removal of the star spring is difficult, to say the least. I've heard of some that break. is there any good reason to replace it? if it ain't broke, don't fix it???

star spring(s) are a 1 hour, 1 beer job.. less effort than brake bleeding...
If it ain't broke, no issue... when it or if (they)fail, replace with the Murph replacements, and the associated nut (which is used during the upgrade).

What year is your C10, later years saw a factory upgrade to a two? star spring setup.

this one is a 97.

this one is a 97.
THE "UPGRADE" was done in the 90's, and was changed to 2 springs, and a different nut.. and that nut must be used in the upgrade // replacement...
