Title: What's on your TV these days?
Post by: Strawboss on June 22, 2022, 08:55:30 PM
We don't watch a lot of TV at all, mostly films and TV shows we get for free from the local library. A lot of Brit TV shows lately as they are so good compared to U.S. TV. We just finished "Madame Blanc". While trying to sell a cottage she owned in France with her recently killed husband, a British woman encounters mystery, murder, British expats and a new friend who drives a taxi. Light drama and some silliness.

We watch a lot of stuff on the TV via the Internet.  Network TV, not so much.  We do have Dish and once they go up on me again I'm dumping it.  My wife and I like to watch the network news from the DC area and that's the only reason it's still here.  We can get local CBS on Paramount+ via Amazon Prime but she likes NBC better.  Currently we're subscribed to Amazon Prime, Paramount+, Britbox, and Netflix.

I just started watching the old man series on Hulu. Great first couple of shows. Bridges and Lithgow are great and only get better with age.

Roku with Prime or Netflix - although Netflix movies are not comparable to Prime's selection. Since retirement the wife and I watch one movie a night and one series - Yellowstone, Goliath, now Billions.
We've subscribed to DirecTV since 1994 and have paid them an estimated $30,000 over the years. Between Roku and SlingTv I hope to drop DirecTV  before the next bill is due. I've come to strongly dislike DrecTV - especially since AT&T purchased it. Our DirecTV equipment is 2005 vintage - I was never able to get comfortable with entering into a contract which DirecTV requires for upgraded equipment so over the past few years the channels we are able to receive are fewer and fewer and crappier and crappier.

FTB, you are my hero! I'm getting to where you are, slowly. We don't have cable and we don't stream or dish or anything, rabbit ears is the way for us. During TV season, we watch only 2 shows a week and ONLY weather locally. DVD's from the library, and then only maybe 2 hrs a night, and then, usually during winter as warmer weather, we are outside.

Heartguy. An Aussie TV show about a surgeon that gets sent back to his home town after some shenanigans at a party to function for a year as a GP at the very small hospital as punishment and how he copes with his family, his past, and all the characters of the town. Some humor, some drama.

We don't stream or watch most network.  We have an antenna that picks up (depending on atmospheric conditions) Chattanooga and Knoxville.  I like the British shows and some of the content on PBS.  Love the old westerns like Have Gun Will Travel, Rawhide, The Cowboys with John Wayne was a good movie.  We did buy Yellowstone and after I got over the 1st scene in season one I really liked it.  It's just that we don't have cable, so a lot of the language and violence was not normal for us.

Well, we did live in Memphis for almost 25 years....   ;D

Oh, and can't watch news more than 1/2 hour or I have nightmares.

I've stopped watching the news.  Usually after 5 minutes I get angry and go over to Youtube and start watching it.   We have Dish, but as soon as they raise their rates I'm ditching it.  Watching more of Amazon Prime, Netflix, HBOMax and such.

It's amazing the difference in the coverage of QEII's death between the subdued Brits fleshing out the important aspects of her life and the Americans vapid thirst for dirt on the royal family. I like the part where the media tut tuts the paparazzi and what led to Diana's death when in fact they are part and parcel half responsible, the other half is the idiots that buy the papers and the pics that drive those idiots to what they do.

While I am happy to be an American (even with all of our problems) I am happy we are not ruled by a monarchy.  That said, I think she was a very dignified woman that took on an extremely difficult task at a tender age and performed with grace.

It says something that a very large portion of the population loved her and felt she was as steady as the North Star.

I do not believe Charles has the same devotion to the people but we will see.

I think the American press has lost it's mind regarding truth and useful reporting.  They are salacious and disrespectful.  But I'm not bitter....   ;D

You two hit it on the head.  I couldn't believe what I was hearing from the idiots at CNN and CNBC concerning her passing and on the Commonwealth itself.  So now I have three news organizations that I don't have on TV anymore.  The normal NBC news was very respectful from what I heard.

We have a fascination with the Royals here in the US. My Family loves them and knows a lot about them. I could care less. I never liked all that highness and peasant class crap. I like this queen because as Long as I have known of her, she stayed in her lane, was never in your face, and kept herself in the background as she should having no real power.

