HIGH OCTANE OR REGULAR?
« on: November 01, 2012, 05:32:05 PM »
heh all:

as you can tell by my newbie profile, i have not owned my concours 1400 very long, but my question is- How many of you run regular fuel and how often? I picked the bike up in september, and up in western canada our hottest days are pretty much over by then, so i put about 2500k on my bike using regular gas with no problems, and the bike has more than enough power for me. I was planning on only using premium during the hotter days of summer, but would like to know what others do. They charge us an extra $.10 a liter for the high octane up here, and it just irritates me to think i pay extra for little if any reason. Also- will the engine diagnostics report a missfire to me?
curious- mat

What I found humorous was, you screamed the topic, but never capitalized on the post. :o

I run the expensive stuff. That's what it calls for. ;)

I use the mid grade( I'm an aggressive rider and I get 41-42mpg on avg.). I think a good question to go with this topic is, " What is the fuel economy with the fuel grade being used?"

Howdy,

Here in Huntsville, Alabama I use Premium 93 ethanol free, I get 45 to 46 per gallon, using ECO mode. I us actual miles on the odometer to figure my mileage. I don't trust the on board system.
It's a couple of cents more but I think I get better mileage.

Don't know if I would go with Regular but I have gone with Midgrade.  I ride mainly 25 highway miles one way to work at 80 mph. On the way home I ride with a coworker who has a Busa. Our ride home can get up to 120 mph on certain stretches of road. I can go thru a tank of gas pretty quick and with the price of premium gas here in So Cal going for $4.47, Midgrade is what I use.

But I'm still getting 38 miles per gallon with that type of riding

Fellow canuck here.  I really don't think it gets hot enough during our hottest of summers to even come close to the temps in the southern states.  I live at 2200 ft and use regular when I'm feeling frugal. Haven't noticed any difference in performance or milage.  When it does get hot out I'll use premium without a second thought.
Man do I love this bike! Red '09

Keep in mind the C14 doesn't have a knock sensor. Also, just because You don't hear any detonation, or pinging, doesn't mean it's not occurring. Detonation generally causes damage over time, but can cause a piston to get religion (holey) in a hurry in some instances. I run premium. Used C14 engines are available on Ebay sometimes, but I bet they suck to install.

I hear Kerosene mixed with finger nail polish remover gives better MPG's as long as you run synthetic and rub ye ole' fob while it is in your pocket.   ;D
Keeping the economy going, one tank of fuel and two tires at a time.
