A California man intends to launch himself 1,800 feet high on Saturday in a home-built rocket to prove that astronauts faked the shape of the Earth.
Mike Hughes, a 61-year-old limo driver, said his stunt will be the first phase of the flat-Earth space program, sponsored by Research Flat Earth, a group that believes Earth is, well, flat.
The rocket should travel about a mile at a speed of roughly 500 mph.
“If you’re not scared to death, you’re an idiot,” Hughes said. “It’s scary as hell, but none of us are getting out of this world alive. I like to do extraordinary things that no one else can do, and no one in the history of mankind has designed, built and launched himself in his own rocket.”
He claims to have built the steam-powered rocket out of scrap metal parts in his garage. The project cost around $20,000, including the purchase of a motor home off Craigslist that was converted into a ramp.
The daredevil’s aim is to get miles above Earth and snap a photo, proving that astronauts conspired to fabricate the shape of the planet.

“I don’t believe in science,” Hughes said. “I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction.”
"I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula."
- Mike Hughes, flat-Earth believer
During an interview with a flat-Earth group in June, Hughes said his project will “shut the doors on this ball Earth.” But he acknowledged that he had much to learn about rocket science.
“This whole tech thing, I'm really behind the eight ball," he said.
Hughes, however, is not an absolute amateur when it comes to rocket science. He built his first rocket in 2014 and flew a quarter-mile in Arizona, though the flight left him injured.
But the Saturday’s planned launch will pose a challenge to the daredevil. Not only was the 2014 flight a quarter of the distance he expects to fly this Saturday, the previous rocket was based on round-earth technology, the Washington Post reported.
The project received the backing of the flat-earth community in America after Hughes became a flat-Earth supporter.
"We were kind of looking for new sponsors for this. And I'm a believer in the flat Earth," Hughes told the host of a flat-earth web show, the Post reported. "I researched it for several months."
According to the host, Hughes was a real explorer of scientific secrets and “not compromised by the government.”
“John Glenn and Neil Armstrong are Freemasons," Hughes said. "Once you understand that, you understand the roots of the deception."
-
He doesn't believe in science though. :rotflmao:
Just wait till he's a 1,800 feet high in his home made rocket. He's going to have a crash course in the science of gravity. :o
-
You can’t fix stupid. But he is sure going to give it a heck of a try.
-
What a prat :rotflmao:
-
I think the key words here are:
.....the previous rocket was based on round-earth technology, the Washington Post reported.
The project [this more expensive one] received the backing of the flat-earth community in America after Hughes became a flat-Earth supporter.
Like some politicians will say anything to get elected, sometimes daredevils/researchers will say anything to get funded. (http://www.emoticonr.com/design/yahoo/liar-liar.gif)
1,800 feet, doesn't seem very high, I wonder why he isn't just using a Cessna?...Oh right, where's the fun in that.
-
I would be surprised if the local authorities, FAA, CIA, and FBI let him go through with it.
-
Publicity stunt.
He probably tried giving out a couple of up-skirt photos and when that did not go anywhere, this was his next best idea.
Brian
-
just hope his planned flight path isnt in the direction of North Korea ;)
-
If he survives this he's going to debunk the moon landing.
-
1,800 feet????? That's not even as high as a small hill here in Washington State. What does he hope to see from there? The top of some garage roofs? And what the heck is "round earth technology"?
Dufus.
-
You're being kind. He's an F'n idiot.
-
Instead of a steam powered rocket maybe the dork should build a large scale version of this model.

What's the worst thing that could happen with one of these? Maybe get his rocket stuck on the garage roof?
-
I do not know but it looks to me like some of those rounded pieces could end up someplace they do not belong. Just sayin'.

Wow, they still make those things! I had one of those when I was a child. (1950s) I recall mine was a two stage model made of white plastic with a transparent red tip (EZ boyz). I don't recall the two stage action working very well. Sometimes it fell to the ground and the hard impact would set the second stage off and it would spin around in the grass.
....ahhh yes those were the days my friends...polio; bomb shelters; footwear abuse at the UN; sputnik; cigarette smoke everywhere; separate water fountains; TV dinners; and...and...Cheez Whiz!
Just to get back on topic sorta, there where no pictures (fake or otherwise) from space showing a round earth. Only world globes made by those Replogle conspirators.

They must be using round earth technology.

Really? It's proven everyday.

