New Owner, and a Few Things I've Done To My Connie
« on: September 05, 2011, 12:28:23 PM »
Hello, last week I purchased a 2003 Connie with 9,200 miles and have been enjoying making it uniquely mine over the last several days. Over the last few years I've owned a Suzuki C90, a BMW R1150R, a Honda GL1800 and most recently a Valkyrie Tourer.  Each was a great bike but eventually I moved on.  I'm hoping the Connie stays around as we're off to a great start so far.  I do have the bags, but took them off for now.

First thing I did was to detail the bike, where I removed everything I could and with a lot of elbow grease got it looking like new again, inside and out.  Then I added a 24" Clearview windshield and a Corbin seat.  The pre-muffler area had some boot smudges I couldn't get off, so after painting them black again (and being dissatisifed with the appearance), I stripped and light sanded the paint off completely, giving them a nice polished look (see photo).  After my first long ride I found I didn't like the mirrors much, as they seemed too far away, plus visibility didn't seem that much better compared to bar mounted mirrors, so I removed and replaced them with a smaller pair I had left over from the Valkyrie.  Plus it really narrows the bike so I can squeeze it in close to the garage wall.  And they don't hit the windshield at full lock either.

Don't want to go on too long, here, but just thought I'd introduce myself.  I've already read many postings on windshields, seats, mirrors and other topics, and want to thank all of those who posted information that helped me to make choices or actually work on the vehicle myself (i.e. how to remove the mirrors).

Best regards,

Steve Nelson

Welcome Steve.  Nice muffler look - never seen that done!  Also, beautiful garage!

BTW, another member is trying to find a right mirror, if you want to part with it.

I'm guessin that is not the original tank.  No pinstripes, and no "Kawasaki" emblem.  Some have removed them (floss, then patience with goo remover or similar).   Keeps non-Concours types confused as to the brand!

Welcome Steve. I too come from the Valkyrie world. I had a 01 standard. Sold it after 7 years and bought my 06 connie. I will agree the mirrors do get some getting use to, however once you do they are just as good as the Valk's. I live in Fresno so if you are ever my way let me know.

Welcome. Do yourself a favor and do a coupla forum searches, one for "hydrolock", the other for "overflow tubes". Then get your Connie fixed up with some tubes iffn it doesn't already have 'em.

Good Luck.

The stock mirrors provide wind protection for the hands, good in cool weather.

Yep, Steve is my coworker. Great job.

The exact opposite of my farkles, Steve is a minimalist, taking off mirrors, paint, centerstand, air wings.
