The Jeeps were both running Rotella, but I had to go to 20-50 castrol on Jeep #1 because of low oil pressure. I fear She is on Her last legs, and only has a couple hundred thousand miles left in Her.

Currently, 1990 Toyota 4x4 truck, 3.0 liter V-6, 360,000 miles on Castrol straight 30wt full-biologic oil.
Burns a quart every 1,000 miles.  So what?  It's barely broken in.

Currently, 2006 GMC Sierra 4x4 truck, 5.3 liter V-8, aluminum block, 110,000 miles on Castrol Syntec 5w-30 Synthetic.  Uses a quart about every 3,000 miles or so.

Previously, 1984 Ford T-Bird, 3.8 liter V-6,  went 254,000 miles on Pennzoil straight 30wt full-biologic, finally died due to electrical fire, engine was fine.

Previously, 1974 Ford T-Bird, 460 V-8, went over 200,000 miles on Pennzoil straight 30wt full-biologic, every 200 miles it took 25 gallons of fuel and a quart of oil, but man was it smoooooooth.

05 Acura MDX - Mobil 1 synthetic (can't remember if it is 0w-20 or 5w-20)

12 Acura TSX - My wife works for the Acura dealer so it gets serviced there and gets whatever they put in it.

We own the MDX so I make sure it gets the good stuff.  The TSX is a lease and my wife gets a new Acura every 3 years that her employer pays the monthly payments on so however they choose to service it is up to them.

Whatever the "deal" is with a better filter, assuming the oil is not Quaker State or Pennzoil. Change every 5,000 miles. V-10 uses 1 quart between changes and has since new. Da*n Ford...  206,000 miles.

2000 GMC Yukon 126,000 miles - Mobil 1 5-30 (only buy it with coupon at Costco). It was burning a quart, but not since I replaced the plugs and wires.

OIL THREAD!!
Has anyone personally seen a damaged engine due to the brand of oil being used?

Yes.  This occurred back when I was involved in aviation.  You'll be surprised at the brand and type of oil.

http://www.lieffcabraser.com/defective-products/case/98/mobil-aircraft-engine-oil

Also, there is a lot of info about various additives that used PTFE resins, etc., that resulted in lawsuits over engine damage.  Back when that stuff first started getting popular a lot of aircraft owners had problems that may (or may not, but sure looked like a connection) have been a result of it, enough that Teledyne Continental said they would void warranty on any of their engines that suffered early cylinder/ring problems due to its use.

I know, aviation references are off-topic, sorry about that.

That was with DEFECTIVE oil. And DuPont, the makers of Teflon say do not use it in an engine.
Now, have you seen an engine that has suffered damage from using the PROPER oil?

NO. And you likely never will. Proper engine operation is more important than oil brand.

Napa brand and other 10-40 dino oil, '85 slant six van 100k work miles, lots of idling and hauling. Pulled the valve cover recently and the valve train looks like new. Leaks more oil than it consumes.
Regular service regardless of oil type/brand is what's important.
I use a specific brand on my concours because it has better acid protection qualities than other brands. This is important because it sits unused for long periods of time.

What do you mean by 'proper'?  Proper to me is what the owner's manual say's to use as far as weight and type...

I don't know why you would even change the oil in that engine as it's constantly being changed automatically.  Filter yes, oil no.  ;)

My new Prius uses 0w-20 and they call for changing it out every 10k miles.  Dealer warned me not to use anything heavier than that.  I'll probably do that interval but I may also go for an oil sampling service just to see what's going on..

I know that some of you use these oil sampling services so can you give me some ideas on whom to use?
