Lane sharing
« on: December 10, 2011, 06:57:55 PM »

I managed to scrape up against a car today while lane sharing. Oops!! No damage to me, the bike, or the car. This is a very wide bike. Are there any slimmer side bags available?

The only thing I can think of for smaller bags would be to have a set of leather bags on it.

To answer your question about slimmer bags, yes. There are/were slimmer bags available at one time. One of the companies that does the LEO conversion for C14s used a slim line bag, I don't remember the details other than the bags being slimmer. All that info was on the old site but it still has to be out there someplace.

yes the bike is very wide .!
I lost a mirror when splitting between a couple of plastic traffic barrels at 50 mph . I just misjudged the width of the bike.
Its mega wide without bags on. Like Queen Mary wide !

I've only done the lane splitting thing once (out in cali for the MotoGP race at Laguna this year), and was following an R1200GS, so knew I had room. Otherwise, that's a spooky situation on such a wide bike. If I was on a 600 or something, that'd be cake.

The mirrors are wider than the bags, kind of like a cat's whiskers. That being said there were some slim replacement bag lids available on a Japanese web site.

Yer all pussies. I lanesplit for 40 miles every day for nearly 17 months.  ;D

Yes she's wide but well balanced and easy to manouever.
Easier to lanesplit than the C10 but leave the sidebags at home.
Fit a trunk if yer gonna lanesplit regularly.

My mirrors are a little scarred and scraped but never broke one.

I am definately more limited in lane splitting options than I have been on any other bike.  These mirrors are freakin wider than a Gold Wing's.

It's still doable though.

Never Lane Split in NJ or PA. It's against the law, and people around here aren't very good drivers, so I sit in traffic taking up my space. The Concours takes up the same space in stop and go traffic as a Toyota Yaris!  ;D

I've nicked a mirror or two, but if you're scraping the sides of cars, then you're a poor judge of width and you probably should stop lane sharing.

So can we assume that there are dozens of cars out there with mirror streaks down the sides ?

Wonder these people will do next time they have a Connie in their sights ?

Hope you don't live in my state ! :o

I believe that lane splitting is illegal in the vast majority of states.  I know I would never try it.  Riding is already dangerous enough as it is! :)

Keep in mind that Boomer lives in the UK where it is legal and normal to lane split and filter... IMHO it is completely different when the cagers expect the bikes to lane split and everyone, cagers and riders alike, are brought up with it from day one of driving/riding.

Sorry ,my bad- if I had checked his post I could have seen he was from the U.K.

Still , seems a good chance Boomer might get knocked on his bum by some pissed-off guy in a Vauxhall , or M.G. , or whatever they drive over in Merrie Olde England . Great fun ,what ?  ;)

Totally legal here if done below 30Mph.
All my scrapes come from drivers deliberately squeezing me.
All have had second thoughts when my size 15 bounced off their car.
I have never touched a car I was passing.
If the gap isn't big enough, I don't try to pass through it.
After a couple of weeks you KNOW when it's big enough or not.

Many drivers are not deliberately squeezing you. They see you in their door mirror and they steer a little bit towards you because of the tendancy to steer in the direction you are looking.

The only cars that have ever come after me were right lane hogs that I passed on the left.
We have a KEEP LEFT rule over here that all too many arseholes like to ignore.
So, if they won't pull over, I pass them on the left or "undertake" them.

One such came after me like I'd raped his daughter.
Unfortunately for him a bike is a lot faster than pretty much any car.
I found the next cluster of traffic and made sure that I had at least 10 cars between me and the arsehole.

Motorway riding over here would be no problem if it wasn't for the arseholes. Some of them are bikers who weave in and out of traffic at 70Mph+. Some are right lane hogs, some are the usual phone/lipstick/coffee idiots/
All are guilty of one failing.
They all fail to consider or care about the effects their actions have on others.
Arseholes!
