Title: Significant heat wave likely next week.
Post by: Conrad on July 14, 2011, 09:14:30 AM
A large area of hot and humid air across the southern U.S. is forecast by
all the computer models and objective guidance to spread across at least
30 states by this weekend. Within this airmass, a considerable area of
dangerous heat is likely to set up across a significant portion of the
central and southern United States. This heat is
currently forecast to last through almost the entire week.

In the red outlined area, heat indicies during the afternoon are expected to be 100 degrees or higher during the forecast period.

In these graphics below, areas in brown/tan are heat indicies forecast to be
between 100 and 105 degrees, while areas in pink are forecast to be
between 105 and 120 degrees.

While the forecast only goes through next week, guidance suggests this
could last through next weekend. There might be a short, modest break with
the heat on Tuesday, when a weak cold front passes into the area. But that
goes back north as a warm front on Wednesday, and all indications are that
we stay hot the rest of the week.

My heart goes out to ya!  I like my white and teal colored Pacific Northwet!  I'll take mild year round vs extremes any day.  I laugh at rain ;D  3 years in Savanah, and 3 years in MD.  I dont recall losing anything there so I have no need to return.

I had to put on a robe last evening as I headed to the hot tub!!!!!!!!!!!  We are always looking for staunch conservative minded folks out west, come on out and join us, it's a six person tub with a view of the lake and the wood duck duckilings are just getting reay to leave the nest, same for the swallows.  Lots of tent space and an open fire pit to stay warm in the evening :)

That sounds great!

A robe you say? You poor thing!

I had to replace the heater in my hot tub last week, $200 later and she's up to 102 again. Sounds like if I had waited till next week I could have gone without the heater.

It's worse than it used to be, not the weather, ME.

I used to complain but I could stump around slowly in the heat all day, get stuff done. I've been in the hot lowcountry of SC and GA all my life.
Now...I can't take it like I used to. Heck I'm still in my 30's and I take care of myself, what gives?! I actually can't stand it all day like I used to, now I have to come inside and take a break every hour or so.

As much as I love being able to ride all winter, I'm beginning to think about living in a higher elevation....

Still waiting for it to get up to 70 degrees here on the Peninsula.  As I recall, the American pioneers got to Wichita, took a good long look, and kept going.  There was more than one reason for that. ;D

Like GeeBeav said, here in South Texas we have already been there. According to KSAT Weather we have now had 12 days of 100° days. For the year we have had about 4 inches of rain. We would normally have 12-13 inches by now. Add in that we had very little rain since Sept. We are probably about 13-14 inches behind since Sept. Medina Lake is around 30 ft. below average. In 2009 we set a record of something like 55 days of 100° or more. But even if we don't actually hit 100° we have had many days of 99°. For the next 8 days we are forecast to have four 100° days, two 99° and two 98° days.

That's not good news for me and a large group of people.  The weekend of the 23rd I am volunteering as a motorcycle road marshal for the local MS bike 150 fundraiser.  Over 600 people ride 150 miles on their bicycles to raise monies for the MS Society.  As a marshal I'll be riding in full gear over the 2 days setting up traffic stops along the route and riding back and forth through the bike pack to offer assistance as needed. It'll be a hot weekend for all involved.

I got a quick ride in this morning to break in the new tahrs after my Colorado trip last week.  Heat index only got to 107 today.  After today...really freaking inhumane; excessive heat warning now in effect for the next WEEK.  Never seen that before...why did I come home??

Getting brutal just in time for younger daughter to go to summer camps, wife & older kid to go volunteer in Joplin, etc.  Oh, and HS marching band camp to start up for me in 2 weeks.  Oy.

What's your Dew Point and Humidity like? The dew point in Ia has been over 70% the last few days. When it gets over 70% Hell feels like it has AC.
Edit: I just checked the weather. Its 2:50am 80* with 81% humidity. By noon tomorrow you will be able to go outside and take a BIG 'OL drink of air  :(

It does kinda vary but looking the the weather tick in my sig right now it is 78%. It has been pretty humid though. In the morning, when I drive my truck, I usually have to turn the side vents off to keep from fogging my side windows and I have to turn on the rear window defrost.

We here in the Ohio Valley are already under a "Heat" advisory for the beginning of the week. And around here when the humidty hits that 65 deg. dew point, we usually get to dodge lightining, hale, and falling trees, not to mention the stray Tornado or two.
Ahhh, summer in Ohio, we can get 4 seasons in one afternoon. But then again, we are round on the ends, and hi in the middle.
Everyone ride safe, and watch that weather.

Y'all ever thought about moving somewhere not so hot like Floriduh? Just kidding, I think. Standard June through September forecast here is high in the lo-mid 90's, lows in the lo-mid 70's. Dew point lo-mid 70's. That being said, our dew points are going to plummet into the lo to mid 60's this week, gonna feel like autumn. There is a tropical disturbance nearby in the Atlantic, usually when we get onna those in that location, our dew points drop. Maybe gonna have to turn on the heat, getting down to 70 on Tues a.m.

Good Luck, y'all. That's some brutal stuff out there. I've got a super slab burn to MN in a coupla weeks, hoping things break by then.

4 seasons??  You lucky sob.  In Iowa we have three; Hot clod and rainy.
Good call on the dodging part, the 'experts' say that it is too darn hot to storm.  Sorta like its 'too cold to snow' try and explain that to some people  :loco: :loco:

All joking aside, stay hydrated, and best of luck on getting some relief.

