Title: New England
Post by: lather on April 24, 2012, 06:02:57 AM
Thursday the wife and I are heading out on a 5000 mile 15 day trip to New England (from Louisiana) For the first time in our 12 year riding career together she is doing a lot of the planning, it was her idea to do this trip although neither of us has been to New England.
We will make stops in AL, GA, WV, NY, VT, NH, ME, RI and NJ. Probably three more days from there but that is as far as I have planned. The 08 C14 has new tires and fresh fluids. Can't wait, Woo Hoo!

Sounds like a great trip. It also sounds like you are going to be pretty close to me on the way by- drop a dime when you are close and maybe we can have lunch or dinner together or something. I am sure I can break away from the KiPass Research and Perfection facility for a bit. I will send a PM with my phone number.

Although my wife says she does not love to eat, a tour of the Cabot cheese factory and eating Maine Lobster are high on her to do list!

That would be fun, I hope we can hook up.

Burlington VT is a great small city, as is Portland ME.   Both are places I love to visit, with good brewpubs.   Bennington VT has the Hennings Motor car museum and while I've not riden it, VT 100 is reported to be a great road to travel.

The state museum in Hartford CT has a large collection of Colt firearms, if your interested.   My wife isn't into firearms but found the display fascinating.

Newport RI has the mansions of the rich and famous that you can tour, along with the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

MA has Plymouth Plantations (south of Boston), Boston itself (too much to list besides Old Ironsides in Charlestown), Lexington and Concord.   The western part of the state is cool too.    I believe the Norman Rockwell museum is in Stockbridge MA.

Funny, I live in NH and am not sure what to recommend here, other than perhaps the cog railway on Mt Washington.    Not sure if it's operating right now.   The Kangamaugas Highway is a fun road, as are most of the back roads up here.   You can literally drive through all 6 New England states in a day if you want to push, but you wouldn't see much if you did.

Just some quick thoughts.

Thanks for the suggestions! We do plan a stop in Burlington and a tour of the Cabot cheese factory. Also plan to ride the Mt Washington Auto Road, weather permitting.

It might be too early to go up Mt. Washington. I went up the end of June one year and froze.

8 days on the road now and about 2400 miles. Here is our route on EveryTrail.com
http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1546998 (http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1546998)
Our 08 C14 has performed flawlessly through all kinds of weather and road conditions, except snow and ice. Average MPG has dropped to 38.7 from 41 prop. due to the windshield being up. Tires are holding up well, look about half done   and tommorow we head back south. Planning to go to Acadia NP today if it stops raining.

We moved to PA from OK last fall. We really love the northeast so far! Looks like a really nice ride. What's the coldest temps you've ridden through on this trip so far?

We had a short stretch of 42 F. Mostly 45 to 52 for the last 5 days.

If you need an assist or a place to clean up, do laundry, wrench on the bike or stay the night while in NJ let me know.  My wife and I did 3000 miles in two weeks (NJ to Nova Scotia) last year.

Not too bad, I'll take that over the 100's in OK last year! Stay safe and have fun!

With electric gear the cold has not been a problem. We are staying safe and  having huge fun. Had a great visit last night with BDF, Andrea and Kirby in Rhode Island. What a great trio!

Home after 16 days and 4696 miles!
Our track:

And a slideshow:

In the Green Mtns of Vermont it was too rainy to take pictures. I got some in the White Mtns of NH but they were mostly shrouded in clouds. The Mt. Washington road was closed, prob. due to weather and our planned side trip to Acadia NP was rained out as well. An excuse for a return trip later!

I'm sorry I have'nt looked at this section in a long time. I'm in south-east Ma, about halfway between boston and cape cod. If anyone is coming this way I'd love to meet up. I'd likely steer everyone clear of boston though, great place on foot or subway, sucks on the surface roads and no parking anywhere. Anyway, if anyone is near or traveling through, I'd be glad to have you stop by or meet for lunch, brunch, or dinner. I've never met another connie rider yet. (only owned mine for a year, so...)  If your intersted, just send me a PM, I check in a couple times a week.
Lather, sorry I missed out on this one. Next trip hit me up. Glad you enjoyed our little corner of the world.

We plan to get back up that way one day and I'd like to spend some time in above ground Boston rather than just riding through the underground! I had heard about the BIG DIG but had no idea the whole highway system was under ground. And I was not prepared for a non-functioning GPS!

Here's my writeup for the MSTA LA chapter newsletter which I finally finished. Writing is not my strong suit but this was def. a trip worth writing about.
And i,t was a real treat to meet Brian Andrea and Kirby!http://www.lamsta.com/newsletters/qtr2-12/secondquarter2012.htm (http://www.lamsta.com/newsletters/qtr2-12/secondquarter2012.htm)