Unfortunately, that is all too true. And I am not really sure it is pure stupidity or a combination of a lack of attention coupled with mental laziness. At any rate, it really can be amazing how foolish people can act. For most of my life, I attributed most bad behavior to malice but I finally realized that if just 'dumb' could result in the same behavior, it was much more probably that than malice.
But I still think this guy is just doing what he is doing for publicity, attention and very probably, in some way or another, money.

Well maybe not so fox like, couldn't find a place to pay for the pay per view and the launch is tomorrow?
I expect it to get canceled just like his jump over Palo Duro Canyon (http://www.newschannel10.com/story/31963919/mad-mike-hughes-palo-duro-canyon-jump-canceled) was in 2016.

Well, he had to cancel his launch. Seems he can't keep his motorhome running. Sort of calls into question his mechanical abilities, ya think?

A man who believes Earth is flat, and was ready to launch himself from a rocket in California on Saturday afternoon to prove it, has canceled his plans. At least for now.
Not having the required federal permits plus mechanical problems with his "motorhome/rocket launcher" forced self-taught rocket scientist "Mad" Mike Hughes to put his experiment on hold.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "told me they would not allow me to do the event ... at least not at that location," Hughes said in a YouTube announcement, amid international attention over his plans to launch into the 'atmosflat.'
"It's been very disappointing," he said.
How can he be a rocket scientist if he doesn't believe in science?

When our cats were young they would jump on the bathroom vanity counter ... and turn on the water :o
So I switched the faucet handles from:

to:

... and that leverage reduction worked! 8)
Wow ... cat thread ... well, that's about as good as a flat earth thread.

curious, wonder why you chaps haven't changed the spelling to "fawset" ;)
And anyways what's wrong with calling them taps :)

Careful now Mike, you live in a country where you have to mark the hot and cold taps (see how I got around the spelling of faucet?) so you know which one you are gonna' get. We in the colonies figured out that if we always put hot on the same side, we can easily grab the right side even in the dark. In fact, it has become of the three simple rules of plumbing in the US:
1) Hot on the left.
2) Cold on the right.
3) Sh!t don't go uphill.
And there you have it.
As far as faucet and taps, the faucet is most often the entire fixture, containing the taps, if the fixture has them. More often now though we use a 'stick' that regulates both the temp. and flow of the water.
Tomorrow's lesson: you use the Knife to push the food onto the Fork, and eat with that impliment, not the other way around. And the tines of the fork face UP, not down, so it acts as a natural carrier, with the bow downward in the center.
;) ;D ::)

This is what happens when I don't log in for almost a week over Thanksgiving, I miss a thread like this. I agree with Brian, nothing more than a publicity stunt. If he is smart enough to build/acquire the rocket, he certainly knows the earth is round. Besides, what would a ride to 1800' tell him that a 40,000' ride in an airliner wouldn't?
Wait... I'm actually trying to make this whole thing rational... wrong! Let's get back to beer taps and old school water/air pressure rockets!
-
My taps are all Hot on the left and cold to the right as well. In fact pretty much every tap I've used falls into that category IIRC :)
That includes the bathroom ones which are single lever (pronounced leeee ver) where you lift to control the flow, swing to the left to increase temp and to the right to decrease temp
Where I do believe there is a big difference is that you guys generally don't go in for this sort of setup where the taps are completely separate :)
That said most new builds these days have mixer taps of one description or another.

We have both types here as well. I have both types in my home. And what I meant is the taps themselves. I can't say that I've ever seen a set with separate faucets. All of ours have a single faucet with either integrated or separate handles.
-
OK, but not all that long ago (2001), I had a very good friend from England, and he often found domestic water controls on either side of the fixture in his travels.
Not sure what you mean by taps but if it is the complete water delivery device, flow control as well as outlet, then yep, we <almost> do not have them anymore. Often two controls but only one outlet for the water. I have used separated delivery faucets and they are really pretty inhospitable: one side is ice cold and the other side will scorch you..... washing ones' hands becomes an adventure. ::)

Yeah, that is one method. The faster way is to just work with the running water and move on..... :-)
And our 'plug and plughole' (Hey, a big Easy Boys on that one!) are incorporated in our sinks and bathtubs so..... we just push / pull (Boys!) the drain lever if / when we want to fill the sink.
But to be honest, I have not filled a bathroom sink in.... ever that I can remember. The only thing I need standing water in the bathroom for is shaving, and I have a scuttle for that (state of the art, 1700's :rotflmao: ). Except for those time I fill the scuttle and put it in the microwave to heat it, the very root definition of an anachronism I think....
Brian
P.S. This thread is de- railing from a thread about something stupid to a thread about nothing. Not sure if that is better, worse or just a lateral move. :-)

