I don't need no stinking windsheild!
« on: June 06, 2012, 01:31:02 PM »
This is the second time I've seen this recently.  About 6 weeks ago I was riding my
bike and couldn't get a picture.  This time I was in a car and couldn't resist slowing
down and shooting a couple of pictures.
This guy, and the other one, are on a 70 MPH freeway, following a truck doing about 65MPH with slightly
more than 1 bike length separating them.  The next off ramp was miles away.   The only thing
I can figure is that he's saving money on a windsheild....or maybe his bike wouldn't look
as cool.
Enjoy

Idiot.....I bitch at my wife if she even allows herself to follow one of those rolling billboards so close that she cannot she anything beyond . It drives my crazy and she just doesn't seem to get it even in serous traffic.
As for the bike r he's just trying lower wind resistance to counter the MPG loss due to excess weight the bike is loaded with :rotflmao: :rotflmao: or ....I know that company-that trailer is chock full of food!!

They probably don't want to have to shovel him into a bodybag.

Yeah, not from hitting the truck cause the truck stopped too fast, you'll always stop faster than a truck, unless you aren't paying attention, no, from something getting kicked up and hitting him and having him careen off the road, but not before getting hit by another vehicle or two.

Is that a 250 Shadow? With the rider's size, he probably needs a draft/tow to keep up with traffic.

hope his life insurance is payed up!  food for thought,,, most trucks today run recaps on trailers to save money.  being a driver I have seen first hand what a tire tread will do when it blows out and breaks loose.  it ain't pretty!

He's obviously never seen one of those things throw a tire tread.  It WILL take your head off, as proven on "Myth Busters".  Moron.

I'll admit to doing that back in my young and dumb days. When it was really cold out, you could get in close to the back of a truck and find a spot with completely neutral air that would let you warm up for a few miles. No way in hell would I do that now.

Not sure how people do this. Won't you get buffetted the heck out?

Nope.  Once you get close enough, the air smooths out, as there is a patch of barely moving air directly behind the truck.  Same draft effect that NASCAR drivers use.

A rider in the Twin Cities died last night after hitting a truck tire tread block.  He fell off the bike and was then hit by an SUV.  A couple of years ago I hit a chunk of tread with my 08 doing about 70 mph.  It launched me into the air and jolted my radar detector off its mount.  I managed to stay on the bike but immediately went to the shoulder to assess the damage.  It took out two of the lower cowling pieces and put a big dent into my oil filter.  I guess I was lucky as it could have been much worse.  I'm very good about looking far down the road for debris, but in this case I was moving from the left lane over two lanes to the right.  I went through a gap in a long line of cars, which hid the tire tread from view.  Of course it appeared just as I was moving across.    :(