I haven’t been watching much news lately but I don’t think the news have been harsh on her. They are celebrating her life quite fondly, actually. where is all this queen bashing You see?

Btw, for some reason I just can’t quite put my finger on it, but lately have you noticed a sudden Love for Monarchy, you know all hail the king type of a thing. Damn, if I could just put my finger on why that might be. Ummmm. Thinking.... I Still can't see it.

Nope.  I admire the lady that served as Queen in her country, but I am not a fan of Monarchy.

I am in favor of our Constitutional Republic.

The monarchy in England is different in that it doesn't control the Commonwealth.  Parliament does.  The monarchy exists side by side but really has no power to speak of.  Boomer or someone else from there could explain it better.  When the monarchy had true power hundreds of years ago it could do bad things which is why we have our style of government.  They aren't threatening at all now.  I guess they are more like the rich Public Relations side of the government at this point.  I'm a Royalist, I liked the Queen.  She grew up through WW2 and beyond.  The jury is out on King Charles III and I'm in a wait and see attitude to see how he does.  At any rate, he's got about 20 years or so on the throne and then William takes over.  I probably will not live to see that sadly.

Each Commonwealth country has it's own government.
The UK parliament has zero control over any Commonwealth countries.
The Queen/King is head of state of 14 Commonwealth countries (not all) but has zero power in any except the UK.
The King/Queen has limited powers in the UK.

Only 14?!?!? I thought it was far more than that.

And what is the most consequential power she holds in UK? Can she mobilize your military at will without any obstruction? I hear Her Majesty's Royal Navy etc. in the movies. Don't know what that means or if it is just an archaic term.

It sounds to me as if the Monarchy has power in the form of influence and negotiations (especially outside the UK).  More of an ambassador than ruler, but working together with and for the people via Parliament   The final word coming from parliament?

Thank you for the insight Boomer.

So King Charles III would need the Prime Minister and parliament to mobilize the military I would think?

Correct me if I'm wrong Boomer, but King Charles III would not be mobilizing anything.  The government would if it came to anything like that.  I'm sure there would be some keeping in the loop kind of stuff, but he doesn't have any real power to do anything.  The government is in charge, not him, thankfully.  He's basically a figurehead.

You know, I'm really starting to get pissed off with all the criticism of the UK, the Commonwealth and the Queen from our news media.  Many of these criticisms are quite valid but at least wait until she's buried and the country is over the mourning phase (will never be over for me) before we start digging into the dirt.  We weren't digging into it before she passed on.  Just wait a fkn few days and get past the funeral.  And yes, I'm royally pissed. I hate the news media.

There are not many political figures that I admire, however, I appreciated the steadfastness that HM displayed during my lifetime.  I believe she did her best and stood by her convictions to serve. (Keep in mind that I am not of fan of Monarchy/Parlament vs. our Constitutional Republic)

No one will agree with everything one does over the years, but it is rare to see how she maintained the dignity of her office and the loyalty of a large percentage of the UK's population.

I don't believe there will be another like her and that is a shame.

We watched most of the first season of the original British TV show "All Creatures Great and Small" from 1978. Decent. Now, we changed a bit and are watching the first season of "High Chaparral" from 1967. Great 60's western escapism with wonderful old color and landscapes, filmed mostly outdoors at the Old Tucson movie studio.

Technically the military are under government control, but the Monarch is the titular head of all the armed services and most soldiers would side with the Monarchy if they had to choose between government and the Monarchy. Luckily it's never come to that.
The Monarch meets the Prime Minister once per week so they can heavily influence our governments policies.

Back to the main topic, the TV here is going down the pan
So many dumbed down programmes, so many opinion shows sold as fact, and now the BBC is under political control.
I mostly watch comedy shows and the few documentaries that don't treat me like an imbecile.
On the plus side I am back to reading more books. Currently re-reading Heinleins entire collection. 😁

We enjoy "All Creatures Great and Small" when we catch it.

Love, love love High Chaparral.  The entire thing was done mostly in AZ and everyone basically lived as ranch hands.  As someone that loves horses, it is great to see an entire cast that knows how to ride.  The chemistry between the actors is phenomenal.  Linda Crystal really didn't even have a command of the English language when she auditioned for the part.  The story of making it is as interesting as the series.