[Serious mode ON]
People believe in all sorts of things that make no sense, are not supported by any evidence, in fact are discredited by ALL known evidence and so on. There seem to be several reasons for this, one being emotions of course but some other favorites include mental laziness (easier to just grab onto something, anything than invest the time to think about it), group mentality (YEAH, what he said!), pack mentality (if you ain't a-wid me, you must be agin' me), the infamous, and almost impossible to combat 'that is how he / she was raised' and several more. In fact, it seems that by far the greatest amounts of opinions, beliefs, likes / dislikes and so forth are NOT the product of logical thought and development but some other, 'it really does not make any sense' philosophy.
Just as a simple example: (and I am not going to discuss and especially not argue about this BTW), let us consider the general situation of Global Warming. Now most people have a very firm opinion on this, generally hard to one side (it does not exist) or the other side (it is destroying our planet). Fine and well. But how did they reach that conclusion? Well, it seems to be dependent, and exclusively dependent, on which political party they follow. Come again? Yep, it seems most people have joined their 'herd' and simply bellow their agreement with one of the two major political parties in the US. No logic, thought or consideration needed, and worse yet, wanted. So any 'discussion' of this matter is not discussion at all but belligerent support of that person's party, coupled with belittlement of the other persons' party. Simply amazing.
So, some people believe that the Earth is flat? Not really that surprising. In fact, almost surprising that a political party has not embraced this idea with the result being 30% to 40% of the population then believes the Earth is flat, due strictly to political affiliation..... all the while believing it is their own idea, of course.
The scary part of all of this is not that there was a significant portion of the planet under Nazi control at one time as a result of these flaws but that there have been many instances of this kind of social control over the millennia and continents.
So by all means, do re- think your stance on..... people. Just be prepared to shake with terror.
[serious mode OFF]
"Well, I don't care if it rains or freezes,
Long as I have my plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car

My taps are all Hot on the left and cold to the right as well. In fact pretty much every tap I've used falls into that category IIRC :)
Standards are wonderful- when they are followed (or not conflicting ones). Here is another: light switch- up is on, down is off. Right is on, left is off. Or rotary power, volume, burners, valves, locks, whatever- clockwise is usually on/open/louder/more/locked, counterclockwise (or for you, "anticlockwise") is off/close/softer/less/unlocked. Or sticky push buttons- "in" is on, "out" is off.
That includes the bathroom ones which are single lever (pronounced leeee ver)
Not here- it is "LEH ver" :) Like most single "e" words: "let" and "leper" and "leather." The long "e" is when there are two e's, like "leep" and "keep" and "seep" and such.
Where I do believe there is a big difference is that you guys generally don't go in for this sort of setup where the taps are completely separate :)
No. Here, too, when there are two single-temp faucets, the hot is ALWAYS on the left. Although it is exceeding rare to see two totally separate taps/water streams- it is inconvenient and pretty much obsolete.
The less frequent conundrum is when there is a single lever and it moves FRONT TO BACK.... it seems the standard would be cold forward and hot backwards (away). But those are pretty rare.
Sorry to jump back to the previous "sub topic" :) It was more interesting than the crazy notion of a "flat earth."

Geez Max, that post could use a couple of Easy Boys!, at least one Whoa Nelly! and a WTF (you seem unusually interested in levers and things that rotate, not that there is anything wrong with that :rotflmao: ).

Shouldn't all the taps be cold? At least in the US. We like our beer cold.

Excepwhere you have 2 way switching for a light where one Switch is up and the other down although you could put the down one up to turn on the light so they are both up.
equally both could be up at the same time

Eg (from an imaginary news story)
The leaper was identified as a leper
WTF is a "leep" when it's at home anyways?

Shouldn't all the taps be cold? At least in the US. We like our beer cold.

most premium lagers are served between 42 and 48 degrees Fahrenheit (6 to 9 degrees Celsius) and quality ales between 44 and 52 degrees Fahrenheit (7 to 11 degrees Celsius). Serve authentic Stouts as warm as 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius), which is British cellar temperature.

