Title: Seth Laam Custom Seat
Post by: 556ALPHA on August 13, 2012, 08:36:28 PM
I recently sold my other custom seat to a forum member in preparation for buying a Russell in the fall. (They are not inexpensive so I needed the money and the build date was a ways off)  The other seat worked well for me but I wanted a Russell.  I highly under estimated my wife's inability to ride on the stock seat after having a custom seat.  I heard about Seth and gave him a call, immediately I knew this would be a solution to my dilemma.  Within three weeks from our call I had a new custom seat and my wife is happy again.  We know what that means.  The seat is very nice and you will not find a better company with regards to customer service.  Communication was outstanding and he had my seat for less than 48 hours.  Below is his facebook and company page, I highly recommend his work.

That's a nice looking seat! So he reworked your stock seat right? What did that cost as pictured?

Looks awesome! It's got me thinking. My stock seat with spencer "supracore" mode I feel is too soft. Russel seat too high so I have been thinking about a Corbin. I have a Corbin on my DR650 and love it. Hard but molds to your shape seems to be best for long distance for me. How firm is this seat? Did it change the height?

Just had a nice conversation with Seth. I like what he had to say and he told me about an exchange program where he builds the seat on one of his C14 seat pans, ships it to me and I return my seat in the same box. No down time for the bike. So I pulled the trigger. Now all I have to do is wait.

I went with front only leather. $274 shipping included as a special this month. No extra charge for the exchange.

Agreed! $220 more to do the foam for the passenger pillion. I was tempted to get the whole thing but the only thing I ever put on the back is my Rapid Transit T-bag.

The exchange service is what eventually sold me. I don't do anything until they ship. Then I just put the old seat in the same box and packing and off it goes.

What about hardware?

Not sure what you mean. Seth told me he had about 10 C14 seats. He takes one, does his thing and sends it to me, I send back my seat and the deal is done. No extraneous hardware that I'm aware of.

Latches and brackets on the seat bottom. Not having to swap is cool. It is agood looking seat. We'll need a ride report and pics.

Your seat looks great. Mine should be there Friday and I can't wait to try it. Seth seems like a great person to deal with and so far excellent customer service.

Yup, I want some ride reports before I decide.  Yes, I know seat comfort is subjective, but I still want the reports ;D

Sorry guys, been out on the road on a mini vacation.  The sale for July got me the dual vinyl for just over 300 delivered.  I do not have many miles on it yet but it feels supportive yet comfortable.  It was a must for my wife and she is a happy camper again.  Now I have to decide whether to cancel the Russell, that is a lot of money I could use for other things if this does the trick.

Well Alpha... Are you still liking you seat. I was impressed with yours and Seth's responsiveness so I bit the bullet.

This should be at my door later this week.  :chugbeer:

I can't wait to put some miles on it.

That is a very nice looking seat, leather?  I am actually waiting for mine to come back, the passenger area is having a little mod done.  Very nice quality.

Thanks... The Sargent is the only aftermarket seat that I bought that was vinyl... That is one of the reasons that I'm not liking it. The feel of leather is well worth the extra effort to maintain it. I hop I can log a fair number of miles on it this weekend.

Got mine yesterday. Looks awesome. Wish I had it for our 800 mile ride last weekend. Can't wait to take it for a long ride.

Who's makes the back rest and rack? Does the helmet hook have a lock?

Rhino,

PCA makes that rack and backrest, it's available with or without a lockable helmet lock. The newer models seem to have a cool C14 cut into them. Mine didn't but it's not new.

Didn't think it was a PCA, but I guess its the newer version with the C14 cut into it. Looks nice.  I wish the helmet locks were alittle less visible. They look too out of place w/o helmets on them.

I got the back rest and rack from premier cycle accessories ( http://www.pca-one.com/ (http://www.pca-one.com/) ). I don't see that exact rack anymore. The hook is just a simple hook I made myself with no lock.

Granted I only put about a hundred miles on it (I just got mine back this afternoon), but I gotta admit that this seat is going to be a winner. It's far more comfortable than the stock seat, Corbin or the Sargent. The foam is just right... Not too soft and hard like the Corbin was. It provides good support so far. And my backside just likes the feel of leather... No... Not like that! It breaths and gives better than Vinyl.

Here's a few shots on the bike. I'm really digging the Bomber leather!

Someone mentioned that all you do is order the seat, give a down payment of 100. and then Seth sends the seat and you send the old seat back in the same box. But, I called Seth and I thought he said to send him the old seat first before he will start production. So I need some clarity on that, along with does the single seat change any ergonomics of handlebars and seat heights? I am thinking of ordering next couple of days if this seat doesn't make it necessary to farkle other things..Thanks for the great forum.

Connie14boy, you are correct. You do have to send your seat in first. I think he may have had some on hand at first. My total downtime was les than a week. Seth wants photos of the seat (side view and top) and a side view with you on it. You then explain what you don't like about the current seat and what you want it to do. If you provide a good description, then you'll get a build w/o an additional call to clarify. I must have done a good job of describing my issues because the seat is so much better than anything else I've tried. And my short ride was performed under what I call worst case conditions. I made sure I had all the gear on that helped create miserable rides. The seat's performance was stellar. What does **** me off is that I didn't do this sooner!

Just got the seat back from Seth Laam and did 350 miles on Sunday. I spent $365. for a custom stitched leather seat and all parts of me are still smiling. Seth has a real talent and his operation is the epitome of a great running small business. I can say that the bike is now perfect except for the bazooka exhaust.

The seat looks great. I had been bouncing back and forth between a seat from Rich's or from Laam and decided to send mine off to Seth last Friday. Seth received it Tuesday and called me yesterday telling me it was finished and he was shipping it off today. I should have it by Tuesday. I'm waiting for the photo he said he would send just before he ships the seat. He had told me initially that there was a three week wait and I was really suprised that he finished it so quickly.  I will post the photo as soon as I get it.

I wrote a short blog article on the evolution of My Connie's seat. It all started when I decided to modify it Myself. That worked out OK, but the decision to get Seth to build Me one was a good one.

My seat just got shipped back today.  I can't speak about after the sale, but up front customer service is definitely A+.  He called me several times to talk to me about what I wanted and then again once he received the seat to make sure I hadn't changed my mind about anything.  He received it on Monday and it's already been shipped back; I'll have it back by the end of the week...outstanding!  If the workmanship is half as good as his up front service, I expect to be very happy.

Well Seth shipped my seat yesterday and it should arrive on Thursday. It has been a real pleasure dealing with him on the phone and the price of the seat was very reasonable. The photo he sent of the completed seat looks great. With a nice weekend ahead, I should be able to loop up around Mt. Hood and get some miles on the saddle to test it out.