We watched it as kids, the guy who developed it also developed Bonanza, there are some similarities between the shows. We were in the area where it was filmed in 1994 and we were amazed at the desert and cactus, it was May and it was in bloom. As a music guy the theme song is wonderful, quintessential American western film music. It was written by David Rose who did many other TV show themes but most will remember him for doing a song called "The Stripper" from the mid-60's.

David Dortort.  He was very talented and had an amazing, productive career with Bonanza and High Chaparral.
He also produced The Cowboys in the '70's which is one of my favorite movies and ONE of the reasons I despise Bruce Dern.  As far as I can tell, he just plays himself in almost every production I have seen.
Arizona is amazingly beautiful, especially in the rainy season (just watch out for monsoons and dry river beds).

I agree that television is going down the pan.  I find myself watching productions that are least 3 decades old or older to find any thoughtful content.  Books are my other respite.  Once in awhile there are programs that offer comedic relief, but intelligent content has fallen by the wayside it seems.

Keep the faith!!  I am certain someone is capable and willing to take up the baton and allow meaningful content to be allowed again.   :)

We got up at 7AM EST to watch. The Brits got pageantry down. Very nice. I turned off the U.S. coverage and went to PBS which was basically the feed sent around the world but with MINIMAL talking. God almighty, we Americans simply cannot go 2 seconds without inane prattle about what we are watching, as if, somehow we need commentary, and, from the liberal morons we have here. Anybody see Harry and his wife not bowing? I know how it is to be in dress uniform for hours at a time, but to walk that distance, truly a mark of supreme loyalty to Queen, country and duty, did you catch the Grenadier Guards hitting the military posted along the road when neither would move? I'm no Monarchist, but I can't sit here and say no tears were shed this AM. Truly an era has past, never to be seen again.

"Crimson Fields" another Brit/PBS offering about WWI nurses at a field hospital in France in 1915. Depressing as hell but a historically interesting period, and as always, the Brits have the clothing/hair/uniforms down pat, lots of familiar faces in the cast too.

We don't go to the movies, meaning, I don't don't pay Hollyweird. So, every single thing I watch that isn't on free TV, which, BTW, is only 2 shows a week, we get free at the library, everything. I write down something I like, then either go to the library and request it and get on a list like we are for "Top Gun-Maverick" and "1883", or, from home I go to the county library site and request things. If I'm at the library itself, I walk through the selections of DVD's and most times stumble onto these titles. By doing this, almost always we are 2-3 years behind everyone that has watched these films or shows.....not a problem for us.

I am convinced that one of the reasons we were able to build and pay off our present home is because we have not paid for any type of cable or subscription television since the mid '90's.  Even when we stay at a hotel and we see what we are missing, we realize we aren't missing anything.   :)

Where do you guys find all these British shows? I watch a few of what I find on Netflix and Hulu.

As others have posted, PBS has a number of British shows.  Many are quite good.

Just started "1883". VERY confusing. Watching 2nd episode, better get better quick of we are ditching it. Who is who? No names and of those said no first names are given or spoken. We are scrolling through and pausing the credits and using conjecture to see or try to find out who is who.

Okay, the young boy is John Dutton (perhaps John's Grand-Dad considering the timeline 1883 vs. 2020's).
Margaret (Faith Hill) and I can't remember the Dad's name, James? (Tim McGraw) are young John's and Elsa's parents.

I agree that it is confusing if you are trying to link to Yellowstone.

We made it through all of the episodes and went back later and watched it a second time and it made more sense.

The story needs to stand on it's own.  It tells the story of John Dutton's ancestors crossing Tennessee,Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc. heading to Oregon with a wagon train of immigrants from Germany, Russia and Slavic areas.  They have never been free and are determined unto death to live free in this country.

It is hard to watch some of the pain and tragedy that is part of our country's history, but I think they did a good job.

My biggest criticism is Elsa's Tennessee accent.  How in the world did she not pick up on Faith and Tim's real life accents?   :D  Bill said it is because she is from Santa Monica....