And let's not talk about which side of the car the steering wheel is supposed to go on, is it the on side or the off side? And which is which when what you're talking about is the other side of the road? My Sunbeam Alpine had the steering wheel on the British off side, which is the American on side, which is the other side of the road in the other country.
Isn't "anti-clockwise" actually widdershins?
And what is anti-clockwise on a digital clock?

To get this back on track, if the earth is flat where does the crap go when you flush the toilet?
To Washington.

To Washington.
:rotflmao: :goodpost:

To Washington.
Truth right there!
-
To Washington.
Now wait just a minute, here! I live close to Washington and somewhat downhill of aforesaid (word of the day) mentioned location. If that place fills up it's headed my way! An alternate location needs to be found.

To Washington.
I thought most of our crap came FROM Washington (and I don't mean "the other" Washington where I live.

OK, so I looked at that video and found that it had been produced by my grandfather, whom I killed when I time-traveled way back before he fathered my father, and before Video was invented, which is NOT a true statement here on OUR Earth, but IS true on the OTHER Earth, where true statements don't "hold water" (their water, not OUR water). My twin brother visited the OTHER Earth a few years ago, and when he got back he was nine years younger than me, and had gotten himself a pet raven (which is NOT black), and his digital watch was running backwards.
I have to go now, because one of our cats is scratching at the bedroom door, but I dare not open the door because according to Dr. Schrodinger, it might be alive or dead, but opening the door might kill it (if it isn’t already dead).
-
Good post.
But are you sure your brother was nine years younger than you, or were you nine years older than he? These relativity issues can be tricky, why this one time (not sure of the exact time), I had a relative that was a real putz, and I worked for years on a way to make him 100 years older than me......

Yep....looks round and flat. Like a lumpy pancake.

good god this argument will never be over :D there will always be people who choose to believe what they want

Lets be clear, this guy does NOT believe the earth is flat. This is a publicity stunt. Nothing else.

Next he'll be saying that pancakes are spherical.

Ha...ball shaped pancakes....never happen.

I wouldn't really worry too much about it. In the age of Fake News, reality is whatever is convenient (i.e., can I turn a profit on it?).

The Earth is still round though, surprise!

Yeah, and now he changed his beliefs...
“Do I believe the Earth is shaped like a Frisbee? I believe it is,” he said on social media."
-
Is a frisbee not flatish?
-
There are millions of nut jobs like this seeking publicity. Why is this guy getting press time?

It breaks up the time between Brittany's news- worthy life events and what the entertainer de jour does not want us to eat this week.....

Yeah! It's not like he's a rocket scientist or something is he? Oh wait... ;)

A little thought will reveal the answer to what happens. Since the earth is not flat but frisbee like, when you get to the start of the rounded part, it begins to rotate under you at the exact rate that will make you think that you are still on flat ground and since the universe is infinite you will continue walking this rounded section while continuing to believe that you are still on a flat earth, which will reinforce your sense of a flat earth as the whole time the disc continues to rotate at the exact rate that reinforces your sense of a flat (or more correctly, a disc shaped) earth and at some point on your travels of the rounded edge the flat earth will begin to rotate at a 90 degree so that you now walk not only over the arc but not also at an angle perpendicular to the edge curve of the disc, thus creating a retrograde movement to further reinforce your belief of a flat earth, which is based in no small part by the experiments of the brave investigator who managed to fly almost 2,000' in the air in an outstanding effort to disprove the entire body of science that has evolved over the last 2,000 years, during which time no one has managed to successfully fall of the edge.

Just for fun reading (in the bathroom with a tablet?): https://theflatearthsociety.org/tiki/tiki-index.php (https://theflatearthsociety.org/tiki/tiki-index.php)
just some of the gems found there. ;D
The Sun
The sun is a sphere. It has a diameter of 32 miles and is located approximately 3000 miles above the surface of the earth.
------------------------
A Lunar Eclipse occurs about twice a year when a satellite of the sun passes between the sun and moon.
This satellite is called the Shadow Object.
------------------------
The Planets
Rotoundity
Q. If the planets are round, why isn't the earth?
A. The earth is not a planet.
Size and Magnitude
Q. How big are the planets in the FE model?
A. Pretty small.
Solar System
Q. What does the Solar System look like in FET?
A. In FET the planets are revolving around the sun, while the sun itself revolves around the Northern Hub.
eeeeewwww .... :o the boogie man "Shadow Object" is going to get you us all. ::) ;D

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
The Shadow Object do!
