Title: Calling all Tank Bag owners, looking for advice and photos.
Post by: 556ALPHA on May 15, 2011, 07:22:10 PM
I am researching Tank Bags and have the list narrowed down to a handful.  This was on the other site just before it went down.
I have updated the list with suggestions from the group:

Cortech Mini
Cortech Super Mini
Chase Harper 650
RKA SuperSport
Givi T480 with Quick Mount
First Gear Silverstone II
Nelson-Rigg Silver Streak SSC-110
Luggage Locker-Tank Locker
Rapid Transit Recon 19
Bags Connection Trial-Ql

I have found a lot of info on most all of these bags with the exception of the Givi T480 with the Easy Lock ring.  Has anyone used this system and what are your thoughts?  Others feel free to post any photos of your tank bags.  Maybe this can turn into a good reference thread for tank bags.

The Chase Harper is a great bag. I tried a bunch on the C14 (at the dealer who had a great assortment). The Chase Harper fit the C14 the best and pretty much perfect. A good quality bag that I highly recommend for the C14!

My only concern with the Chase Harper is the map pocket.  It does not seem to be as stable or fixed as the others, any input on that?  tks

First Gear. I've got two: Silverstone for around town small stuff.

Laguna for trips, with a special GPS pocket that pops up.

It hooks on with four corner hooks, that are fairly hard to clip on/off. When installed, it isn't going anywhere. I leave it off unless I need it. I like the webbed, strapped top for holding or hooking things on quick. So unless I need to use the map pocket. It's normally in the side case with a map. Granted i use a GPS most of the time and a back up map.

Bought a Cortech Dryver that snaps on a gas cap ring.

I like it so far.

I use a Cortech mini magnetic and I love it. It doesn't move a bit and comes off instantly for refueling and I also like the map case. The map is right there for reference and stays dry.

Why use a small tank bag, when bigger bags don't get in the way? Unless it's the perfect day and you need very little, I can always think of things to put into my tank bag. I got a 19 litre bag (Motocentric Mototrek 19)and never looked back. It doesn't get in the way, it looks good, and if I need the room I have it. Happy riding gentlemen and Go Irish!

Because I find all tank bags are in the way to some extent. The bigger they are, the worse it is (for me). So I use different size tank bags. I use the smallest tank bags I can normally get away with. A smaller bag close to home. A larger bag when traveling. Although I did buy a very slightly used Bagsconnection tank bag with the SWmoto ring for my FJR. If I like it, I will have to resort to using just one bag!

Ditto. I don't want a big tank bag to deal with for just around town stuff.

Hey Cap'n Crunch, what is the material on the bottom of the CH650?
Is it soft and cuddly like a microfiber blanky or is it gritty like the side of your luggage?

Joe, how are the magnets?  Does it stay in place well?  Is the bottom soft preventing scratching? I have the Tech Spec pads and need a bag with higher up magnets like the Recon. Thanks!

I have a Cortech Super mini that I use for commuting every day and it works fine.  No problem with the magnets and the glove box and the bag does not get in the way. I've been using that bag for commuting for seven years and it's still in good shape. Rain cover works great, too.

I have one of Cycle Gear's house brand bags for trips.  It's a lot larger, but the quality isn't as nice.  I've only had it for a year, but it's worked OK. The rain cover doesn't fit very snug, though.

I've been using the Tank Locker from luggagelocker.com for almost 5 years and am quite happy with it.  So much so that I have 2 of them. :)

I also have a Cortech Mini/SuperMini (?) magnetic bag that has also been a quality product.

I'd buy either again if needed, but would get the Tank Locker first.

I have a Cortech mini as well the magnets do not hit well with the '08-'09 center glove box. To fix that I got a small bungie that I wrap around the handle and secure both ends to my Techmount. Without that line, the mini likes to fall off during wheelies. ;)

The magnets are great, even the rear magnet that rests on the Tech Spec tank protector holds on through the snakeskin pad.  I am very careful to keep the tank waxed and don't set the tank bag on the ground where it could pick up dirt or gravel.  I also check the bottom of the bag for any foreign objects before I put it on the tank.  It never has slipped even at speeds up to 80mph, also no problems in the twisties.

I just got one of these and I'm going to sell it and get the smaller version. I don't know what I was thinking. I don't like big tank bags. And this bag is too big for me. So if anyone is interested in a Bags Connection Trial QL. Give me a yell. I'll save you some money over buying new from Twisted Throttle. You will need the gas tank ring. I don't have the Kawasaki ring! It's pretty much brand new.

