability of that car. Plus it has a TON of bells and whistles that can break and it's about the same price at the Mazda CX-5. I'd rather not spend the extra dough on stuff I don't need.
-
Any tow package on this one?
-
No tow package and I haven't seen any specs on the towing capacity of the Golf. I'm thinking that towing is probably a no go with the Golf. When I tow the trailer I'll just use my pick-up or the RV.
-
I hadn't heard of the VW Alltrack before. They do look nice. I own 6 vehicles and all of them are either 4WD or 1WD. I could see this as a replacement for my wife's Ford Escape. But I would want it in a diesel TDI ;)

The Alltrack is really nice! VW is calling it their Subaru killer. You won't be seeing a TDI version in this county, you can count on that!

I've changed my mind again and I'm back on the Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring. I asked myself which one do I really want and my answer was the Mazda.
-
On Saturday I received the formal offer from VW to buy back my Jetta. They offered me just a lil over $24k for it. I had to print out the documents, sign and have them notarized, and then scan and upload to the VW claims portal. All done and accepted. Now I wait for VW to offer me a range of days and times for me to take the car to the local VW dealer for the final time and get my money.
-
Woohoo!
I have the appointment all set up for the VW buyback on 11/29. :)
-
Make sure that their money is real...
-
So that's about the end of that ordeal.

Make sure that their money is real...
Don't worry, I won't except any paper money that has Mickey Mouse or Donald Trump's pictures on it.
-
So that's about the end of that ordeal.
Pretty much. About all that's left is to sell my VCDS, a few filters, and some oil to someone who can use it. Know anyone like that? ;)

What about this guy? I have lots of stuff with this guy on it.

Sure thing! I'll sell you a car.

Perfect! I don't always play monopoly but when I do, I want to be the car... because there is neither a motorcycle or an airplane and who the hell wants to be a thimble?

:rotflmao: You guys kill me..

No, sorry. Don't know anybody close by with a TDI. Have VCDS. Different filters in my old ALH cars and I'm using Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 oil in the TDIs and the Honda St1300.
Although, I do know a few VW gasser owners around here that don't have VCDS and should have so I will ask, but since they know I have it it might be a tough sell.

Thanks. I'd let the VCDS go for a good price. There's probably a glut of these on the market right about now.

bit of an inside joke
Hitler finds out it will take longer than expected to get his VW TDI buyback

It's done.
I sold our 2012 VW Jetta Sportwagan back to VW on 11/29/16
My co-owner wife and I show up at the local VW dealership a bit early, 3:15 (appointment was for 3:30). No buyback specialists in sight. The salesman there tells me that they are out getting something to eat and that they won't be back till later because the next buyback appointment isn't till 6:30. WHAT?!
I show the salesman the e-mail that says my appointment is at 3:30 today. He phones the buyback dude and tells him what's happening. Buyback dude heads back to the dealership asap. Shows up at 4:00.
Buyback dude tells me that his next appointment isn't till 6:30. I show him my e-mail. He makes some calls and gets nowhere. He doesn't have my claim number and can't find my name on any lists. Fortunately I have the claim number. He locates my info with that.
Ah, there's my name. Appointment for 11/29/16 @ 3:30. Um, yeah.
Buyback dude looks over our paperwork, everything looks good. We go out to the Jetta and he takes some pics and checks the odo. Mileage looks good at 46,525 he says that we'll get the full amount stated in my formal offer from VW.
We go back inside and he enters the numbers on his tablet. So far so good, till I see the amount due to us. $23,626.73 WHAT?!
My formal offer letter from VW says $24,076.73. So where did the $450 go? My mileage is under the allotted amount so what gives? The buyback dude didn't have a clue. He called the claims number and put his phone on speaker. Then we waited, and waited. I told him no way was I going to wait for who knows how long for someone to answer. We'd already been there for an hour and a half. I said that I would call them in the morning from home, when I can wait at my leisure. He finished up and gave me a paper receipt. I checked my e-mail and I also got a e-mail receipt, nothing more.
I then waited two days before calling the Claims Hotline. I wanted to make sure that the buyback funds made it into my checking account via EFT before I started complaining about the amounts being different.
Waited ~25 minutes on hold, listening to the same 30 second classical musak clip over and over and over...
Hey, is that Wagner?
I think that VW's plan was to make folks mad, or go mad, with this musak till they hang up.
Spoke with a real person for about 30 seconds. I explained to Bethany that the amount on my final offer letter and the amount that I actually received differ by $450. I'm back on hold, no musak thank goodness, waiting while she checks...
Oh boy, Bethany knows nothing, nothing! (the people on this hotline are from a 3rd party company that was contracted to do the buybacks and their training leave a bit to be desired)
She first told me that the reason that my payout was less than my offer letter was because of the damage to my car. WTF? My car was in perfect condition and I have the pics to prove it, so do the 'buyback specialists'. Besides, the payout amount was already determined before I even arrived for my buyback appointment.
She's checking...
After an hour on the claims hotline, mostly on hold listening to my now favorite 30 seconds of Wagner...
Spoke with Shera, who is a supervisor, who also knows nothing. She told me to go back to the dealership for restitution. WHAT?! I told her that the dealer is just acting as a physical location for the buyback and they have no stake in it. Worse, they don't care because they're not making any money on their time.
Now I'm told that my case has been escalated to the next level and that I should hear something in 3 days. I'm not holding my breath...
I asked if there was another number that I can call to speak with whoever my case was escalated to once the three days has passed and I hear nothing?
Um, no. Call the claims hotline back.
Oh good, I'm already missing that snappy 30 second musak clip.
Nice.
-
So in the end you get jerked around for the 450? Must be the third party contractor's fee. >:(
-
So in the end you get jerked around for the 450? Must be the third party contractor's fee. >:(
I'm not the only (former) VW owner that this is happening to. There are several folks over at the TDI club forum that had a higher amount promised on their formal offer letter only to receive a smaller amount at the buyback. No explanations at all.

