Opinion on long true ADV ride plan
« on: July 27, 2012, 09:58:56 PM »
So, here I am in Colorado Springs, CO.  Doing all the must do places, Pikes Peek, caves, cliff dwellings, big bridge at the gorge (complete with mega awesome catapult over the edge of the gorge).  We even stopped in at a small town with lots of small casinos, name slips me at the moment.  Earlier this week we did Yellowstone for 2 1/2 days.  Why the descriptions?  Well, I'd like to do a true border crossing ADV ride, a mini epic style starting with the WABDR going North to South, either discover a DS route through Idaho and MT, hit Yellowstone and do some dispersed camping, then head out through Wyoming to Colorado.  My plan will include as little paved road as possible, the trip will also be a minimum 1 1/2 weeks for the out ride.  We'd need seasoned riders looking to both sharpen their skills and do a trip of a lifetime.  I have no idea on what something like this would cost, but it wouldnt be on a budget for sure.  One of the things we would coordinate would be camping/lodging, as well as meals and a chase/support vehicle.
What I do know is my next trip this way will be on a DS, I shall never suffer roads these fine behind a glass windshield.
So, please, ideas, opinions, those seeking a chance to join the ride, a shrink to tell me I'm nuts, whatever YOU think may make this a ride of a lifetime for some adventurous riders.

PS, saw a blue 14 (24 Southbound I think, around 7PM Tueday eve.)with a set of them way large bathroom bars and rear hoops, no bags, small rear box, yes, a guy wearing a helmet for a change.  I also saw another blue 14 out by some prison, high vis gear.  Wish I could give better locations.  This freedom of choice thing is taken seriously 'round these parts, which I support BTW, but FWIW, the choice a majority of bikers (NOT riders IMO) have made is foolhardy.  I saw something coming down off the peak that left me speechless and yes, I took pics.  A guy on an older wing, full riding gear, from his shins up, yes, he had on sandals.........

Are you familiar with the “advrider” site?  I’ve read a few really good CDR reports over there.  Might find some good dirt-road info and/or GPS trax over there.

BTW, I’ve been on some of Montana’s really fine dirt roads myself, but mostly east of the divide and primarily back in the early 80’s.  One confession though, my vehicle of choice for those roads back then was a Toyota Landcruiser—FJ40.  Thing is, nowadays one might not be able to access some of those trails that were open “back in the day”.  Anyway, still have some vivid and happy memories of some near treacherous/ & hair-raising moments on some trails that were north of Ovando, MT in/near the Bob Marshall.

Just noticed, you’re in CO springs.  Thought I’d mention the Bookcliffs.  Even though they may not “line-up” with a CDR.  There used to be some really descent hard-pack dirt roads in the Bookcliffs not far from Rifle, CO.

Oh well, here’s wishing I could join up with ya’ll!
