Title: Smoke on startup?
Post by: stelt on March 30, 2013, 01:12:40 PM
Hi All,

My 2008 C14 emits a small puff of oil smoke if I rev it when cold only...when it warms up after 30 seconds or so nothing...just wondering if anyone else has seen this? It only happens if I snap open the throttle when bike is just started...ask my six year old how I figured that out..or she did...

Are you sure it is not unburned fuel "smoke", which is more likely?  What does it smell like?

Water vapor.....and NEVER snap open your throttle when first started and engine is warming up.

"Hey Doc, it hurts when I do this".

"Then don't do that!"

Sounds like worn valve seals, maybe? Definitely let the motor warm a bit before revving it.

+1

There is really no reason to open the throttle when it is not in gear, anyway.

Yup definately not unburned fuel smoke..thanks for the input guys..i normally let the bike warm up before revving it...it was a case of 6 year old wanting to sit on daddy's bike...me deciding to let her start it....and voila she turned the throttle grip when she turned the handle bars...instant puff o smoke...lesson learned...get her own bike....!

Water vapor.....and NEVER snap open your throttle when first started and engine is warming up.

I cringe when I hear folks do that.

While she's warming up you will get a lot of steam out of the muffler.
This is because the Catalyser hasn't got up to temperature yet.
Once up to temp the steam is hot enough that you can't see it.
Water is one of the main byproducts from burning gasoline.
With a Cat at operating temperature the exhaust is almost entirely N2, CO2, H2O and a little O2.
Before it gets hot enough the bike will also be putting out all kinds of Nitrates, Nitrics, CO, and unburnt hydrocarbon nasties.

That said my C10 "smokes" when warming up too, but that's normally because I only start it once or twice a month so it's probably condensation in the mufflers.

How did you determine that and what's to be done about it now?