Crazy way to treat a customer, makes you wonder how they manage to get outa bed in the morning

With the money they are stealing they probably have the maid wake them.

In that 'special' way... :P

:rotflmao:

So the maid is getting the same treatment you vw owners are getting. I wonder who's enjoying it more. ::)
-
I have an Audi, so should I expect the same ;)
-
You have a maid?
-
I see what you did there Jim ;) ;D

Do you have a TDI? The Audi not the maid.

Yes I do, ...the Audi that is (Q3) ;)

Interesting. I still have my 2015 Passat tdi. I went in to the dealer for an informational seminar. I think we ate $450 worth of food, soda, and donuts. lol.
It was interesting. They showed us their newest offerings. lol. All these tdi owners aren't looking at the gassers, but they tried.
I learned that I can pretty much part out the car and as long as it still can drive itself in to the lot, it is worth the buyback offer as long as you stay within the mileage allowance. Any mile above is about $0.07 per mile. Not too bad considering.
I am not in too much of a hurry. I have until September 2018 to do the buyback or the fix. That will give me time to figure out whether to do the buyback or the fix. They are not sure yet if the buyback money is taxable, or if you might get a 1099 in the mail from VW.

I'm not sure why there is a question of the buyback money being taxable or not. If you sold a car to an individual would that money be taxable? No, same thing here.

Dieselgate 2.0?

Another 'rogue' programmer or the same guy from VW with a new job?
-
A guy's got to make a living.
-
I suspect there would be others added to the list if they got real serious about looking at more live data vs the dyno runs.

Just when we thought it was over...
$350 more? (according to the e-mail I received) I'll take it! :)
https://www.boschvwsettlement.com/en (https://www.boschvwsettlement.com/en)
A $327.5 million settlement has been reached with Bosch, the supplier of the emissions software that was installed in some 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche diesel vehicles. The Bosch Settlement follows similar settlements with Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche (called the “2.0-liter Settlement” and the “3.0-liter Settlement”, or together, the “VW Settlements”).
The Bosch Settlement is in addition to the VW Settlements and provides additional compensation to vehicle owners, former owners, lessees and former lessees, including reseller dealers, who filed or will file approved claims in the VW Settlements. The Bosch Settlement also provides the opportunity for compensation to VW Class Members who opted out of or who are otherwise not participating in the VW Settlements.
If you filed or choose to file a claim in the VW Settlements, you do not need to file a claim in the Bosch Settlement. If your VW Settlement claim is approved, you will automatically receive a check in the mail from the Bosch Settlement.
If you do not file a claim in the VW Settlements, or if you chose to opt-out of either or both of them, you still can file a separate claim in the Bosch Settlement.
If you have excluded yourself from the VW Settlements, you can still file a claim in the Bosch Settlement until August 15, 2017. If you are an Eligible Seller and missed the Identification Deadline in the 2.0-liter Settlement, or if you are an Eligible Former Owner and do not file a claim in the 3.0-liter Settlement, you have until May 1, 2017 to file a claim in the Bosch Settlement. If you do not file a claim in either of the VW Settlements, you can still file a claim in the Bosch Settlement until December 31, 2019.
Please Note: The following diesel engine vehicles (“Eligible Vehicles”) are included in the Bosch Settlement:

My Ducati has a Bosch ECU. I've been told the fuel map for the dealer installed Termignoni (spelling?) exhaust was built into the ecu and is dealer activated by code. I wonder it it meets the EPA requirements or if they, like Harley, are claiming it's only for track.
-
Did you get a special RED KEY with the Duc?
-
Let's see. $350 is just about what Steve's evo flash costs. Coincidence? I think not. :)
-
-
Did you get a special RED KEY with the Duc?
Actually yes. It's the equivalent of the passive FOB on the C14 and required if you loose your FOB to be able to register a new FOB with the ECU. But the Duc has a nice feature. You can register a pin code that can start the bike. You still need a real key to open the gas cap and the bags but the pin code can be used to ride the bike indefinitely. So I'm having another key cut to hide on the bike just for the gas and bags. That way I can be on a trip and loose the FOB and still be able to ride and wait until I get home to get a new FOB.

They are allowing the VW diesels to be sold again. I am going to buy 2 2015 Passat TDIs and make them do the buyback of my current 2015 Passat TDI. Pretty interesting programs out there right now. $5,000 off and 0% for 6 years. One dealer actually gave me $7,000 off.
