Petcock Question
« on: March 09, 2014, 03:57:50 PM »
COG Nation,

I am wondering if it's time to replace my petcock?  I have notice a little drip of fluid at the end of the on/res/pri switch lately.  What advice does the COG nation have?  I have included a picture of the petcock.

Starting to get the 1986 ready for COG National in June!!

Thanks

Yep it's leaking. Replace or rebuild it. Maybe consider a manual option.

Chris,
I rebuilt my 87 a number of years ago and it's worked fine ever since.  I've only done one rebuild and have had the bike almost 25 years.

If I had to do it again, I'd think about the converting the stock petcock to a manual, but I'm not sure that would address your leak.

When mine was leaking, I seem to remember it coming out the weep hole on the back of the petcock but I could be wrong.

If you rebuild it, be advised that the aftermarket K&L brand kits have had problems in the past with undersized O-rings, etc.  Recommend use only genuine Kawasaki kits.  If you want to go manual, check out  http://www.pingelonline.com  for the best type of manual valve.  Don't faint when you see the price.

If you don't have any visible signs of pitting on the value or seat, I'd rebuild ($13) or I just found a new petcock assembly for $55 (http://www.metricpartsoutlet.com).  When the vacuum diaphragm started leaking on mine from the weep hole in the back, I did a rebuild with Kawa parts and went ahead and did the Bergmen conversion to a manual petcock.  This won't eliminate the possibility of it leaking from the diaphragm but I really like the idea of being able to completely shut the gas off.

Murph makes a manual conversion kit that does not use the diaphragm that is a nice job and reasonably priced, see here: http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=483

I made my own conversion years ago which has even less parts and does not use the diaphragm.

Look at this, it fits my '82KZ550A which has the same part # as my '01 concours, its the same part, matched it up and it looks like it will work, don't see why not.