Well I decided on a Chase Harper 650.  I found a great deal on Ebay for 59.00 new with free shipping so I gave it a shot.  The map pocket attaches to the top when desired but I will probably just keep it inside and pull it out when I need to take a look on a break.  The storage is great and it is not too big.  Here are some photos:

Jumbo....with rain cover.....
Roadgear products are well thought out, and the owner is very in tune with customers and feedback.

this bag is a super nice one, had it on my old "Touch Of Gray" C10, and it adapts well to the C14.
the straps have "fastex" buckles, and are robust, I use one in the rear, and one each side up front, attaching the front straps to the bolts on the "snorkles" either side of the airbox, and the rear I slipped tie wraps over both prongs on the gastank-to-seat mount, and ran the strap in a triangle thru them and back up to the bag.
The bottom is nubbly-rubber coated, and has never stained or scratched my tank, no worries about magnetic erasures of anything I stick in the bag, it removes easily, and fits a side bag for lockup when so desired. It has an invisible expansion zone, that will allor another 4 inches or so, and you can fit a 12 pack of longnecks in it if you need to. The map pocket is removable, and has compartments below it, along with zippered side pockets(invisible) which house the rain cover, and stuff like your kickstand plate and little bungies...
I haven't found a bag that is more compact and utilitarian, GBYII gave me his old one which I ran for years, and finally popped the bucks for this one...it's 6 years old now, and I figure will work for another 5 years...

Ordered a MotoCentric 19 tank bag based on the few recommendations here and think it's about the perfect size.  Not to big or wide, yet not so small either.  Magnet's are even strong enough to hold fast through my Gripster pad on the rear of the tank which really surprised me given it's thickness.  Don't think anyone's posted pic's of this one yet so here's a couple for your viewing pleasure (just ignore my messy garage, I'm in the middle of a bathroom remodel).

I recently bought a Cortech magnetic to replace my smaller Honda bag. I used it on a 10 day trip a couple of weeks ago. This thing is perfect. Nice pockets, great quality, clear plastic on top so that you can view a map and never moves around once installed. It fits 2 pairs of size 10 shoes with a little bit of room left over. Plus other pouches for glasses, etc. Rain cover included.

I have the same pads. They are made by Techspec. Looks like he has the snake skin model. They offer a very good grip and some good protection. They are not really a foam but more of a hard rubber and they are adhesive backed but you can take them off and put them back on with no troubles as long as you keep the back side clean. Plus they come pre-cut for your bike.

Does anyone know of a tank bag that will fit well on the plastic portion of a 2012? I'm looking for something to hold my phone and wallet and don't want to take it off to re-fuel.....so the largest bag that won't hit the bars or interfere with the fuel cap.

Thanks.

This is an interesting bag and dirt cheap. You'll need to make some kind of strap mount. It should fit on the cover without interferance. Marsee makes good stuff.

Just came in the other day and it rocks so far. Cortech Super 2.0 18L Magnetic. Fits right over the useless glove box and sticks to the tank. Doesn't slide around and comes off easy when you need to fill up.

I know this thread hasn't been seen in about 7 years, but I'm leaning toward the Cortech Super 2.0 12-Liter bag.

I had one of those and really liked it but it faded pretty quickly to a purplish color .

I pulled the trigger on this Cortech. Didn't want a super-huge bag (like the $150 bag offered by Kawasaki); figured this one is just the right size, but it can expand if needed.

If it fades to a purplish color, that'll fit in sorta puke-like with the root beer color of the bike!

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!  I had to go back to see if I answered in it or not.  Guess not.   I used the Marsee expandable magnetic tank bag.  The one in the link is similar to what I had but not magnetic.

I don't know if they are still in business or what but I liked it and it worked well for the C14 on long trips.  Can't use it on the Indian as there are controls on the tank.

On longer road trips I have a Chase Harper tank bag mounted on my '08.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GRR4OC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

What I like about the '08 is the small tank compartment storing hand sanitizer and a microfiber towel. Then on longer trips I'll use the tank bag and carry snacks, camera, portable battery pack and more.

+1.   I found the 12l too small.  The 18l works well for me.

I'd be afraid the sanitizer would combust from the heat in the tank compartment.  :-\

Not much different than gasoline. If we can assume the main ingredient in hand sanitizer is isopropyl alcohol, it will self combust (auto ignition) at around 750F which is not much different than unleaded gas (petrol) in the tank.

The issues are multi faceted, the primary one should be a source of ignition, like a match or a spark. :)

I hate having something on the tank of any bike, so I mounted an older SW-Motech tank bag to the rear rack using their ION mount.  It has a twin on my other bike so for day rides on either bike I can pack a tire repair kit + tools.  The kit stays in that bag so when I ride my other bike I just grab it and go.  For multi-day trips on the GTR I carry a larger Eclipse bag that I modified by sandwiching a UHMW plate on the inside for a solid floor and the ION bag-side horseshoe.

I have a large Chase Harper for big trips. Occasionally I find that the ABS is turned off after I have had  the bars locked. No big deal as it is easy to push the button and turn it on after seeing the light not turn off. Just saying.

Personally I use a SW Motech for daily use. Tank ring attachment.

For Trips I have a Bagster that attaches to the Bagster Tank Cover.

You can't turn off ABS.  The K-ACT button selects the amount of linked braking and should be too high and recessed to accidentally press.  I think you mean KTRC, which turns off traction control.  That one is low and sticks out enough it might touch something.
