Swingarm moving: have you had this problem?
« on: June 10, 2012, 06:30:30 AM »
So i finally have my rear suspension torn down, with interesting results.

On the dog bone,  two needle bearings frozen, although they were well lubed and no galling on the bolts.  So after decision I will go with the bushings fix, thanks to all who pioneered this fix.

After I remove the shock and dog bone, no side to side play with my hands, and smooth moving up and down, way past how much the swing arm normally moves. Looking good so far.

Now on to the actual swing arm bearings: I have been able to get at the throttle side ones, but the other side pivot will not move. I have only spent like 15 minutes on this side, still have a few ideas in my head on how to get it to come out. What I have done was the same on both sides, remove the three allen  bolts, put in a decent length M6 bolt, and pull. The clutch lever side now has had the put some vice grips on it, and some taping of the hammer on the vice grips in frustration.

No gonna be able to spend any time on it for a few days, so what have you done in a similar situation. Thinking about fabricating a puller.

Also thinking about leaving it alone, re assembling everything and worrying about it in the winter: it is not going anywhere, and I have drove it with little problems. I have a feeling when I get into it, I will need a new pivot and maybe a swingarm. The throttle side does have some galling on the pivot and the inside surface, but it does not seem to be affecting anything badly.

Your experiences?

The left swingarm pivot will tend to stick. With the 3 bolts removed use a drift on the edge of the triangular shape piece and tap it with a mallet once you rotate it a little in both directions it will usually pull out easily. Water seems to get into the space between the frame and the pivot the resulting surface rust on the frame tends to stick the pivot in place. I just greased the bearings and pivots on a friends bike yesterday and had the same problem.

Thanks guys. And George: I too am a previous Vision owner. My stator went out like 300 miles from home.

. . . I too am a previous Vision owner. My stator went out like 300 miles from home.
The furthest away mine died was Roanoke VA, about 500 miles from Ottawa. Ran without lights for a couple of days, always parking the thing on a hill to ease bump starting. I started carrying a spare stator, figured I could lean it against a tree and pop in a new one without even draining the oil. Helped me decide on Kawasaki for the next bike.
