Valve Adjustment
« on: July 03, 2013, 08:35:48 PM »
Need tips on doing the valves. I have followed what I read but when you set them with the feelers what level of tension should you feel? Little or like you are doing spark plugs. I set my with some tension on the feelers and it seems to run ok but the exhaust seems, well, just not the right sound.

Slight drag on the feeler gage.  Error toward the loose side of spec is what I've read.  Lots of folks suggest using two feeler gages at a time, one on each of the two tappets controlled by the same rocker arm in case there is a teeny bit of wobble in the rocker.  I use two because of that and peace of mind.

I do mine by using a go/no-go method.  If the correct size fits and the next size up doesn't, I'm good.

A trick that works for me is to use one feeler gauge that spans under both the adjusters.

Its easier for me that way than having to manage 2 feeler gauges along with a couple tools to loosen and tighten the lock nuts, especially on the more hard to reach areas toward the middle of the engine.