I'm a glass half full kinda guy, only way I would tolerate that kinda heat is by remembering what the guys/gals deployed are experiencing, complete with all equipment, and lots of things that go boom.  I lived in Savanah for 3 years and 3 years in Aberdeen MD, I dont understand how any of you stand the kinda weather you have.  I'll keep my rain and mostly mild year round weather.  I have snow withing a coupla hours and desert like 2 hours past that.  We have a zoo aka Seattle for those who like the city life and lots of outdoor activities.  Some of the best riding in the nation that havent been discovered by the masses, and we get to do it year round.  I always get a kick out of the "What do you do for winter storage" threads.

Again, be well, stay covered, and avoid those caffinated drinks!

I'm with you there, things can always get worse. And wait, they did. The AC in my building is down and we're up to 96 with an index of 115.

The hvac guys are on it though, they're union, so there'll be one guy working on it while 3 or 4 stand around and watch.

Fairweather rider, eh? ;)
Our weather forecast is for a high of 68 and a chance of sunbreaks.  I'll be on the East side of the State next week, lots of sun, temps in the mid 80's, low humidity, and a nice cooling breeze.  I'll take a dip down in the lake to help cool down ;D
I just cant help but wonder why so many live in regions that are so extreme in the weather department, if it aint heat, it's snow, if it aint snow, it's wind and all the things that go with it.  We have rain.  I'll keep it over all the rest.

Yeah, that's me a fair weather rider.   8)  I have to be near Chicago this afternoon, if it wasn't for the stop and go traffic that I know I'm going to hit on the way back, I would have ridden the bike. I didn't relish the thought of sitting at all those stop lights with the fans kicking on while I bake in my jacket and helmet.

I can't speak for the rest of the guys but I stay here cuz it's where my job and my family are. I love the changing of the seasons and in the winter, it's time to get the sleds out!

During 2011, the Seattle area has had just 78 minutes of summer which a meterologist defined as the amount of time the temp was 80F and above. And if the calculation is based on amount of time the temp has been at or above 75 the answer is....18 hrs and 48 minutes, woohoo!!! :-\

On the bright side, moto riding has been great with cooler temps and minimal rain.   ;)
And during the summer if we want heat and dry wind we head over the Cascades to eastern WA about 90 minutes away from Seattle.

Here in Saint Joseph MI we usally don't get it as hot due in part to cooling winds from Lake MI but dang if it ain't HOT up here. It was still 93 degree F at 21:00 (9:PM) last night. Supposed to have another day of the same. I went out to the garage early yesterday to do a little tinker work on a couple of my guns so mind you I'm just standing at the workbench (with a big fan) and I can feel the sweat beading un and rolling down; too dam hot to enjoy myself.

Finished it fer ya ;)

chilly 59 this morning, almost broke out the gerbings, chose a fluffy liner instead.  Also closed the vents. 8)  If we see anything above 68 today it'll be a miracle.  By chance, have any of you tried the evapo vests?  They work as advertised, or better.  Have a cold glass of water or tea on me, I'll drink a hot coffee for you.  I can't wait till this winter when y'all start talking about winterizing yer bikes!

Here's to cooler weather for those of you who aint as fortunate as me,

Thanks, it went very well!  Looks like we will be moving in September.  The job will entail working alot of hours, but very rewarding.  And besides that, the "signifcant heat waves" will be few and far between!

Well done and congrats!

I'm about ready to buy one of those evap vests!

I did the wet t-shirt trick last drill and it felt great for about 30 mins, but after that it was dry again!  The evap vests would definitely work here in OK with 15% humidity.  But alas, I am moving to PA.........woo hoo! 8)

In the past few weeks I've been in the desert tundra, snow of the rockies, and yesterday a 807 mile ride to the heat heat and humidity of Key West, Fl. southern most point in USA and 100% humidity with no rain.

naw...   my bike and I can't handle the elements (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

It's karma, it's gotta be.  Conrad, I am sorry that I have been poking fun at your heat related plight, I vow ( for at least the rest of the day) to not make fun of the wonderfull weather you have been basting in.

Basting is right Chet and I'm well done. We had some storms move through last night, a weak cold front they called it. Highs today are only sposed to be 90 with a 50% chance of more storms. I'm riding today, I don't care.

Well, the karma was right, sunny and 67 for the ride home.  This morning I was looking for frost, it was 43 when I left the house, even turned on the grip heaters.
Sounds like the heat bubble is moving farther East, maybe it will put a fire under our elected officials in DC!!!

Yep, grip heaters on this morning for me too, 41 and sunny, supposed to be blue sky and 75 here today, very nice!

Yeah, I wish I had grip heaters on my bike today too- we apparently set a new record here at 103F (RI).

My wife and I were supposed to go to Cape Cod tomorrow but that is not happening- way too hot to ride for us as it is supposed to be 95F. Things look better for Sunday when the temps. are supposed to drop back into the 80's. It might rain but I would take 80's and rain over 95 and dry.... and sunny.

Brakes were good with new shoes. Acceleration was a bit off the mark though but didn't need much of that. The only real problem was the exhaust from the mule in front of me.    :o

True story. A friend of mine was raised in Kansas. When they were growing up, everyone in town had a mule, it was like a mule club. They would all get together and ride them. Not unlike us with our bikes.
In the dead of winter, he told me the mule would stay in the kitchen when the temps got real low.
This is me as he was telling me all about it.  :rotflmao: I swear, I could hardly breathe from laughter.
I called BS on it, and then he breaks out the photos!

Don't really know if they farkled them.

It was 113 in northern Oklahoma yesterday. At one point we had to stop at a rest area to let the dogs out. There was a nice wind blowing but it was like the hot air blast you feel when you're standing in front of a hot oven when you open the door.
