but could NOT change the floorplan from the stairs to the south end of the house. So all the extra room went into the MBedroom and associated rooms but the two 'spare' bedrooms in front are relatively small at just under 12' X 12' each.
I have a similar situation in my house, a 50's ranch. There is a 25% extension that goes across the back of the house, so it gained more area in the great room (since the kitchen moved back) a quasi dining room (eat-in kitchen), a large kitchen, doubled the master bathroom, and the master bedroom also doubled in size plus gained a walk-in closet.
But the front two bedrooms are still their original, tiny, 1950's size. But it works out OK (I live alone), since one is just a storage/tool/electronics repair room; and the other is the spare bedroom/exercise/sewing room (twin bed, desk). Ha- exercise, yeah, right. There is a treadmill and some free weights. I do look at them occasionally...
What I really wish was that I had a three car garage instead of a one car garage. But extending any part of the house is impossible on the lot. It is what it is! After 25 years, I guess I am used to it. I put a hell of a lot of work into this place and learned just about every trade doing it (framing, drywall, painting, electrical, plumping, HVAC, tilework, floor repair, cabinetry, finish carpentry, blah). Now am I permanently worn out. Nice to see you still have energy to be productive