On the plus side, that girl can sit a horse and reminds me a bit of me at that age as I also had no fear, loved horses and love adventure.

It broke my heart in several scenes, but the last episode does take you to where the Dutton Ranch began.

Bill says Closed Captioning / Subtitles helps....

The first episode is a bunch of patches that later become a quilt.   ;D

It's complicated....

New series of Top Gear started on Sunday on BBC1.
They travelled across Thailand in pickups and Chris Harris got to drive the Rimac Nevera nutter car.
2000bhp, $2,500,000 but 0-60 in 2 secs and eats other supercars for breakfast.
Now that Paddy has gotten over his idiotic laddish behaviour the current presenters seem to have settled into a fun to watch trio. Worth watching. :)

Yes, for a Yankee, I could tell right off the bat that her accent was not TN, but then my family is in AL and that's right next door. Many times I'm hitting the closed captions with dialogue issues or just poor sound too. And many times, I'm throwing the BS flag for situations and conversations that would not EVER have happened in 1883, but artistic license is sometimes needed to move the story along fill in blanks where a written story would have used 5 pages. Well acted but damn, what an amazingly depressing story. Pioneers were tough. No wonder none of them were ever smiling in the old photos you see.

True that.

I remember my grandfather telling me about moving and getting a job at US Steel in the 20's.  He had been a farmer in GA.

He said it was always too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry for the crops......

Dad never farmed but he worked at Fairfield works and the Sloss Furnace and used to empty his boots of all the sweat at the end of day.

Many in this generation have no idea......

Anyone that has not covered this country from East to West on a motorcycle (or even a car) cannot fathom what these souls went through to live in a free land.  When Bill and I used to travel from Cali to TN to visit family I wondered at what our ancestors did.

I remember the days before cellphones as well.   :) ;)

I remember phone booths and using an MCI card to connect to clients...

On my one trip out west back in 2010 I remember stopping at one of the 'trail' museums that documented the trip westward in Conestoga wagons.  The ruts created by those wagons still survive in some areas.

I remember those too LOL.  We used to joke that some towns only existed because that is where the wagon wheel broke.  I believe there is some truth to that though.

I also remember when the interstate system was not yet completed.

-There was a 20 mile stretch I think in TN where I-65 was not done where you rerouted onto 31W and drove past all the fireworks stores.
--65 as we know it now ended just north of Birmingham and was a 4-lane road with side streets and stores.
-When we went out west to CO on the bike in 2008, we followed the transcontinental railway, essentially Rt 30, towns still looked like the 30'-50's
-after watching 1883, I wonder when, in 300 years if they find all the graves of all who died on all the wagon trails, what they will think was the cause.

There's a new 'Beyond Paradise' with the original inspector on now on Amazon Prime.  It stars the original actor on the Paradise series.  He also starred in My Family which is now showing on Britbox.

I didn't remember him dying but he does refer to the Caribbean stint a few times...  I was referring to Kris Marshal.  I thought he had been in it for the first several seasons but as memory goes..I was wrong.  He was in series 3-6.

Wish I could play, but I can't. I don't have a Tee-Vee. My only reference is the OJ chase, and that happened in 1994 (I had to Google it), I dumped my Tee-Vee a handful of years before that.

I do have a desktop computer though (duh), and it's in my bedroom. Just shy of 70 years old, there's still only two things I do in my bedroom. Watching TV is NOT one of them ;)

1st season of "Hogan's Heroes". I need to chuckle of late. Many pan the show but in reality quite a few characters and writers were Jewish. The joke was the Germans. Kinda fun to see future characters in their first appearance on the show.

You are f*cking with me aren't you? You stopped watching TV in your mid 30s??

We don't watch much network tv these days.  Prefer to watch streaming channels although I just ditched two of them yesterday as I wasn't watching them anymore.  Both were channels off of Amazon Prime.  Still watching Prime, Paramount+, Britbox.  We also watch Netflix but even that has slowed down.  I do watch Max but that price is going up exponentially and will ditch that one as well in August.

Currently watching the Tour de France and the latest series of TaskMaster(UK).
About to watch the penultimate episode of The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime (Eurocrash).
Looks like one more after this (Western Africa) and that's it.
